1. What is a Resource?
Anything available in the environment that satisfies human NEEDS and is TECHNOLOGICALLY ACCESSIBLE, ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE, and CULTURALLY ACCEPTABLE is called a resource.
'Resources are FUNCTIONAL — a rock was just a rock until humans learned to make tools from it. Uranium was WASTE until the nuclear age. Resources are DYNAMIC — yesterday's waste is today's resource.'

2. Sustainable Development

- Agenda 21 was adopted — a NON-BINDING action plan for sustainable development for the 21st century.
- Focus: COMBATING poverty, CHANGING consumption patterns, PROTECTING atmosphere, oceans, and biodiversity.

3. Resource Planning in India
India is RICH in resources but UNEVENLY distributed. Jharkhand has minerals but poor infrastructure. Arunachal Pradesh has water but limited roads.

3.2 Conservation of Resources
'We do NOT inherit the Earth from our ancestors. We BORROW it from our children.' Irrational consumption leads to depletion. Conservation is EVERY citizen's duty (Article 51-A(g) of the Constitution — Fundamental Duty).
4. Land Resources
Land is a NATURALLY OCCURRING resource of UTMOST importance. 43% of India's land is plain (agriculture), 30% is mountain (forests, tourism), 27% is plateau (minerals, forests).

Common Mistake: Students often think India has 33% forest cover (National Forest Policy target). ACTUAL forest cover is ~22%. The TARGET was set in 1952 but NEVER achieved.

Causes of Land Degradation:
- Deforestation — clearing forests for agriculture, urbanisation.
- Overgrazing — cattle, goats, sheep destroy grass cover → soil erosion.
- Over-irrigation — waterlogging and SALINISATION (especially in Punjab, Haryana).
- Industrial waste — chemicals poison the soil.
- Mining — leaves LARGE PITS and dumps (e.g., Jharia coal fields).
Conservation Measures:
- Afforestation — plant trees on waste and degraded lands.
- Controlled grazing — rotational grazing systems.
- Shelterbelts — planting rows of trees in DRY regions (Rajasthan).
- Proper irrigation management — drip irrigation, sprinklers.
- Check on mining — restore mined areas (reclamation).
5. Soil as a Resource
Soil is the UPPERMOST LAYER of the Earth's crust, formed by WEATHERING of parent rock. Soil formation depends on: parent rock, climate, relief, vegetation, time, and human activity.

5.2 Soil Erosion and Conservation
Soil erosion is the REMOVAL of topsoil (the MOST fertile layer). Types:
- Sheet erosion — thin layer removed uniformly.
- Rill erosion — small channels (rills) form.
- Gully erosion — rills deepen to GULLIES (badlands).
- Wind erosion — topsoil blown away (desert regions).
