UPSC IFoS, stage by stage

Once a year, run alongside the CSE cycle (notification ~Feb; Prelims ~May, same day as CSE Prelims; Mains ~Nov-Dec; Interview the following year). Prelims & Mains: pen-and-paper (OMR for Prelims, descriptive/written for Mains); Interview: in-person personality test board.

Prelims — GS Paper I + CSAT (shared with CSE)Screening gate only

The identical two objective papers as UPSC CSE Prelims: GS Paper I (100 Qs · 200 marks · −1/3 per wrong answer) and CSAT Paper II (80 Qs · 200 marks · qualifying at 33%, also −1/3 per wrong answer). Only GS Paper I's marks are used to screen candidates into Mains; CSAT is qualifying only.

Mains — 6 written papersThe real scoring stage — 1,400 marks

General English (300) + General Knowledge (300) + two optional subjects, two papers each (400 + 400). Unlike CSE, both compulsory papers count fully toward merit — there is no qualifying-only language paper.

Personality Test (Interview)Final 300 marks

A board interview assessing suitability for a forest-service career specifically — technical grounding in the chosen optional subjects, awareness of forest policy and conservation issues, and general personality. Final merit = Mains 1,400 + Interview 300 = 1,700 marks.

Where the marks come from

Where your IFoS score comes from

IFoS Prelims is the exact same question papers as UPSC CSE Prelims, sat on the same day — GS Paper I (200 marks, screens you into Mains) and CSAT Paper II (200 marks, qualifying at 33%).

Polity & Governance40 marks · 20%

18–22 questions — the single biggest GS1 block, identical to CSE's own Prelims weightage since it's the same paper.

History & Culture36 marks · 18%

16–20 questions spanning Ancient to Modern India plus Art & Culture.

Economy30 marks · 15%

13–17 questions, heavily budget- and policy-linked.

Environment & Ecology24 marks · 12%

10–14 questions — worth extra attention for IFoS candidates specifically, since it's also the closest Prelims subject to the forest-service career itself.

Geography24 marks · 12%

10–14 questions, map-heavy.

Science & Technology20 marks · 10%

8–12 questions, mostly current-affairs-driven.

Current affairs & static-GK application26 marks · 13%

The remaining ~13 questions apply the same static base to recent news — built by daily reading, not a chapter list.

What changed this cycle

Things last year's advice gets wrong

  • IFoS Prelims is literally the same exam as CSE Prelims — same GS Paper I, same CSAT Paper II, sat on the same day. A candidate can apply for both CSE and IFoS with one Prelims attempt and diverge only from Mains onward.
  • Unlike CSE, IFoS's General English and General Knowledge Mains papers are NOT qualifying-only — both count fully toward the 1,400-mark Mains merit, alongside two optional science/engineering subjects (400 marks each) chosen from a list of ~21 (Forestry, Agriculture, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Geology, and several engineering disciplines).
  • This hub currently builds the shared Prelims GS1 + CSAT foundation (identical chapters to UPSC CSE, so any CSE prep already covers this) plus an IFoS-specific exam-strategy chapter.
  • Selection is far smaller in scale than CSE — roughly 80 vacancies a year versus CSE's 900+ — which raises the effective cutoff and interview weight per candidate.
