About JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is the sole entrance to the Indian Institutes of Technology, and is taken only by candidates who first clear a qualifying rank in JEE Main. It is widely regarded as the most demanding undergraduate examination in the country, and it is deliberately different in kind from JEE Main rather than merely harder.

The paper consists of two compulsory three-hour papers taken on the same day, each covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Question formats change from year to year — single-correct and multiple-correct MCQs, integer and numerical answers, matching lists and paragraph-linked questions — and part of what the exam tests is your ability to handle an unfamiliar format under pressure.

Where JEE Main rewards speed across a wide syllabus, JEE Advanced rewards depth on a narrower one. Questions typically combine two or three concepts, and a candidate who has only drilled standard problem types will find very little that looks familiar.

What a good score unlocks

• A JEE Advanced rank governs admission to the B.Tech, integrated M.Tech and dual-degree programmes at all IITs, allocated through the JoSAA counselling process.
• Qualifying also opens admission to a small number of other institutions that use the Advanced score, including IISc, the IISERs, RGIPT and IIST for certain programmes.
