NEET PG 2026 — Complete MD/MS Entrance Preparation Course

NEET PG is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences and is the single entrance examination for MD, MS, DNB and PG Diploma seats across India. For an MBBS graduate it is effectively the only route into a clinical residency, which makes it one of the highest-stakes examinations any Indian professional sits. The 2026 cycle brings a significant revision. NBEMS's Information Bulletin cut the paper from the earlier 200-question, 800-mark pattern to 180 questions for 720 marks, held on 30 August 2026 in a single computer-based shift from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Every question is a single-best-answer MCQ with four options, marked +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one, with no partial credit and no penalty for questions left blank. On exam day the 180 questions are administratively split into five time-locked groups of 36 questions and 42 minutes each. You must complete each group in sequence, and once a group's timer lapses you cannot return to it. This deliberately shuffles subjects together, so you cannot plan to attempt an entire subject in one stretch — pacing has to be managed group by group rather than across the paper as a whole. The distribution of questions is what should drive preparation, and it rarely does. Clinical subjects carry well over half the paper — Medicine alone is around 28 questions and Surgery around 21 — while the entire pre-clinical block of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry together accounts for roughly 24. Candidates who revise in the order they studied at medical school invert the actual weighting. Eligibility & who can join: • An MBBS degree from a medical college recognised by the National Medical Commission, together with a permanent or provisional registration certificate. • Candidates must have completed, or be due to complete, one year of compulsory rotating medical internship by the cut-off date specified in the information bulletin. • There is no upper age limit and no cap on the number of attempts. • Qualifying percentiles are set by NBEMS for each cycle and vary by category; counselling is conducted separately through MCC for the All India Quota and by state authorities for state quotas. • Always confirm eligibility, internship cut-off dates and the exam pattern against the official Information Bulletin at natboard.edu.in. How the course is structured: The course is taught in the order the exam rewards rather than the order medical school teaches. Clinical subjects come first and carry the most teaching time, because Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Pediatrics together account for close to half the paper. Pre-clinical subjects are taught for what NEET PG actually asks of them — high-yield, recall-dense areas such as neuroanatomy, cardiovascular physiology and inborn errors of metabolism — rather than as a full re-reading of first-year texts. Para-clinical subjects sit between the two, with Pathology, Pharmacology and Community Medicine treated as major subjects in their own right given their question share. Because the paper runs as five locked groups of 36 questions in 42 minutes, mocks reproduce that grouping so pacing is practised under the real constraint.
