Where to start
There are three good entry points depending on what you already know:
- You know the subject and city: Go to /find-tutor and fill in Subject + City to get an instant filtered list.
- You want to browse your city: Go to
/tutors/{city}— e.g., /tutors/hyderabad — to see all verified tutors in that city. - You're looking for a coaching centre: Go to /coaching-centers and filter by city and subject. Coaching centres typically offer structured batch programmes rather than one-on-one tuition.
Using search filters
The Find a tutor page has six filters. Use as many as you need — more filters mean fewer but more relevant results.
Subject
Type the subject name. You can be broad ("Mathematics") or specific ("JEE Advanced Mathematics", "IELTS Writing"). The search matches partial input and suggests popular subjects as you type.
- For competitive exam prep: include the exam name — "JEE Physics", "NEET Biology", "UPSC History".
- For language learning: include the language and goal — "Spoken English", "French A1", "Hindi Grammar".
- For board exam help: include the board — "CBSE Class 10 Maths", "ICSE Chemistry".
Grade / Level
Select the relevant academic level. Options include:
- Class 1 through Class 12 (school level)
- Foundation (Class 6-10 competitive exam prep)
- Dropper (repeat-year JEE/NEET students)
- Undergraduate / Postgraduate
- Professional (CA, CS, CMA, etc.)
City
Required for home tuition. For online-only teaching, leave blank — online tutors from any city will appear. Typing a city name shows verified tutors based there.
Teaching mode
- Online — live video classes from any location.
- Home tuition — tutor travels to the student's home.
- At tutor's place — student goes to the tutor's location.
Select "Online" if you're not in the same city as the tutor, or if you prefer the convenience of learning from home.
Language
The medium of instruction. If you're more comfortable in Telugu, Hindi, or Tamil, set this filter to find tutors who teach in your language. This makes a significant difference for conceptual subjects like Physics and Chemistry.
Demo available
Toggle this on to show only tutors who offer a free trial class. Strongly recommended for first-time users — a demo class lets you assess teaching style and subject depth before paying.
Reading a tutor profile
Click any tutor card to open their full profile. Here's what to look at:
- Headline — one-line summary of their speciality and experience. e.g., "IIT Bombay graduate — JEE Physics tutor with 7 years' experience." A specific headline signals a focused, experienced tutor.
- Bio — their teaching philosophy, background, and what to expect. Read the full bio — it reveals personality and teaching style.
- Qualifications — educational background and certifications. An M.Sc in Mathematics from a reputed university matters for advanced subjects.
- Experience — years of teaching. Tutors with 3+ years have a Verified badge and rank higher.
- Subjects & grades taught — confirm your subject and grade are listed.
- Star rating & reviews — read 3–5 recent reviews. Look for patterns: multiple students mentioning "clear explanations" or "patient with doubts" is more reliable than a single 5-star with no comment.
- Hourly rate — the one-on-one rate. Course/batch prices (for group live classes) are shown separately on each course page.
- Teaching mode — confirm they offer the mode you need (online / home tuition).
- Courses — scroll to see their published online courses. A tutor with an active course has structured curriculum and a proven track record.
Comparing tutors
Shortlist 3–4 tutors before deciding. Use these criteria to compare:
- Subject depth: Does their bio and qualifications match the exact level you need? A B.Sc tutor is fine for Class 10 but may not be strong enough for IIT-JEE Advanced.
- Review patterns: Same subject, same grade as you? Reviews from "helped my child pass Class 12 boards" are more relevant than generic praise.
- Availability: Check their available days and slots against your schedule. No point enrolling with a tutor whose only free slot clashes with your school hours.
- Pricing: Hourly rate doesn't always reflect quality. A ₹500/hr tutor with 20 reviews may outperform a ₹1,500/hr tutor with 2 reviews. Use the demo to judge value.
- Communication style: WhatsApp a question before booking if unsure. A prompt, detailed response is a good proxy for how engaged they'll be as a teacher.
Book a free demo class
A demo class is a free trial session — typically 45–60 minutes — where you can experience the tutor's teaching style before committing.
- On the tutor's profile, look for the Demo available badge and a Book free demo button.
- Select an available day and time slot. Slots shown are the tutor's confirmed availability.
- Confirm your booking — you'll receive a calendar invite and class reminder.
- Join at the scheduled time from your My classes page.
- After the demo: if you'd like to enroll, go to the tutor's course page and choose a paid batch.
What to assess during the demo:
- Does the explanation make sense to you? Does it match your learning style?
- Is the pace too fast, too slow, or just right?
- How does the tutor respond to a question you ask?
- Is the audio/video clear? (Technical issues should be rare — but worth noting.)
- Do you feel comfortable asking doubts?
Browse by city
If you're looking for home tuition or a local tutor, each major city has a dedicated listing page:
City pages show all verified tutors based in that city, sorted by rating and profile completeness. You can further filter by subject and grade directly on these pages.
For smaller cities not listed above, use the Find a tutor page and type your city in the filter — tutors from smaller cities are in the system even if they don't have a dedicated city page.
Coaching centres & schools
If you're looking for a structured batch programme rather than one-on-one tuition, coaching centres on Tuition.in offer:
- Structured curriculum with a fixed schedule of live classes
- Multiple faculty members teaching different subjects
- Batch sizes of 15–50 students (more like a classroom setting)
- Regular assignments, tests, and progress tracking
- Often more affordable per-subject than private one-on-one tuition
Browse coaching centres at /coaching-centers or go directly to a city — e.g., /coaching-centers/hyderabad.
Tips for parents
- Involve your child in choosing. A tutor the student likes is far more effective than one the parent chose alone. Let them attend the demo and voice an opinion.
- Check for subject-specific experience. A maths tutor who primarily teaches Class 8–10 may not be the best fit for Class 11 JEE preparation — different depth of expertise.
- Look for communication frequency. Tutors who post weekly assignments and respond to batch chats are measurably more engaged. This is visible in their review comments.
- Start with a short commitment. Enroll in a single-month batch or a demo series before committing to a full-year programme.
- Set goals before the first class. Share specific targets with the tutor — "we need to improve Chemistry from 55% to 70% for the boards in March." A good tutor will tailor the plan accordingly.
FAQ
How many tutors can I demo before choosing one?
There's no limit. Each demo costs nothing. Demo 3–5 tutors for the same subject if needed — this is the most reliable way to find the best fit.
Can I book a home tutor from Tuition.in?
Yes — filter Teaching mode to "Home tuition" and your city. The tutor's profile will show their availability. Contact them via WhatsApp (shown on profile) to confirm the logistics of home visits.
Is there a refund if the tutor doesn't show up for the demo?
Free demo classes have no payment, so there's nothing to refund. If a tutor doesn't show up for a paid class, you are entitled to a full refund — contact [email protected].
I can't find a tutor for my subject in my city
Remove the city filter and add "Online" as the teaching mode — online tutors from any city can teach you. If you still can't find a match, email [email protected] with your subject and city — we'll try to connect you with a suitable tutor directly.
