UPSC CSEOptional — Geography

Optional — Geography for UPSC CSE

Principles of Geography in Paper I, Geography of India in Paper II — the one optional where diagrams and map work are examined content, not decoration.

📊 500 marks · a finite, revisable syllabus with a large mechanically scored component
How toppers play this section
Geography is scored on process, spatial specificity and the visual. Physical geography answers must trace the mechanism with its controlling variables rather than naming the outcome; human geography answers must give a model's assumptions before its mechanism, since the critiques attack the assumptions. Paper II's map question is worth a full long answer, is scored almost mechanically, and is forfeited every year by candidates who prepare everything else — so start blank-outline practice in the first month and build the map by category as you cover each unit. Drill about twenty core diagrams to ninety seconds each with full labelling, and draw before writing the paragraph rather than after.
