Drawing & Painting Basics for ages 5–12
Children who say 'I can't draw' usually haven't been shown how to look. This workshop teaches the basics artists learn first: breaking things into shapes, shading to make them solid, mixing colours rather than using them straight, and controlling watercolour. Each session ends with a finished piece for the portfolio.
A small portfolio of four finished pieces, from a shaded sketch to a watercolour landscape
How 4 sessions get there
Each session is 60 minutes, live, and builds on the last. Your child is doing something for most of it.
Draw everyday objects by breaking them into circles, boxes and cones. A still life of three things from home.
Pencil grades, shading from light to dark, and the shadow that makes an object sit on a table.
Primary and secondary colours, warm and cool, and a colour wheel painted from just three tubes.
Wet-on-wet skies and layered hills. A small landscape to finish the portfolio.
What's in the Young Artist Kit
Everything your child needs for the sessions arrives in one box before session 1, and all of it is theirs to keep.
- A4 sketchbook, 120 gsm
- Graphite pencils: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
- Kneaded eraser and sharpener
- 12-colour watercolour set
- Two round brushes
- Mixing palette
- Pad of watercolour paper
Live with a coach, hands on the kit
Here is session 2. The coach shows one idea, the children try it straight away with the kit, and they hold their work up to the camera for feedback.
What your family needs to know
You'll need
- Two jars of water and an old cloth
- A table that can get a little messy
Ready if
Your child is 5 or older and enjoys making pictures, at any level.
Where you come in
Put the finished pieces up somewhere visible. It changes how children see themselves as artists.
Reserve a seat
guru.cool will call to confirm a batch time and the fee, and where the kit should go.
