Phonics & Reading Readiness for ages 4–7
Phonics teaches children that letters stand for sounds, and that sounds blend into words. It is how most children learn to read in English. Five short, active sessions take your child from single letter sounds to blending three-letter words and the common two-letter sounds, finishing with decodable mini-books they can read themselves.
Blending sounds to read simple words, and their first little books read on their own
How 5 sessions get there
Each session is 40 minutes, live, and builds on the last. Your child is doing something for most of it.
The first group of letter sounds with actions and songs, using the kit's sound cards.
Push sounds together to read words like c-a-t and s-i-t, building them with the magnetic letters.
The next letter group and the first tricky words that do not follow the rules.
sh, ch, th and ck. Read and build words with them.
Read a decodable mini-book aloud, then a second one, to the group.
What's in the First Reader Kit
Everything your child needs for the sessions arrives in one box before session 1, and all of it is theirs to keep.
- Letter-sound picture cards
- Lower-case magnetic letters
- Six decodable mini-books
- Sound-practice chart with stickers
Live with a coach, hands on the kit
Here is session 2. The coach shows one idea, the children try it straight away with the kit, and they hold their work up to the camera for feedback.
What your family needs to know
You'll need
- A fridge or metal tray for the magnetic letters
- A parent nearby for every session
Ready if
Your child is 4 or older and enjoys songs and picture books.
Where you come in
Sit beside your child for every session; at this age it is part of the workshop. Five minutes of sound cards a day makes the difference.
Reserve a seat
guru.cool will call to confirm a batch time and the fee, and where the kit should go.
