Coastal Plains

Andhra Pradesh has a 974 km coastline — the SECOND LONGEST in India (after Gujarat). The coastal plain is DIVIDED into two distinct regions:

Northern Circars (Srikakulam to Krishna district): Broader plain formed by the Godavari and Krishna deltas. Very FERTILE alluvial soil. Intensively cultivated — RICE PADDIES dominate the landscape. Densely populated. The Godavari and Krishna deltas are known as the 'RICE BOWL OF INDIA.'

Coromandel Coast (south of Krishna to Nellore): NARROWER coastal plain. Includes the delta of the Penna River. Moderately fertile. Receives rain from BOTH the SW monsoon and the NE monsoon (October-December). Important for AQUACULTURE — shrimp and fish farming.

Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh

The Eastern Ghats run PARALLEL to the east coast, passing through Andhra Pradesh. They are OLDER and LOWER than the Western Ghats. They are DISCONTINUOUS — cut by the major rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Penna) which flow eastward.

Major Hill Ranges in AP:

The region has BLACK and RED soils. It is prone to CHRONIC DROUGHTS. Groundwater is SCARCE. Major crops: groundnut, cotton, millets, sunflower, and chillies.
