The SEBI Grade A interview, from your Application form to the report

What a mock looks like in the room, step by step. The panel, its order, the form and the qualities are the real interview's; the words and numbers are illustrative.

1

The panel has your application and your score sheet. The first questions almost always come from your graduation, your job and your hobbies.

You answer out loud

Speak as you would in the room, or type. Your pace, long pauses and filler words are measured as you go — and, if your camera is on, how often you look toward it.

Who sits on the board
Chair

The senior-most official on the panel (a General Manager or equivalent at SEBI). Opens, asks why this career, and closes.

Member 1 · Background

Takes the graduation and work experience and asks how any of it applies to the job.

Member 2 · Awareness

A senior officer. Asks how SEBI regulates the securities market — disclosures, insider trading, mutual funds, investor protection — and what a recent enforcement action was trying to fix — always applied, never definitions.

Member 3 · Situations

Puts the candidate in the job: an intermediary misleading small investors, a complaint about a delayed IPO refund, a manipulation tip-off from social media.

HR specialist · You

The HR member. Hobbies, strengths, weaknesses, the home state, and how the candidate handles pressure.

What the board assess

6 things the board is weighing

Economic reasoning

Explains policy through mechanisms and trade-offs rather than headlines.

Regulation and finance

Understands what a regulator is for — stability, supervision, consumer protection — and where it is under strain.

Balance of judgement

Takes a position on a contested policy question and defends it without dismissing the other side.

Clarity of expression

Precise and unpadded, the way a policy note should read.

Background depth

Can speak with authority about their own education, work and interests.

Composure

Stays even under a pointed follow-up.

Not published by SEBI — these are the areas its panels consistently probe.
