IBPS PO Mains — Descriptive Paper

Twenty-five marks and half an hour, immediately after a three-hour objective paper. It is the least practised part of the mains and one of the most decisive, because the objective section is scored so tightly that these marks move ranks.

Respected Sir, I want to inform you that on 12th of this month I tried to withdraw Rs 10000 from your ATM but the cash did not come out. However the amount was debited from my account. It has been more than 15 days and the money has not come back. Please look into this matter and reverse the amount as soon as possible. Thanking you. I visited the branch on the same day and informed the staff at the counter, and I was told that the amount would come back automatically within a few days. I waited, but nothing has happened so far and I have not received any message from the bank either. I called the customer care number twice and on both occasions I was asked to wait for some more days. Because of this my monthly payments have been affected and I am facing difficulty.

What the examiner wanted and did not find
  • A subject line — one line, and it is worth marks on every format question
  • Account number, ATM ID or location, and the transaction reference
  • A specific ask: reversal plus compensation for the delay beyond the prescribed period
Model answer for this question

Open with the recipient block and a subject line: Complaint regarding non-reversal of a failed ATM transaction dated 12 June. Paragraph one, the facts with account number, ATM location, amount, date and reference. Paragraph two, the action taken so far and the period elapsed. Paragraph three, the specific request: reversal and compensation for delay, with a response timeframe. Close with Yours faithfully and your name.

Format — address block, subject line, salutation, sign-off1/3

Salutation and a closing are present; no subject line and no address block. This is the cheapest mark on the paper to earn.

Content — the facts a bank needs to act2/3

Date and amount given; the account number, ATM location and transaction reference are what would let the branch trace it.

Tone and register2/2

Firm and polite, correctly pitched for a formal complaint.

Grammar and length control2/2

Clean, and comfortably inside the word limit.
