UPPSC PCS Mains — Answer Writing

UPPSC dropped the optional subject and put six General Studies papers in its place, so the mains is now almost entirely general — and almost every paper expects Uttar Pradesh's own institutions, schemes and history somewhere in the answer.

ODOP was launched by the UP government to promote local products of every district. It has helped artisans get loans and marketing support. Many districts like Bhadohi and Moradabad have benefited. However there are still problems like lack of finance and market linkage. The scheme should be strengthened. The scheme was announced in 2018 and one product was identified for every district of the state, such as chikankari of Lucknow, carpets of Bhadohi, brassware of Moradabad and glass work of Firozabad. Artisans are given toolkits, skill training and margin money support, and the district administration organises exhibitions and buyer seller meets where they can show their products. Even after this most artisans still sell through traders who take a large share of the final price, designs have not changed with the market, and the younger generation is leaving the craft for factory work in other states.

ODOP was launched by the UP government to promote local products of every district. It has helped artisans get loans and marketing support. Many districts like Bhadohi and Moradabad have benefited. StrongNaming districts and their crafts is exactly what a UPPSC state-paper answer is marked for.
VagueThe two constraints are named but not explained — credit access for unregistered artisans, and the absence of GI branding.
What the examiner wanted and did not find
  • GI tags as the branding instrument the scheme relies on
  • Credit access for unregistered artisans and the CFC model
  • Linkage with the Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana
Model answer for this question

Part 1 — what ODOP does: one product per district, common facility centres, credit subvention, marketing. Part 2 — evidence it worked: Bhadohi carpets, Moradabad brassware, Firozabad glass, with export and GI examples. Part 3 — constraints: informal artisan base outside formal credit, weak GI enforcement, design and e-commerce gaps. Close with one specific fix, not a general appeal.

Write on real paper

Photograph the page from your phone and the Studio reads your handwriting — the only way to practise the speed and layout the paper actually tests.

Marked in about twenty seconds

Fast enough to write, read the report and rewrite the same answer in one sitting — which is where the improvement actually comes from.

Examiner criteria
Directive — examined rather than described1/3

Mostly description. An examination weighs how far the claim holds.

State specificity — districts, crafts, institutions2/3

Two districts named; the craft each is known for would have doubled the value.

Constraints, with mechanism1/2

Listed, not explained.

Structure and word discipline1/2

No visible structure for a 10-mark answer; three short headed parts would read better.
