CA Foundation guidance: how the paper is cracked, from your own numbers
Chartered Accountancy Foundation Course — the entry-level examination of the CA qualification. Conducted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), a statutory body under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949. Suresh knows this paper from the site's own pattern pages — and reads your scores, your mocks and what you haven't touched before saying a word.

How it's decided
CA Foundation, stage by stage
Three times a year — January, May and September sittings. Pen-and-paper at ICAI centres. Papers 1 and 2 are subjective (3 hours each); Papers 3 and 4 are objective, 100 MCQs each (2 hours each).
CA Foundation — four papersThe entry-level examination
400 marks across four papers. Papers 1 and 2 (Accounting, Business Laws) are subjective and run three hours each. 25 deducted for a wrong answer. You must score 40 in each paper and 200 overall.
CA Intermediate — two groups of three papersThe professional stage
Six papers of 100 marks, taken as two groups that may be attempted together or separately. Each paper is 70% descriptive and 30% case-scenario MCQ. Clearing at least Group I is what unlocks articleship.
Articleship — two years of practical trainingSupervised practice under a practising Chartered Accountant
Begun after clearing Group I of Intermediate and completing the required training courses. The New Scheme reduced articleship from three years to two, and added four Self-Paced Online Modules (SET A, B, C and D) that must be completed before the Final examination.
CA Final — two groups of three papersThe qualifying examination
Six papers including Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management, Advanced Auditing, the two tax papers, and Integrated Business Solutions — a multidisciplinary open-book case study. Passing, plus completed training, admits you to membership of ICAI.

What you sit, and how it is marked
CA Foundation — Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics
400 marks3 hours each for Papers 1 and 2Negative marking
Entry-level examination; clearing it admits you to CA Intermediate
Marking: 0.25 deducted per wrong answer in Papers 3 and 4 only. Papers 1 and 2 are subjective and carry no negative marking. Unattempted questions are never penalised.
Papers 1–2 subjective; Papers 3–4 carry 100 MCQs each
Paper 1 — Accounting100 marks · 180 minPaper 2 — Business Laws100 marks · 180 minPaper 3 — Quantitative Aptitude100 marks · 120 minPaper 4 — Business Economics100 marks · 120 min
Every paper is worth exactly 100 marks, so weight cannot be used to prioritise between them. Prioritise instead by how the marks are earned: Papers 1 and 2 reward format, working notes and cited provisions, which are trainable and reliable; Papers 3 and 4 reward accuracy under a guessing penalty.
Where the marks come from
Where CA Foundation's 400 marks come from
Four papers of exactly 100 marks each, so no paper outranks another on weight — but they are not examined alike. Papers 1 and 2 are subjective, written in three hours and marked step by step against ICAI's suggested answers. 25 for a wrong answer. That split is the single most important planning fact at this level: half your marks reward presentation and reasoning you can show, and half reward accuracy under a penalty for guessing.
Accounting100 marks · 25%
The paper that decides most Foundation results, because it is the one where a half-understood method still shows partial working and still earns marks. Company accounts and partnership accounts are the heaviest single blocks, and the format itself is marked.
Business Laws100 marks · 25%
The Indian Contract Act alone spans nine units and is the largest chapter in the paper. Answers are marked as provision, application and conclusion, so a correct outcome reached without citing the provision loses most of its marks.
Quantitative Aptitude100 marks · 25%
Three separately weighted parts — Business Mathematics 40, Logical Reasoning 20 and Statistics 40. Logical Reasoning is the cheapest 20 marks in the entire Foundation and needs no formula sheet at all.
Business Economics100 marks · 25%
Now a full 100-mark paper carrying macroeconomics, public finance, money and international trade alongside the classical micro chapters. Diagram-driven reasoning converts directly into MCQ accuracy here.
What changed this cycle
Things last year's advice gets wrong
The New Scheme of Education and Training took effect from the May/June 2024 sitting. At Foundation it removed two papers outright — Business Correspondence and Reporting, and Business and Commercial Knowledge — leaving four: Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude, and Business Economics.
Business Economics is now a full 100-mark paper in its own right, and it gained substantial macroeconomic content that the old 60-mark version never carried: national income determination, public finance, the money market and monetary policy, international trade, and the Indian economy.
25 for every wrong answer, and unattempted questions carry no penalty at all. 0625. 167. The rule for these two papers is to leave nothing blank.
Foundation and Intermediate now run three times a year (January, May and September) rather than twice, which shortens the cost of a failed attempt considerably. CA Final continues on the May and November cycle.
The chapters that carry the marks
Where a plan for CA Foundation usually starts
The highest-weight chapters in each subject, linked to their notes. Weights are estimates from previous papers where the conducting body publishes none. Your guide weighs these against your own scores.
The ICAI, ICMAI and ICSI papers: presentation marks, revision cycles and the exemption maths. Pick one to start, or just talk — Suresh has read your profile either way.
