PSU via GATE: the technical & HR interview, from your Application form to the report

What a mock looks like in the room, step by step. The panel, its order, the form and the qualities are the real round's; the words and numbers are illustrative.

1
You fill in your Application form once

The panel has your application: your degree and branch, your project, any job, and your score. Expect your own branch from first principles within the first five minutes.

The board asks, one member at a time

In the order the real one moves: opening, then core branch, then plant practice, then project, then HR, then close. Follow-ups come from what you just said.

3
You answer out loud

Speak as you would in the room, or type. Your pace, long pauses and filler words are measured as you go — and, if your camera is on, how often you look toward it.

The report says what to fix

Scored on the 6 qualities this round is assessed on, member by member, with every line of your Application form marked as held up, shaky or not yet asked. A practice estimate, never a forecast.

1
Technical & HR Interview
Conversation 15–30 minutes

A panel of senior engineers from the company, with an HR member.

PSU interview panels test whether a GATE score is backed by understanding: the candidate's branch from first principles, the practical problems of a plant or a pipeline, and whether they will stay in a remote posting.
  1. 1 Opening
  2. 2 Core branch
  3. 3 Plant practice
  4. 4 Project
  5. 5 HR
  6. 6 Close

Each PSU sets its own weights. NTPC's Engineering Executive Trainee recruitment, for example, counts GATE 85%, the group discussion 5% and the interview 10%, with qualifying marks needed in the GD and interview whatever the GATE score. The group discussion is the next round here.

Assessed on: Command of fundamentals · Applied problem solving · Depth of own work · Clarity · Intellectual honesty · Motivation and fit

2
Group Discussion
Group discussion 15–20 minutes

In the real discussion eight to twelve engineers sit together. Here you sit it with five others.

PSU panels use the group discussion to see how a GATE topper works with peers: whether they reason from facts, listen, and can lead a team on a plant floor.
  1. 1 The topic
  2. 2 Discussion
  3. 3 Close

Qualifying at most PSUs, and weighted where it counts: NTPC gives it 5% of the final score. You must clear it whatever your GATE score.

About the PSU via GATE interview

What rounds does the PSU Technical Interview (through GATE) interview have?
NTPC, IOCL, PGCIL, BHEL, GAIL, ONGC and other public-sector companies shortlist engineers on their GATE score, then decide with a group discussion and a technical and HR interview. In order: Technical & HR Interview (conversation, 15–30 minutes); Group Discussion (group discussion, 15–20 minutes).
What does the board assess?
Command of fundamentals, Applied problem solving, Depth of own work, Clarity, Intellectual honesty, Motivation and fit. Not published by the companies — these are the areas PSU technical panels consistently test.
What will I be asked about?
The panel has your application: your degree and branch, your project, any job, and your score. Expect your own branch from first principles within the first five minutes. The Application form lines it draws on: name, home district and state, degree and branch, final-year project and internships, work experience, hobbies and interests, and more.
Can I practise the PSU via GATE interview online?
Yes. The Practice Studio runs a mock of each round the way the real one moves — a 4-member panel taking turns in the real order — and scores you on the same criteria. You can also book a real interviewer for a free, demo or paid session by video.
Can I practise it in Hindi?
Yes. The AI board can conduct the whole interview in हिन्दी (Hindi), as a Hindi-medium board does, and you can answer in Hindi or English.
