Economic, Population, Settlement & Models — UPSC Geography Optional Paper I

Weightage: Units 7 to 10 of Paper I. Unit 10 on models is the most predictable block in either paper — the models are named in the syllabus and are examined directly — and it is where a prepared candidate is most visibly different from an unprepared one, because a model either is reproduced correctly with its diagram and assumptions or it is not.

1. Economic geography

Measuring development, and the problems of doing so

Income measures — gross domestic product and gross national income per capita — are the conventional starting point and have known defects. They omit non-market activity, including subsistence production and unpaid domestic and care work, which understates output most in the poorest economies. They ignore distribution, so an average conceals whether growth reached anyone. They treat defensive expenditure — cleaning up pollution, treating illness caused by it — as income rather than as cost. They treat resource depletion as income rather than as the running down of an asset, so a country liquidating its forests records growth. And purchasing power parity adjustment is necessary because market exchange rates do not reflect what income buys locally, and it changes country rankings substantially.

Composite measures respond to these. The Human Development Index combines life expectancy, schooling and adjusted income, operationalising Sen's capability approach by shifting the measure from output to what people can do and be. The inequality-adjusted HDI, the Gender Inequality Index and the Multidimensional Poverty Index extend it. Green accounting and adjusted net savings deduct depletion and degradation.

The problems of world economic development should be presented structurally: uneven development between and within countries; commodity dependence and terms-of-trade volatility for primary exporters; debt; technological asymmetry; the policy space constraint, in which current rules restrict instruments earlier developers used; and the middle-income transition difficulty of moving from factor-driven to innovation-driven growth.

World resources and the energy question

Resource classification distinguishes renewable from non-renewable, and — analytically more useful — stock resources, which are fixed in quantity, from flow resources, which are continuously replenished but limited in rate. The critical distinction for policy is between potential resources, known to exist but not currently exploitable, and reserves, exploitable under present technology and prices — which is why reserve estimates rise when prices rise, and why "running out" claims based on reserve-to-production ratios have consistently been wrong in the short run and may still be right in the long one.

Distribution is highly uneven and the unevenness is geological rather than economic, which is why resource endowment and economic development correlate weakly and sometimes negatively — the resource curse, operating through currency appreciation crowding out other tradables, revenue volatility, and the weakening of institutions where rents can be captured without broad taxation.

The energy question. The energy crisis framing derives from the supply shocks of the 1970s and their demonstration that a concentrated supply of a critical input confers leverage. The contemporary framing has shifted from scarcity to transition — the issue being not that fossil fuels will be exhausted but that their use must be constrained. The geographical content is the distribution of conventional reserves, the changed map produced by unconventional extraction, the very different geography of renewable potential — solar in the low latitudes, wind in specific corridors, hydro in mountain regions — and the critical minerals required for the transition, whose distribution is more concentrated than that of oil.

The limits to growth debate is examinable as a contest. The Club of Rome modelling projected that exponential growth in population, industrial output, resource use and pollution against finite limits would produce overshoot and collapse. The critiques: it under-weighted substitution, technological change and price signals that induce both; its resource estimates were reserves rather than resources; and its specific projections were not borne out. The defence: its central claim was about the impossibility of indefinite exponential growth in a finite system, which no critique has refuted, and its identification of pollution and sink capacity rather than resource exhaustion as the binding constraint has been vindicated by the climate problem.

World agriculture

Typology of agricultural regions, following Whittlesey's classification, distinguishes systems by their combination of crops and livestock, intensity, degree of commercialisation, and technology: shifting cultivation; nomadic herding; intensive subsistence with and without paddy dominance; Mediterranean agriculture; commercial grain farming; commercial livestock ranching; mixed crop and livestock; dairy farming; plantation agriculture; and commercial gardening.

Agricultural inputs and productivity. Productivity is measured per unit of land, of labour or of capital, and the three give opposite rankings — intensive subsistence systems have high land productivity and very low labour productivity; extensive commercial grain farming the reverse. Stating which measure is in use is therefore essential, and comparisons that do not are meaningless.

Food and nutrition. The examinable distinction is between undernutrition, insufficient caloric intake; malnutrition, imbalance including micronutrient deficiency; and hidden hunger, micronutrient deficiency without caloric shortfall. The nutrition transition — the shift toward energy-dense diets with rising incomes — produces the coexistence of undernutrition and obesity within the same populations.

Food security, in the standard formulation, has four dimensions: availability of sufficient supply; access, physical and economic; utilisation, requiring health, water, sanitation and dietary knowledge; and stability over time. The four-dimension framework is the answer to almost any food security question, because it locates precisely where a system fails.

Famine. The decisive analytical contribution is Sen's entitlement approach: famines occur not principally because food is unavailable but because groups lose their entitlement to it — through loss of employment, collapse of exchange rates for what they sell, or loss of production. His demonstration that major famines occurred without any substantial fall in aggregate food availability transformed the subject, and the policy implication is that famine prevention requires protecting purchasing power rather than only supply. His further observation — that no substantial famine has occurred in a functioning democracy with a free press — locates the mechanism in accountability and information rather than in agriculture.

Industry and trade

Locational patterns are treated through Weber's framework in Unit 10 and through the empirical observation that the classical location factors — raw material, energy, transport — have declined in importance relative to agglomeration economies, labour skills, market access and institutional environment as transport costs have fallen and as production has shifted toward goods with high value relative to weight.

Problems of world industry: overcapacity in mature sectors; the relocation of production toward lower-cost locations and the regional decline it produces at the origin; environmental externalities; and the fragmentation of production into global value chains, which changes the unit of analysis from the industry to the task and means that a country's participation may be confined to low-value segments.

Patterns of world trade. The examinable content is the structure rather than current flows: the historical pattern of primary exports from periphery to core and manufactures in return; its partial transformation as manufacturing relocated; the rise of intra-industry and intra-firm trade, which classical trade theory based on comparative advantage does not predict; the growth of services and digitally delivered trade; and regional trade concentration within blocs.

2. Population geography

Growth, distribution and attributes

World population distribution is extremely uneven, and its controls are physical — climate, relief, soil, water — and historical and economic, with the latter increasingly dominant. Densely populated regions are the great river valleys and deltas of monsoon Asia, the industrialised regions of Europe and eastern North America, and coastal zones generally; sparsely populated regions are the cold, arid, high and densely forested areas.

Density measures must be distinguished: arithmetic density is population per unit total area and is the crudest; physiological density is population per unit cultivable land and is far more meaningful for agrarian societies; agricultural density is agricultural population per unit cultivable land and measures pressure on the resource base.

Demographic attributes: age and sex structure represented by the population pyramid, whose shape — expansive, constant or constrictive — summarises a population's growth history and its dependency burden; sex ratio; dependency ratio; literacy; work participation; and longevity.

The demographic dividend is the period during which the working-age share is unusually high because fertility has fallen while the previously large birth cohorts are of working age. It is a window rather than an asset, and its realisation depends on whether the working-age population is actually employed productively — which is why the dividend is a deadline rather than a benefit.

Migration

Types: internal and international; voluntary and forced; permanent, temporary, seasonal and circular; rural-urban, rural-rural, urban-urban and urban-rural.

Causes are conventionally organised as push factors at origin — unemployment, low wages, land fragmentation, conflict, disaster, discrimination — and pull factors at destination — employment, higher wages, services, security, and existing networks. Intervening obstacles — distance, cost, legal barriers — and personal factors complete Lee's model.

Ravenstein's laws of migration remain the standard reference and are examined directly: most migrants move short distances; migration proceeds step by step; long-distance migrants go to great centres of commerce and industry; each migration stream produces a counter-stream; urban dwellers migrate less than rural; females predominate in short-distance and males in long-distance moves; and the major causes are economic.

Consequences. At origin: relief of pressure on land, remittance inflow, and — negatively — loss of the young and skilled, with the selective character of migration meaning the origin loses its most economically active members. At destination: labour supply, cultural diversity, and pressure on housing, services and infrastructure. The examinable structural observation is that costs and benefits are geographically separated — remittances flow to origin while servicing costs arise at destination, and no fiscal mechanism connects them, which is why destination cities face a burden they did not create.

Population theories and policy

Malthus argued that population grows geometrically while subsistence grows arithmetically, so population is checked by positive checks — famine, disease, war — or by preventive checks — moral restraint and delayed marriage. Critique: he under-estimated technological change in agriculture, did not anticipate the demographic transition, treated food as the only constraint, and his arithmetic-geometric contrast was an assertion rather than a demonstration. What survives: the general proposition that population growth in a finite environment encounters limits, which reappears in the ecological framing of carrying capacity.

The Marxian critique rejects the framing entirely: poverty and hunger result from the distribution of resources under a particular mode of production, not from population exceeding resources. Under different relations of production, the same resources would support the same population adequately. Population growth is therefore a symptom rather than a cause, and Malthusian analysis serves to blame the poor for their poverty.

Boserup inverts Malthus on causation: population pressure induces agricultural intensification, since scarcity of land raises the return to more intensive methods and to innovation. Her evidence is the historical sequence from long-fallow through short-fallow to annual and multi-cropping, each requiring more labour per unit output and each adopted under population pressure. Population is therefore a driver of agricultural change rather than a passive dependent variable.

The demographic transition model describes the observed sequence: Stage 1, high fluctuating birth and death rates with low natural increase; Stage 2, death rates fall through improved nutrition, sanitation and medicine while birth rates remain high, producing rapid growth; Stage 3, birth rates fall as urbanisation, female education, child survival and the changing economic value of children reduce desired family size, so growth decelerates; Stage 4, low birth and death rates with low growth; and a proposed Stage 5 of below-replacement fertility and natural decrease.

Its value: it is a genuine empirical generalisation that has described a very wide range of countries. Its limitations: it is descriptive rather than explanatory, describing what happened without specifying the mechanism; it is derived from European experience and the timing and pace have differed elsewhere, with the fall in death rates being faster in later transitions because medical technology was imported rather than developed; it does not account for migration; and it assumes a unidirectional sequence.

Over-, under- and optimum population are defined in relation to resources and technology rather than absolutely: optimum population is that which maximises per capita output given resources and technology, so the same numbers may be excessive in one setting and insufficient in another, and the optimum shifts as technology changes.

Population policy ranges from anti-natalist through neutral to pro-natalist, with the examinable finding that fertility responds to the conditions determining desired family size — female education, child survival, old-age security, the economic value of children's labour, and urbanisation — more than to the availability of contraception alone. Coercive approaches have historically produced lasting distrust of the programmes that used them.

Social wellbeing, quality of life and population as social capital

Social wellbeing and quality of life approaches, associated with welfare geography, ask who gets what, where and why, using composite indicators of health, education, housing, security and environment rather than income alone.

Population as social capital reframes population from a burden to a resource: the productive value of a population depends on its health, education, skills and the density of trust and networks that permit cooperation. The framing supports the argument that investment in human capital converts numbers into capability — and its limit is that the conversion requires employment opportunities to exist.

3. Settlement geography

Rural settlements

Types by form: compact or nucleated, where dwellings cluster; dispersed, where they are scattered across holdings; semi-compact; and hamleted, where a settlement comprises several distinct clusters.

The controls on form are the examinable content. Nucleation is favoured by the need for defence, by scarce water requiring a shared source, by cooperative agricultural practices, and by social cohesion including caste or clan organisation. Dispersion is favoured by abundant water, by secure conditions, by individual holdings consolidated rather than fragmented, and by terrain that scatters cultivable land.

Patterns — linear along a road, river or levee; rectangular on a planned grid; circular around a pond or open space; star-shaped at route intersections; T-, Y- and cross-shaped at junctions; and terraced on hill slopes — each reflecting the physical or route feature that organised it.

Environmental issues in rural settlements: water supply and quality, sanitation, solid and liquid waste, indoor air pollution from solid fuels, and the pressure of settlement expansion on cultivable land.

Urban settlements

Hierarchy runs from hamlet and village through town, city, metropolis, conurbation and megalopolis, with each level serving a larger area and offering more specialised functions — which is the empirical observation that central place theory explains.

Functional classification of towns distinguishes administrative, defence, cultural and religious, commercial, industrial, transport, mining, resort and educational towns. Nelson's statistical method classifies by the degree to which employment in a function exceeds the national average, which converts an impressionistic classification into a reproducible one.

Urban morphology is examined through the three classical models, and all three should be given together with their critiques.

Burgess's concentric zone model, from Chicago, proposes zones outward from a central business district: a zone in transition with deteriorating housing and industry, a zone of working-class housing, a residential zone, and a commuter zone. Its mechanism is invasion and succession as the centre expands. Critique: it assumes a single centre, uniform terrain, and a specific historical pattern of immigration and industrial location.

Hoyt's sector model proposes that growth occurs in sectors radiating along transport routes, with high-rent residential areas extending outward along particular corridors rather than forming rings — because once a sector acquires a character it retains it as the city grows. Critique: still assumes a single centre, and under-weights the role of planning and of physical barriers.

Harris and Ullman's multiple nuclei model proposes that cities develop around several nuclei rather than one, because some activities require specialised facilities, some benefit from clustering, some are incompatible with others, and some cannot afford high-rent locations. Critique: it describes rather than predicts, since it does not specify where nuclei will form.

Developing-country urban form departs from all three: the pre-colonial core, the colonial addition, the planned zones and the extensive informal settlements produce a pattern in which high- and low-income areas are frequently adjacent rather than segregated by ring or sector, and in which the periphery is often poorer than the core — inverting the Western pattern.

Primate city and the rank-size rule. The rank-size rule holds that the population of the nth city is approximately the largest city's population divided by n, producing a straight line on log-log axes. A primate distribution occurs where the largest city is disproportionately larger than this predicts. Primacy is associated with small countries, with colonial histories where a single port dominated, with recent independence, and with centralised political systems — and it is a matter of debate whether primacy is inefficient, concentrating congestion and diverting investment, or efficient, concentrating agglomeration economies.

Sphere of urban influence is the area over which a city exerts economic and social dominance, delimited by the breaking point between competing centres, by commuting and service catchments, and by newspaper circulation and similar interaction measures.

The rural-urban fringe is the transition zone of mixed land use at the city edge, characterised by land-use conversion, speculation, uncertain jurisdiction and inadequate service provision — the last because it typically lies outside the municipal boundary while functioning as part of the city.

Satellite towns are planned settlements near a large city intended to absorb growth, and their success depends on whether they acquire independent employment or become dormitory suburbs, which increases commuting rather than reducing pressure.

Problems of urbanisation and their remedies: housing shortage and informal settlement; congestion and transport; water supply and sanitation; solid waste; air and water pollution; and the governance problem that municipal revenue bases grow more slowly than the populations they must service. Sustainable urban development approaches include compact development to reduce transport demand, public transport prioritisation, mixed land use, green and blue infrastructure for drainage and heat, and the recognition that informal settlement is a housing market outcome rather than a migration problem.

4. Regional planning

The concept of a region and its types: a formal or uniform region defined by homogeneity of one or more characteristics; a functional or nodal region defined by interaction around a centre; and a planning region, delimited administratively for the purpose of intervention and therefore requiring a balance between homogeneity, functional coherence and administrative practicability.

Methods of regionalisation include single-factor delimitation, weighted index methods combining several variables, and statistical techniques of grouping. The examinable point is that the criteria determine the regions, so any delimitation question is asking for the criteria first.

Growth poles and growth centres. Perroux's original formulation is economic rather than geographical: a growth pole is a propulsive industry or firm, dominant in size and innovation, whose growth induces growth in linked industries through backward and forward linkages. It exists in abstract economic space.

Boudeville gave the concept its geographical form, identifying the growth pole with an urban centre in which propulsive industries are located, and thereby converting an economic theory into a regional planning strategy — deliberately concentrating investment in selected centres on the expectation that growth would spread to the surrounding region.

The spread-backwash problem is the strategy's central difficulty, and it should be named as such. Myrdal's cumulative causation predicts that growth in a centre produces backwash effects that drain the periphery of capital, labour and enterprise, and that these may exceed the spread effects of increased demand for peripheral products. Hirschman's parallel formulation of polarisation and trickling-down reaches the same structure. The empirical record of growth pole strategies is correspondingly mixed: where spread exceeded backwash, regional convergence occurred; where it did not, the strategy widened the disparity it was meant to close.

Regional imbalance arises from resource endowment, historical investment patterns, infrastructure, agglomeration economies that reinforce existing concentration, and policy. Cumulative causation explains its persistence: initial advantage attracts investment, which raises returns, which attracts further investment.

Regional development strategies range from growth-pole concentration through balanced regional development, which spreads investment more evenly at some cost in efficiency, to infrastructure-led approaches, incentive-based industrial dispersal, and special area programmes for backward, hill, desert and tribal regions. The efficiency-equity trade-off is the strategy question, and it does not have a technical answer.

Environmental issues in regional planning require that the planning region be defined ecologically where the problem is ecological — which is the argument for watershed and eco-region based planning rather than administrative units, since environmental processes do not respect administrative boundaries.

5. Models, theories and laws

This unit is examined directly. Each model must be reproducible with its assumptions, its mechanism, its diagram and its critiques.

Systems analysis treats a geographical entity as a system of elements linked by flows, with inputs, throughputs, outputs and feedback. Isolated systems exchange nothing; closed systems exchange energy but not matter; open systems exchange both, and almost all geographical systems are open. Negative feedback is self-regulating and maintains equilibrium; positive feedback is self-reinforcing and drives change — and identifying which operates in a given case is the analytical payoff, since positive feedback explains runaway change that equilibrium reasoning cannot.

Malthusian, Marxian and demographic transition models are treated above.

Christaller's central place theory explains the size, number and spacing of settlements. Assumptions: an unbounded uniform plain, uniform population and purchasing power distribution, uniform transport in all directions with cost proportional to distance, and rational consumers travelling to the nearest centre offering the good.

Mechanism: every good has a range — the maximum distance a consumer will travel for it — and a threshold — the minimum demand required to sustain its provision. Goods with high thresholds and long ranges are higher order and are offered at fewer, larger centres; low-order goods at many small ones. The resulting service areas are circular, and since circles either leave gaps or overlap, the equilibrium packing is hexagonal.

The three principles: the marketing principle, K=3, minimising the number of centres required to serve the area; the transport principle, K=4, maximising the number of centres lying on connecting routes; and the administrative principle, K=7, in which lower-order centres fall entirely within one higher-order administrative area rather than being shared.

Critiques: the assumptions are never met; the model handles only tertiary activity and ignores manufacturing and administration as location determinants; it is static; consumers engage in multi-purpose trips rather than travelling to the nearest centre for each good; and it fits agricultural plains reasonably and industrial or mountainous regions poorly.

Losch modified it by relaxing the requirement that higher-order centres provide all lower-order functions, superimposing many different hexagonal nets rotated about a common centre, producing city-rich and city-poor sectors — a more realistic and less tractable outcome than Christaller's strict hierarchy.

Von Thunen's model of agricultural location and Weber's model of industrial location are treated in the method chapter's worked examples and in the practice set below.

Rostow's stages of economic growth proposes a sequence: traditional society, with limited technology and ceiling on productivity; preconditions for take-off, with infrastructure, commercial agriculture and an emergent entrepreneurial class; take-off, a short period of rapid growth as investment rises sharply and leading sectors expand; drive to maturity, as growth extends across sectors; and high mass consumption. Critiques: it is unilinear and derived from Western experience; it treats development as internally determined and ignores external constraint, which is the dependency objection; the stages are descriptive rather than causal; and it takes no account of the different international environment facing later developers.

Heartland and Rimland theories. Mackinder's heartland theory holds that the interior of Eurasia — inaccessible to sea power, resource-rich, and centrally positioned — is the pivot of world politics, expressed in the formula that whoever rules East Europe commands the heartland, whoever rules the heartland commands the world island, and whoever rules the world island commands the world. Spykman's rimland theory inverts the emphasis: the coastal fringe of Eurasia, with its population, resources and access to both land and sea, is the decisive zone, and control of the rimland is what determines the fate of the heartland. Critiques of both: they are technologically dated, having been formulated before air power and missiles altered the relationship between distance and vulnerability; they are deterministic; and they were formulated to serve particular strategic positions, which is a criticism of motive rather than of logic but is worth noting.

International boundaries and frontiers. A frontier is a zone of transition, often unsettled and preceding effective state control; a boundary is a line of separation. The historical movement has been from frontiers to boundaries as states extended effective administration.

Boundary classification by origin: antecedent, established before significant settlement; subsequent, drawn after settlement and adjusted to the existing cultural pattern; superimposed, drawn across an existing cultural pattern without regard to it — the characteristic colonial case, and the source of a great many subsequent conflicts; and relict, no longer functioning as a boundary but visible in the landscape.

By form: physical boundaries following rivers, watersheds or mountain crests; geometric boundaries following lines of latitude or longitude; and anthropogeographic boundaries following cultural divisions.

Boundary evolution proceeds through definition in a treaty, delimitation on a map, and demarcation on the ground — and disputes frequently arise because one stage was completed and the next was not, which is a precise and examinable point.

Types of dispute: positional, over where an agreed boundary lies; territorial, over which state should hold an area; resource, over the use of resources crossing the boundary; and functional, over the boundary's operation in movement and trade.

Worked example 5.1 (a full 20-mark answer on a directly examined model). "Examine Christaller's central place theory and assess its applicability. (20 marks)"

Model answer. Central place theory explains the size, number and spacing of settlements offering services — the first theoretical account in geography of why settlements occur where they do in the numbers they do.

Assumptions, stated first because the critiques attack them: an unbounded uniform plain of equal fertility and no relief; uniform distribution of population and purchasing power; uniform transport in all directions with cost proportional to distance; rational consumers minimising travel and visiting the nearest centre offering the good sought; profit-maximising suppliers; and perfect information.

The mechanism. Two concepts do all the work. The range of a good is the maximum distance a consumer will travel to obtain it, beyond which the journey cost exceeds the benefit. The threshold is the minimum demand — and therefore the minimum population within the range — required to sustain its provision. High-value, infrequently purchased goods have long ranges and high thresholds; low-value frequently purchased goods the reverse.

It follows that high-order goods can be supplied only from a few large centres, since only they command sufficient population within the range, while low-order goods are supplied from many small centres. A settlement hierarchy therefore emerges in which higher-order centres provide all the functions of lower-order ones plus additional higher-order functions, and in which higher-order centres are fewer, larger and more widely spaced.

Service areas would be circular, since range is a distance. But circles packed together either overlap or leave gaps, both of which are inconsistent with equilibrium — overlap implies duplicated provision and gaps imply unserved consumers who could profitably be served. The only shape that packs without gaps and is closest to circular is the hexagon, which is why the model's characteristic geometry follows from the logic rather than being assumed.

The three organising principles, each producing a different arrangement.

The marketing principle (K=3) minimises the number of centres needed to supply the whole area. Each higher-order centre serves itself plus a third of each of the six surrounding lower-order centres, giving a nesting factor of three.

The transport principle (K=4) maximises the number of centres lying on straight routes between higher-order centres, minimising route length. Lower-order centres sit at the midpoints of hexagon edges rather than at corners.

The administrative principle (K=7) requires that lower-order centres fall entirely within a single higher-order centre's area rather than being shared between competing ones, since divided administrative jurisdiction is unworkable. Each higher-order centre therefore controls six complete lower-order centres plus itself.

The critiques.

The assumptions are never met: no uniform plain exists, population and purchasing power are unevenly distributed, transport is along networks rather than uniform in all directions, and terrain and resources produce concentration.

It handles only tertiary activity. Settlements exist for reasons the model excludes — manufacturing located by raw material or labour, mining located by geology, ports located by harbour, administration located by history. In an industrial region the settlement pattern is determined by these and central place logic is secondary.

Consumer behaviour is misdescribed. Consumers make multi-purpose trips, obtaining low-order goods while visiting a higher-order centre for a high-order good, which undermines the assumption that each good is sought at the nearest supplying centre and biases the system toward larger centres.

It is static, describing an equilibrium without explaining how settlement systems change — under transport improvement, rising mobility or the growth of remote provision.

Losch's modification relaxes the requirement that higher-order centres provide all lower-order functions, superimposing many hexagonal nets rotated about a common centre. The result is city-rich and city-poor sectors rather than a strict hierarchy, which is more realistic and considerably less tractable — the standard trade-off between realism and usability.

Applicability.

The theory works best in agricultural plains with dispersed population and comparable resource endowment — flat, agriculturally uniform regions with settlement patterns determined principally by service provision — and empirical work in such regions has found hierarchies and spacings broadly consistent with it.

It works poorly in industrial regions, mountainous terrain, coastal zones where settlement is linear, and any region whose settlement pattern was determined historically by administration or defence rather than by markets.

In the Indian context its applicability is partial and instructive. The hierarchy is real — the sequence from periodic market through market town to district and regional centre corresponds to threshold and range logic, and periodic markets are themselves an elegant confirmation, since a periodic market allows a trader to aggregate demand across several locations to reach a threshold that no single location supplies. But the pattern is distorted by transport corridors, by the administrative hierarchy which is historical rather than market-determined, by regional variation in density, and by the primacy of major metropolitan centres.

Assessment. The model's value is analytical rather than predictive: it isolates the effect of market provision on settlement pattern and shows what that factor alone would produce, so that observed departures identify which other factors are operating. Criticising it for unrealistic assumptions mistakes what an abstract model is for. Its enduring contributions are the concepts of range and threshold, which are used far beyond the theory — in retail location, service planning and the delimitation of catchments — and the demonstration that settlement patterns can be theorised at all, which is what made human geography a theoretical discipline.

Land, labour and capital productivity give opposite rankings — intensive subsistence has high land and very low labour productivity, extensive commercial grain farming the reverse. A comparison that does not specify is meaningless.

All of the ones named in Unit 10, without exception, because they are examined directly and a model question expects the diagram. The essential set: Christaller's hexagons in all three K arrangements, ideally as three panels; Von Thunen's rings together with the rent gradient graph that generates them, the graph being more important because it shows the mechanism; Weber's locational triangle with isodapanes and the critical isodapane marked; the three urban morphology models as a single three-panel figure; the demographic transition curve with birth rate, death rate and natural increase; the rank-size relationship on log-log axes with a primate distribution shown for contrast; Rostow's stages as a stepped sequence; and Heartland and Rimland on a world outline. Each should take about ninety seconds with full labelling, which means roughly a fortnight of practice to make them automatic. The reason this matters more here than in other units is that these models are visual objects — Christaller's argument is that hexagons follow from range and threshold, and prose describing hexagons is a poor substitute for drawing them.

By explaining what an abstract model is for, which is itself a mark-earning observation. A model isolates one variable and demonstrates what that variable alone would produce, so that observed departures from the prediction identify precisely which other factors are operating and how strongly. Von Thunen's uniform plain does not exist, and its non-existence is the point: because the model says what transport cost alone would produce, an actual pattern that differs tells you that soil, policy or refrigeration is doing the work. Criticising a model for unrealistic assumptions therefore mistakes its purpose, and an answer that says so demonstrates methodological understanding rather than merely reproducing critiques. The structure that follows: state the assumptions, derive the prediction, show where reality departs, and explain the departure by naming the factor the model excluded. That converts the critique section from a list of objections into an analysis — and it is what distinguishes a strong model answer from a competent one.

Most of it, and building the bridge deliberately is among the highest-return preparation moves in the optional. Economic geography supplies the framework for Paper II's resources, agriculture, industry and trade units — the material index explains Indian industrial location, Whittlesey's typology frames Indian agricultural regions, and the productivity-measure distinction is essential for any Indian agriculture question. Population geography supplies the demographic attributes, migration and policy content that Paper II examines in the Indian context, and the geographical separation of migration's costs and benefits is directly applicable. Settlement geography supplies the rural settlement typology, the urban hierarchy, morphology and functional classification that Paper II asks for Indian cities — with the developing-country departure from the Western models being exactly what an Indian urban morphology answer needs. Regional planning supplies the whole apparatus for Paper II's planning unit, including growth poles, spread and backwash, and regionalisation criteria. The practical drill is one line per Paper II topic naming the Paper I concept it applies; an afternoon's work that makes Paper II analytical rather than descriptive.
