UPPSC PCS, stage by stage

Once a year, though exact months have shifted cycle to cycle in recent years — the 2026 cycle's notification came 25 June 2026 with Prelims set for 6 December 2026; confirm the current UPPSC calendar rather than assuming a fixed month.. Prelims: OMR-based objective, same day — GS Paper I (150 Qs, 200 marks, +1.33/correct, −0.44/wrong) screens candidates into Mains; CSAT Paper II (100 Qs, 200 marks, +2/correct, −0.67/wrong) is qualifying only at 33% (66/200) and its marks do not carry into final merit. Mains: pen-and-paper descriptive, in Hindi or English (General Hindi paper is Hindi-only). Interview: in-person personality test..

Prelims — GS Paper I + CSAT Paper II (shared syllabus with CSE)Screening gate only

Objective papers on the same static-knowledge syllabus as UPSC CSE Prelims. GS Paper I's marks screen candidates into Mains; CSAT Paper II is qualifying only, at 33%.

General Hindi (150) + Essay (150) + General Studies I-IV (200 each, national syllabus mirroring CSE Mains GS1-4) + General Studies V-VI (200 each, wholly on Uttar Pradesh).

Personality Test (Interview)Final 100 marks

Where the marks come from

Where your UPPSC PCS score comes from

Prelims is a screening-only stage — General Studies Paper I plus a qualifying CSAT Paper II, both objective, on the same shared syllabus UPSC CSE Prelims tests. Mains is where merit is actually decided: eight papers worth 1,500 marks, all counting — General Hindi (150), Essay (150), and General Studies I to VI (200 each).

GS V & VI — Uttar Pradesh-specific papers400 marks · 26.7%

The single biggest identifiable block and the one no other exam on this hub prepares you for — treat these 6 UP chapters as non-negotiable, not supplementary.

GS I-IV — national General Studies800 marks · 53.3%

The bulk of Mains marks, and near-identical in spirit to UPSC CSE's own Mains GS1-4 — the aliased chapters here are shared with CSE.

Essay150 marks · 10%

Three shorter essays (one per section) rather than CSE's two longer ones — practise the tighter word count.

General Hindi150 marks · 10%

A language-skill paper (comprehension, précis, drafting) — outside this hub's chapter format, but worth dedicated practice given its 10% weight.

What changed this cycle

Things last year's advice gets wrong

  • " UPPSC committed to a single-shift, single-day PCS Prelims from the December 2024 cycle onward, and has continued that format since — this specific controversy is resolved in practice for PCS.
  • No cap on the number of PCS attempts, unlike UPSC CSE — a genuinely favourable structural difference worth knowing if you're weighing UPPSC against CSE.
  • India's criminal-procedure and evidence framework changed structurally on 1 July 2024: the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) replaced the CrPC and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) replaced the Indian Evidence Act — relevant wherever GS II/III content touches law and order or internal security.

Prelims — GS Paper I + CSAT Paper II (shared with CSE): 400 marks, 2 hours per paper. Marking: GS Paper I: −0.44 per wrong answer (⅓ of its 1.33-mark value). CSAT Paper II: −0.67 per wrong answer (⅓ of its 2-mark value). Marking more than one option is treated as wrong; unattempted is neutral.

What decides the final merit in UPPSC PCS?
Prelims is a screening-only stage — General Studies Paper I plus a qualifying CSAT Paper II, both objective, on the same shared syllabus UPSC CSE Prelims tests. Mains is where merit is actually decided: eight papers worth 1,500 marks, all counting — General Hindi (150), Essay (150), and General Studies I to VI (200 each). GS I to IV mirror UPSC CSE Mains GS1-4 almost exactly; GS V and GS VI are examined entirely on Uttar Pradesh's own history, polity, economy and geography, and are what genuinely separates a UPPSC attempt from a CSE one.
What has changed in UPPSC PCS recently?
" UPPSC committed to a single-shift, single-day PCS Prelims from the December 2024 cycle onward, and has continued that format since — this specific controversy is resolved in practice for PCS. Do not confuse this with UPPSC's separate RO/ARO (Review Officer/Assistant Review Officer) exam, a different, much larger-pool exam where the multi-shift/normalisation question remains unresolved and under committee review.
