The ESE personality test, from your DAF to the report

What a mock looks like in the room, step by step. The panel, its order, the form and the qualities are the real personality test's; the words and numbers are illustrative.

1
You fill in your DAF once

The ESE board reads your DAF as an engineer's CV: your branch, your final-year project, any job, and the service you want. Expect a core concept from your branch within the first five minutes.

The board asks, one member at a time

In the order the real one moves: opening, then core engineering, then projects, then infrastructure, then ethics, then close. Follow-ups come from what you just said.

3
You answer out loud

Speak as you would in the room, or type. Your pace, long pauses and filler words are measured as you go — and, if your camera is on, how often you look toward it.

The report says what to fix

Scored on the 7 qualities this personality test is assessed on, member by member, with every line of your DAF marked as held up, shaky or not yet asked. A practice estimate, never a forecast.

A Member of the Commission in the chair. Senior, measured and courteous; opens from the application form, keeps the conversation on course and closes it.

Member 1 · Core engineering

A senior engineer from the candidate's branch. One core concept, then a real-world application of it in a government project.

Member 2 · Projects

A member who takes the final-year project and any job on the form and asks what the candidate personally did.

Member 3 · Infrastructure

An infrastructure-policy specialist: railways, power, water, standards and technology choices as trade-offs.

Member 4 · Ethics

A member who tests integrity as an engineer-administrator: contractors, safety, quality, deadlines.

What the board assess

7 things the board is weighing

Mental alertness

Grasps what was actually asked and answers that, quickly and without drifting.

Critical powers of assimilation

Takes in a new fact or a counter-view and works it into the answer instead of repeating the first position.

Clear and logical exposition

Says it in an order the listener can follow: position, reason, example.

Balance of judgement

Weighs both sides and lands somewhere defensible — neither fence-sitting nor dogmatic.

Variety and depth of interest

The interests on the form survive a second and a third question.

Social cohesion and leadership

Instinct to bring people along — how conflict, teams and the vulnerable are handled.

Intellectual and moral integrity

Says "I don't know" rather than bluffing, and does not change a view just to please the board.
