CA Final guidance: how the paper is cracked, from your own numbers

Conducted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), a statutory body under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949. How it's decided
CA Final, stage by stage
Three times a year — May, September and January sittings. Pen-and-paper at ICAI centres for the first five papers; Paper 6 is a four-hour open-book case-study examination where approved reference material may be carried in.
Both groups of Intermediate + ICITSSPrerequisite before articleship and Final registration
Final registration requires both Intermediate groups cleared. Articleship begins once Group I is cleared and the basic ICITSS courses are done; Group II can be cleared while articleship is already running.
Articleship — two years, with Final sat near the endPractical training running alongside exam preparation
Under the New Scheme, articleship runs two years. ICAI permits sitting the Final examination during the last six months of this period, so most candidates prepare for Final while still completing their training rather than waiting until it concludes.
Self-Paced Online Modules — SET A, B, C, DCompulsory between Intermediate and Final
SET A (Corporate and Economic Laws) and SET B (Strategic Cost and Performance Management) are compulsory subjects in their own right, no longer separate Final papers. SET C is an elective from a specialist list; SET D covers multidisciplinary case studies and soft skills. All four must be passed before the Final examination form is accepted, and their content resurfaces directly inside Paper 6.
Advanced ICITSS — Advanced IT and Management & Communication SkillsMandatory training before the exam form is accepted
A short, structured course, distinct from the basic ICITSS taken before articleship, that must be completed with its Advanced IT test cleared before Final eligibility is granted.
CA Final — two groups of three papers, 600 marksThe qualifying examination
Group I: Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management, Advanced Auditing Assurance and Professional Ethics. Group II: Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation, Indirect Tax Laws, Integrated Business Solutions. Both groups, plus completed articleship and AICITSS, are required for ICAI membership.
Membership and Certificate of PracticeAdmission to ICAI as a Chartered Accountant
Clearing both Final groups, completing articleship in full, and satisfying all training requirements admits a candidate to ICAI membership, after which a Certificate of Practice can be obtained to sign audit reports and practise independently.

What changed this cycle
Things last year's advice gets wrong
The New Scheme of Education and Training reduced Final from eight papers (including a Group II elective chosen from six options) to six fixed papers with no elective.
Paper 6, Integrated Business Solutions, is entirely new: an open-book, four-hour, case-study-only paper testing integrated application across Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management, Advanced Auditing, both tax papers, Corporate and Economic Laws, and Strategic Cost and Performance Management at once.
All six papers now carry a 30% (Paper 6: 40%) objective component built on case scenarios rather than standalone recall, mirroring the format introduced at Intermediate level, and there is no negative marking anywhere at Final either.
Financial Reporting has moved fully to Ind AS-only content — the old AS-vs-Ind-AS dual coverage is gone, since Ind AS is now examined in depth from Intermediate Advanced Accounting onward. Advanced Auditing has absorbed newer standards on quality management, digital auditing, remote auditing, and ESG/SDG assurance as emerging areas.
The chapters that carry the marks
Where a plan for CA Final usually starts
The highest-weight chapters in each subject, linked to their notes. Weights are estimates from previous papers where the conducting body publishes none. Your guide weighs these against your own scores.

How is the CA Final paper marked?
Group I — Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management, Advanced Auditing: 300 marks, 3 hours per paper. Marking: None. Every MCQ should be attempted regardless of certainty.
Is there negative marking in CA Final?
No. None. Every MCQ should be attempted regardless of certainty.
What decides the final merit in CA Final?
Six papers of 100 marks each, arranged in two groups of three, sat only after both groups of Intermediate are cleared and articleship is under way. Five of the six papers follow the same internal split as Intermediate — 70 marks descriptive and 30 marks case-scenario MCQ, with no negative marking anywhere. The sixth, Integrated Business Solutions, breaks that pattern deliberately: it is open-book, run over four hours instead of three, built from five 25-mark case studies of which you attempt four, and split 60 descriptive to 40 MCQ within each case.
What has changed in CA Final recently?
The New Scheme of Education and Training reduced Final from eight papers (including a Group II elective chosen from six options) to six fixed papers with no elective. Corporate and Economic Laws and Strategic Cost and Performance Management, formerly standalone Final papers, are gone as independent papers — their content is now examined only as compulsory Self-Paced Online Modules (SET A and SET B) between Intermediate and Final, and integratively within Paper 6.
