UPSC Indian Forest Service Mains — Answer Writing
IFoS shares its prelims with the Civil Services but not its mains. Here two optional science subjects carry four of the six papers, which means writing technical answers under time pressure — the skill least served by the reading most candidates do.
All questions are compulsory. The number of marks carried by a question is indicated against it.
- 1.Discuss the ecological and livelihood implications of monoculture plantations in India's degraded forest landscapes, and suggest an alternative approach.15250 words
- 2.Explain the significance of the Forest Rights Act, 2006 in the governance of community forest resources.10150 words
- 3.Describe the major forest types of India and the factors determining their distribution.10150 words
One IFoS Mains answer, from question to marked report
A real question, an attempt with the weaknesses a real attempt has, and the report an AI examiner hands back — in the marking unit IFoS Mains genuinely uses. This is the whole product; there is nothing else to sign up for.
Scoped to the paper and topic you pick, at the marks it is genuinely set at.
Discuss the ecological and livelihood implications of monoculture plantations in India's degraded forest landscapes, and suggest an alternative approach.
Type it, dictate it, or write on paper and photograph the page — your handwriting is read.
Photographed, read, and marked in red — every criterion scored down the right margin and the omissions written in.
Monoculture plantations like eucalyptus and teak are grown in degraded forests. They grow fast and give timber.? But they reduce biodiversity and lower the water table. Local people also lose access to minor forest produce. So mixed native species should be planted instead. Degraded forest land in India is very large and plantation programmes were taken up to increase green cover quickly. Eucalyptus is preferred because it survives in poor soil and gives a quick return to the forest corporation, and the same species is planted in straight rows over a large block. When only one species is planted the forest floor does not get enough light and the natural undergrowth does not come back. Birds and insects which depend on native trees go away and the food chain is affected. Eucalyptus needs a lot of water and in dry districts the wells of nearby villages have gone dry after a few years. Fruits, leaves, gum and medicinal plants which the villagers used to collect from the natural forest are not available in a plantation, so the cash income of the household during the lean season falls and grazing land also reduces. The plantation has to be protected from the same villagers, which creates conflict with the department. Therefore the species should be chosen according to the local ecology and the villagers should be consulted before the work is taken up.
- Assisted natural regeneration as the ecologically preferred route on degraded land
- Forest Rights Act 2006 and community forest resource rights
- The distinction between forest cover and forest quality in the State of Forest Report
Model answer for this question
Frame it as a trade-off between forest COVER and forest QUALITY. Ecological: reduced structural and species diversity, altered hydrology under high-transpiration exotics, soil nutrient mining, poor habitat value. Livelihood: NTFP loss, grazing exclusion, conflict with community forest resource rights under FRA. Alternative: assisted natural regeneration where rootstock survives, mixed indigenous species where it does not, agroforestry on the fringe, and JFM-based benefit sharing.
Photograph the page from your phone and the Studio reads your handwriting — the only way to practise the speed and layout the paper actually tests.
Fast enough to write, read the report and rewrite the same answer in one sitting — which is where the improvement actually comes from.
The scoring behind those pen marks: every criterion, what it was worth, what you earned, and a model answer.
Biodiversity and water noted; soil nutrient depletion, allelopathy and loss of understorey are absent.
NTFP access named. The Forest Rights Act and community forest resource rights would have anchored it.
Species named correctly; no reference to succession or assisted natural regeneration.
Mixed native species is right but generic — name ANR, agroforestry, or the Joint Forest Management model.
