Indian Folk Art: Madhubani, Warli, Gond for ages 7–14
India has living art traditions that most children only see on souvenirs. Each session takes one: Madhubani from Mithila in Bihar, Warli from the hills of Maharashtra, and Gond from Madhya Pradesh. Children learn where it comes from, the rules that make it recognisable, and paint their own piece in that style with the kit's materials.
One finished painting in each of three Indian folk styles, and the story behind each
How 3 sessions get there
Each session is 75 minutes, live, and builds on the last. Your child is doing something for most of it.
Double-line borders, the fish and peacock motifs, and the difference between colour-filled and line-hatched styles. A bordered painting with fine-liners.
White figures on earth-red paper, built from circles, triangles and lines. A village scene with the spiral of the tarpa dance.
Animals and trees filled with dots and dashes, a style Jangarh Singh Shyam brought to the wider world. A tree-of-life painting.
What's in the Folk Art Kit
Everything your child needs for the sessions arrives in one box before session 1, and all of it is theirs to keep.
- Earth-red handmade paper sheets for Warli
- Cartridge sheets for Madhubani and Gond
- White poster colour
- Black fine-liners in two widths
- Six poster colours
- Two fine round brushes
- Reference cards for each style
Live with a coach, hands on the kit
Here is session 2. The coach shows one idea, the children try it straight away with the kit, and they hold their work up to the camera for feedback.
