JEE Advanced guidance: how the paper is cracked, from your own numbers
Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) — the entrance route to the IITs. Conducted by IIT Roorkee (JEE Advanced 2026), under the Joint Admission Board. Arjun knows this paper from the site's own pattern pages — and reads your scores, your mocks and what you haven't touched before saying a word.

How it's decided
JEE Advanced, stage by stage
Once a year, in May, organised by a rotating IIT. Computer-based test — two papers with mixed question types including MCQ, multiple-correct, integer/decimal and matching-list.
JEE Main Paper 1 — qualifying stageOnly the top 2.5 lakh proceed
Ranking among the top 2,50,000 candidates across all categories in JEE Main Paper 1 is what makes a candidate eligible to register for JEE Advanced. The JEE Main score itself carries no weight beyond this eligibility gate.
JEE Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2Produces the All India Rank used for IIT admission
Both papers, 180 marks each, on the same day. Three sections per paper — Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — with mixed question types whose marking scheme is stated in the paper's instructions. Aggregate marks across both papers determine the rank.
JoSAA counselling, and AAT where applicableSeat allocation
The rank feeds JoSAA counselling across the IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs in a common process. Arch at IIT Kharagpur or IIT Roorkee must additionally clear the Architecture Aptitude Test.

Marking: Varies by year and by question type. Single-correct MCQs typically carry a penalty; multiple-correct questions usually offer partial marks with a penalty for any wrong selection; integer and decimal answers often carry no penalty. The exact scheme is announced in each paper's instructions.
varies by year
PhysicsChemistryMathematics
Both papers are compulsory and both cover all three subjects. Because the question-type mix changes from year to year, the total question count is not fixed — only the 180 marks per paper is.
Where the marks come from
Where JEE Advanced's 360 marks come from
Two compulsory papers on the same day, three hours each, 180 marks apiece. Both papers cover all three subjects, so Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics each contribute roughly 120 marks across the two.
Physics120 marks · 33.3%
Roughly 120 marks across the two papers. Advanced Physics is where multi-concept problems concentrate — a single question routinely combines mechanics with electromagnetism or thermodynamics, which is the main difference from JEE Main.
Chemistry120 marks · 33.3%
Roughly 120 marks. Physical Chemistry becomes genuinely calculation-heavy and Organic Chemistry moves decisively from products to mechanisms, with multi-step synthesis and stereochemistry carrying far more weight than in JEE Main.
Mathematics120 marks · 33.3%
Roughly 120 marks, and usually the paper's hardest section. Questions are constructed so that the correct first step is not obvious, which rewards candidates who can recognise structure rather than apply a remembered template.
What changed this cycle
Things last year's advice gets wrong
JEE Advanced 2026 is organised by IIT Roorkee and is scheduled for 17 May 2026, with Paper 1 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon and Paper 2 from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The organising IIT rotates annually and does not change the syllabus.
Both papers are compulsory and are written on the same day. A candidate absent from either paper is not considered for ranking at all, which makes pacing across a six-hour examination day part of the preparation rather than an afterthought.
The marking scheme is deliberately not fixed year to year. Partial marking on multiple-correct questions, and whether integer answers carry negative marking, are announced in the instructions of the paper itself — so reading the instruction screen carefully in the first two minutes is genuinely worth marks.
Eligibility is capped at two attempts in two consecutive years, unlike JEE Main's three. This makes the choice of which year to attempt a real strategic decision rather than a formality.
The chapters that carry the marks
Where a plan for JEE Advanced usually starts
The highest-weight chapters in each subject, linked to their notes. Weights are estimates from previous papers where the conducting body publishes none. Your guide weighs these against your own scores.

How is the JEE Advanced paper marked?
JEE Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2 — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics in each: 360 marks, 180 min per paper, two papers on the same day, no sectional time lock within a paper. Marking: Varies by year and by question type. Single-correct MCQs typically carry a penalty; multiple-correct questions usually offer partial marks with a penalty for any wrong selection; integer and decimal answers often carry no penalty. The exact scheme is announced in each paper's instructions.
Is there negative marking in JEE Advanced?
Yes. Varies by year and by question type. Single-correct MCQs typically carry a penalty; multiple-correct questions usually offer partial marks with a penalty for any wrong selection; integer and decimal answers often carry no penalty. The exact scheme is announced in each paper's instructions.
What decides the final merit in JEE Advanced?
Two compulsory papers on the same day, three hours each, 180 marks apiece. Both papers cover all three subjects, so Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics each contribute roughly 120 marks across the two. Unlike JEE Main, the question types and marking scheme are deliberately changed from year to year — single-correct MCQs, multiple-correct MSQs, integer and decimal answers, and matching-list questions appear in varying proportions with partial marking that is announced only in the paper's own instructions.
