Why this chapter matters in CA Foundation
Paper 3 is the only Foundation paper with a published internal split — Business Mathematics 40, Logical Reasoning 20, Statistics 40 — and most candidates allocate their time in inverse proportion to return, spending most on the hardest section and least on the easiest. Correcting that allocation is worth more marks than any additional technique. The paper also contains an arithmetic trap that almost every candidate falls into: with four options and a penalty of 0.25, a blind guess has a positive expected value of +0.0625, so leaving questions blank actively costs marks. The penalty punishes carelessness, not attempting.

How to Crack CA Foundation Quantitative Aptitude

Weightage: Paper 3, 100 marks, 100 one-mark multiple-choice questions, two hours. Negative marking of 0.25 for every wrong answer. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

Paper 3 is the only paper at Foundation level with a published internal split, and that fact should drive everything about how you prepare for it:

  • Business Mathematics — 40 marks
  • Logical Reasoning — 20 marks
  • Statistics — 40 marks

Most candidates spend most of their time on Business Mathematics, which is the hardest section, and least on Logical Reasoning, which is the easiest. That allocation is exactly backwards, and correcting it is worth more marks than any additional technique.

The guessing arithmetic

Start here, because almost every candidate gets it wrong and it changes how you sit the paper.

Each question has four options. A correct answer earns +1. A wrong answer costs 0.25. An unattempted question earns nothing and costs nothing.

Suppose you guess entirely at random. You will be right one time in four and wrong three times in four:

Expected value = (1/4 × 1) + (3/4 × −0.25) = 0.25 − 0.1875 = +0.0625

The expected value is positive. Blind guessing gains you marks on average — about one mark for every sixteen questions guessed.

Now suppose you can eliminate one option, leaving three:

Expected value = (1/3 × 1) + (2/3 × −0.25) = 0.3333 − 0.1667 = +0.1667

Also positive, and substantially better.

The general result: with four options, guessing breaks even when the penalty is one-third. CA Foundation's penalty is 0.25, which is less than one-third, so guessing is favourable. Contrast GATE and UPSC, where the penalty of one-third makes a blind guess exactly break-even, and the standard advice to eliminate before guessing genuinely applies.

The rule for this paper is therefore simple: leave nothing blank. All one hundred questions should carry an answer. A candidate who leaves fifteen questions blank out of caution has, on average, given away about one mark against a candidate who guessed them.

What the penalty does punish is carelessness — misreading a question, mis-transcribing a figure, or rushing an answer you could have got right. It does not punish attempting.

Prepare in order of return, not in syllabus order

Logical Reasoning first. Twenty marks that require no formula, no theory and no revision. Number series, coding and decoding, odd man out, direction sense, seating arrangements, blood relations and syllogisms are all pattern-recognition tasks, and pattern recognition improves purely with practice. Unlike Statistics, it does not decay if left for a month. Unlike Business Mathematics, there is nothing to derive.

A candidate who does two hundred Logical Reasoning questions across a preparation cycle will secure close to the full twenty marks. This is the cheapest block anywhere in the Foundation, and it is routinely under-prepared because it does not look like "real" studying.

Statistics second. Forty marks, and the most reliable of the two large sections, because its questions repeat in a narrow set of shapes: measures of central tendency and dispersion, then correlation and regression, then probability and the three standard distributions, then index numbers. Each has a small number of formulas and a predictable question format. Statistics rewards drilling and is largely immune to the trick questions that Business Mathematics permits.

Business Mathematics last, and selectively. Also forty marks, but spread across nine chapters of uneven difficulty. This is where time is lost rather than where marks are won. Ratio and proportion, indices and logarithms, equations, and time value of money are high-frequency and worth full preparation. Permutations and combinations, sequences and series, and basic calculus are worth solid preparation. Matrices and the harder inequality problems can be treated as lower priority if time is short.

Time, and the ninety-second rule

Two hours for one hundred questions is 1.2 minutes per question — seventy-two seconds. That is the average, not the allowance for each: some questions take fifteen seconds and some take three minutes.

The discipline that matters is knowing when to stop. Adopt a ninety-second rule: if a question is not resolving within ninety seconds, mark it, put down a guess, and move on. You can return if time permits, and if you cannot, the guess is already there earning its positive expected value.

Make three passes:

  1. First pass — answer everything you can do quickly and confidently. This should account for roughly half the paper and take about forty minutes.
  2. Second pass — attempt the questions that need working, applying the ninety-second rule strictly.
  3. Third pass — return to the marked questions, and ensure every question has an answer recorded.

Attempt Logical Reasoning early, while you are fresh. It is the section where a careless misreading costs most, because the questions are short and the whole answer turns on one detail.

What the paper actually tests

Business Mathematics questions are rarely difficult mathematically; they are difficult to recognise. The skill worth drilling is identifying the question type from the first reading — this is a compound interest question, this is a combination rather than a permutation, this is an arithmetic progression. Once the type is identified, the method is mechanical.

Statistics questions are mostly computational and reward accuracy. The commonest errors are using the wrong formula for grouped against ungrouped data, forgetting to take a square root, and confusing variance with standard deviation.

Logical Reasoning questions reward careful reading above all. In seating arrangement and blood relation questions, draw the diagram — do not attempt to hold the arrangement in your head. The two minutes spent drawing are recovered several times over.

Practice, and what to practise from

Work from ICAI's own material first: the Study Material, its exercises, the Revision Test Papers and the Mock Test Papers. These are produced by the body that sets the paper and match its style and difficulty closely.

Practise under time. An untimed practice session tests whether you know the method; the exam tests whether you can apply it in seventy-two seconds. Those are different skills, and only the second one is being examined.

Keep an error log classifying every mistake by cause — wrong formula, arithmetic slip, misread question, or method not known. Most candidates find that arithmetic slips and misreadings account for more lost marks than gaps in knowledge, and those are fixed by attention rather than by study.

Build a single formula sheet as you go, one page per section. Statistics in particular has a manageable number of formulas, and being able to recall them instantly is worth more than being able to derive them slowly.

The habits that separate a pass from a comfortable pass

  • Answer all one hundred questions. The expected value of a guess is positive.
  • Do Logical Reasoning first in preparation and early in the exam.
  • Apply the ninety-second rule without negotiation.
  • Draw the diagram for every arrangement, direction and blood relation question.
  • Read the question twice before computing, particularly the units and whether it asks for the value or the change in the value.
  • Check whether a statistics question concerns a sample or a population, and whether the data is grouped or ungrouped, before selecting a formula.
  • Revise from the formula sheet and the error log, not from the chapters.

None of this requires more mathematics. It requires allocating effort to where the marks actually are, and sitting the paper in a way that does not throw marks away.
