Overview
The student Learning Genome shows a student what they know and what they don't. This is the same idea for the institution: twenty-five signals in seven areas (what families say, how students do, who shows up, who comes in, who stays, the money, the people), each read from your records and judged against a line. The diagnosis then ranks what to fix first, what to keep doing, and what you aren't measuring.
The five states
| State | Means |
|---|---|
| Working | Measured on enough records and on the good side of its line. |
| Steady | Measured, between the two edges of its line; or no line and no earlier period to compare with yet. |
| Not working | Measured on enough records and past the line that counts as a problem. |
| Too few to judge | Some records, not enough to be fair. The cell shows how many it has and how many it needs, and it is never coloured. |
| Not measured | Nothing recorded yet. It is a blind spot, and says how to start measuring it. |
Each state is shown with its icon and its word, never by colour alone.
Reading the page
- Fix this first: the most important thing not working, with its numbers, the line drawn as a gauge, families' words where they apply, and one button to the screen where you act on it. Beside it, what is working best and the next thing to measure.
- Your genome: every signal as a base on one strand, grouped by area, then the same signals as cells. Each cell shows its value and a small gauge: the three zones of its line, and a marker where you are. An arrow shows which way it moved since the period before.
- Select a base or a cell for its detail: the value and how many records it rests on, the gauge with both edges of the line, what the line is and where it comes from, the trend, and a link to the records.
- Read again recomputes from your records; otherwise the page is kept for ten minutes.
- Reviews & listings is the second tab: see Reviews and listings.
The signals and their lines
Every line names its source. Where no published figure exists, the line says "set by tuition.in" with its reasoning; signals with no line at all are judged against your own previous period, and only when that period was measured too.
| Area | Signal | Held to | Where the line comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| What families say | tuition.in rating | 4.5 or more working, under 4.0 not | 68% of people use a business only with 4 stars or more; 31% want 4.5 (BrightLocal, 2026) |
| What families say | Rating across the web | the same | the same, over every listing you confirm |
| What families say | Parents who'd recommend you | +50 or more working, under +30 not | Net Promoter Score: education averaged 42 in 2025; over 50 is excellent |
| What families say | Complaints per 100 students | your previous period | no published line |
| What families say | Complaints closed on time | 90% or more working, under 70% not | the bar Airbnb's best hosts meet for replies within a day |
| What families say | Satisfied with how complaints closed | 4.0 or more working, under 3.0 not | the family's own 1 to 5 rating when a complaint closes |
| How students do | Board pass rate | 5 points above the national pass rate working, below it not | CBSE's published national result for that class and year |
| How students do | Board average | your previous year | no published line |
| How students do | Test and exam average | 75% or more working, under 50% not | 75% is a distinction on most boards; a class under 50% has many near the 33% pass mark |
| Who shows up | Attendance, last 30 days | 92% or more working, under 85% not | missing one day in ten is chronic absence (Attendance Works) |
| Who shows up | Students under 75% attendance | 5% or fewer working, over 10% not | 75% is what a CBSE student needs to sit the board exam |
| Who comes in | First reply to an enquiry | 15 minutes or less working, over an hour not | replies within the hour are about seven times likelier to reach the person (Harvard Business Review) |
| Who comes in | Enquiries that visited | your previous period | no published line |
| Who comes in | Visits that joined | your previous period | no published line |
| Who comes in | Listing views that enquired | your previous period | no published line |
| Who comes in | Seats filled | 90% or more working, under 70% not | set by tuition.in |
| Who stays | Students who left this year | 5% or fewer working, over 15% not | keeping over 85% a year is the usual school target (OpenEduCat) |
| Who stays | Students who joined again (batches) | 60% or more working, under 30% not | set by tuition.in |
| The money | Fees collected of what's due | 95% or more working, under 85% not | 95% of billed fees is the usual school target (OpenEduCat) |
| The money | Overdue for more than 60 days | 20% or less working, over 40% not | set by tuition.in: dues get harder to collect as they age |
| The money | Fees given up in concessions | your previous period | no published line |
| The money | Left after expenses and salaries | 15% or more working, below zero not | cash in less expenses and salaries paid, last 90 days |
| The people | Staff attendance, last 30 days | 95% or more working, under 90% not | set by tuition.in |
| The people | Classroom observations | 4.0 or more working, under 3.0 not | the observation form's own 1 to 5 scale |
| The people | Staff who left, last 12 months | 10% or fewer working, over 20% not | set by tuition.in |
Each signal also needs a minimum number of records before it is judged: five ratings, ten survey answers, fifty attendance marks, and so on.
The diagnosis
Three lists under the genome:
- Not working, ranked by how far past the line, how sure (how many records) and how much rides on it. Each has the numbers behind it, the records it rests on, the line and its source, and one action.
- Working: keep doing these, and say them in your ads and posters.
- Blind spots: what you aren't measuring, the most revealing first, with how to start.
Quotes are always families' own words from real reviews: the part of the sentence about that topic, with an ellipsis where it is cut. They are chosen, never written.
Findings across areas
Some findings join two areas, which is where the genome earns its name:
- What the students who left this year had in common (fees long overdue, low attendance, a complaint), against those who stayed.
- A topic families criticise in reviews that your complaint log also shows (transport, fees, safety…).
- Slow first replies alongside few enquiries visiting.
- A class at the bottom for both attendance and marks.
- Overdue fees concentrated in a few classes; the weakest subjects in tests.
- Your weakest listing on the web, a rating that fell over three months, most of your reviews living on another site, and a strong rating worth putting on posters.
For tutors
Tutors get the same page with the signals that apply to them: reviews, batch exam marks, live-class attendance, enquiries and demo classes, students who joined again, and batch fees.
Who sees what
The owner sees everything. A team member sees only the areas their part of the dashboard covers (Team access): the money needs Fees or Accounts, the people need Staff or Payroll, how students do needs Exams, and so on, and only findings built from those areas.
Questions
Why is a signal I can see in my records "too few to judge"? It has records, but fewer than it needs to be fair. Judging four reviews would swing on one family.
Can we change the lines? Not yet. Every line is published on this page so you can see what you are held to.
Does anyone else see our genome? No. It is computed from your records for you and your team only.
Part of the page says it couldn't be read. One kind of record didn't load; those signals show as not measured. Read again in a minute.
