Indian Geography & Natural Resources — UPSC GS Paper I
Weightage: 4–5 questions — Geography's highest-yield chapter, since Indian river systems and resource distribution combine dense static facts with strong current-affairs linkage (dam projects, interstate water disputes, mining policy).
1. Physiographic divisions of India
India is divided into six broad physiographic regions:
- The Himalayan Mountains — young, fold mountains (still rising, per the previous chapter's plate tectonics), running roughly northwest-southeast, divided into three parallel ranges: Himadri/Greater Himalayas (highest, permanently snow-covered, contains the highest peaks); Himachal/Lesser Himalayas (hill stations, e.g., Shimla, Darjeeling); Shiwaliks/Outer Himalayas (lowest, southernmost range, composed of unconsolidated sediment).
- The Northern Plains — formed by the alluvial deposits of the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra river systems; among the most fertile and densely populated regions in the world; further divided into the Bhabar, Terai, Bhangar (older alluvium), and Khadar (newer alluvium) sub-zones.
- The Peninsular Plateau — India's oldest and most geologically stable landmass (part of the ancient Gondwana continental fragment), comprising the Malwa Plateau, Deccan Plateau (formed by volcanic/basaltic lava flows, giving rise to fertile black "regur" soil), and the Chota Nagpur Plateau (rich in mineral deposits).
- The Indian Desert (Thar Desert) — located in Rajasthan, an arid region east of the Aravalli Range.
- The Coastal Plains — the Western Coastal Plain (narrow, between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, includes the Konkan and Malabar coasts) and the Eastern Coastal Plain (wider, between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, includes the Coromandel and Northern Circars coasts; wider because major rivers here form extensive deltas).
- The Islands — Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Bay of Bengal, of tectonic/volcanic origin, includes India's only active volcano at Barren Island) and Lakshadweep Islands (Arabian Sea, coral origin — atolls).
2. Major mountain ranges (beyond the Himalayas)
- Western Ghats (also called the Sahyadri) — run along India's west coast, largely continuous, significantly influence southwest monsoon rainfall via the orographic effect (see previous chapter); a recognised UNESCO World Heritage biodiversity hotspot.
- Eastern Ghats — run along the east coast, discontinuous (broken by major rivers forming deltas), generally lower in elevation than the Western Ghats.
- Aravalli Range — one of the world's OLDEST fold mountain ranges (highly eroded over geological time), running through Rajasthan; highest peak Guru Shikhar (Mount Abu).
- Vindhya and Satpura Ranges — form a symbolic and partial physical divide between North and Peninsular India; the Narmada River flows in the rift valley between them.
3. Major river systems
Himalayan rivers (perennial — fed by both monsoon rain AND melting snow/glaciers, so they flow year-round):

Note the Narmada/Tapi exception: because most Peninsular rivers flow EASTWARD into the Bay of Bengal (following the general east-tilting slope of the Peninsular Plateau) and form deltas at their mouths, the Narmada and Tapi are frequently tested exceptions — they flow WESTWARD into the Arabian Sea through rift valleys, forming estuaries (drowned river mouths) rather than deltas.
4. Indian climate and soil types
Köppen climate classification broadly divides India into multiple zones, but for Prelims purposes the key working framework is the monsoon-driven climate system (covered mechanistically in the previous chapter) producing regional variation: tropical wet (high rainfall, Western Ghats/Northeast), tropical dry (low rainfall, Rajasthan/interior Deccan), and montane (Himalayan altitude-driven variation).

5. Mineral and resource distribution
Coal: India has substantial reserves, concentrated chiefly in the Chota Nagpur Plateau region — Jharkhand (Jharia, Bokaro), West Bengal (Raniganj), Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh.
Iron ore: major deposits in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka (particularly the Bellary-Hospet region).
Petroleum/natural gas: major producing regions include Mumbai High (offshore Maharashtra), Assam (India's oldest oil-producing region), Gujarat, and the Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin offshore Andhra Pradesh.
Bauxite (aluminium ore): concentrated in Odisha (largest reserves), followed by Gujarat, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh.
Mica: Jharkhand (particularly the Koderma region, a historically dominant global mica source), Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan.
Common traps UPSC sets here
- The Narmada and Tapi are the frequently tested EXCEPTIONS that flow WESTWARD — most Peninsular rivers flow eastward into the Bay of Bengal; don't assume all Peninsular rivers share the same eastward flow direction.
- Estuary (Narmada, Tapi mouths) vs. delta (most other major river mouths, including the Ganga-Brahmaputra Sundarbans, the world's largest delta) is a frequently tested distinction — an estuary is a drowned river mouth where the river meets the sea without depositing a fan-shaped sediment plain; a delta is a sediment-built landform at the river's mouth.
- Himalayan rivers are PERENNIAL (snow+glacier fed); Peninsular rivers are largely SEASONAL/rain-fed — this explains why Himalayan rivers support more extensive irrigation and hydropower infrastructure, and why Peninsular rivers show much greater seasonal flow variation.
- The Indus Waters Treaty (1960) allocates the THREE EASTERN rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) to India and the THREE WESTERN rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) predominantly to Pakistan — a commonly reversed pairing; remember "Eastern rivers, East reaches India" as the directional logic.
- Black/Regur soil is ideal for COTTON, not rice or wheat — a frequently tested crop-soil pairing; alluvial soil, not black soil, is the primary soil for most food-grain cultivation.
- The Aravalli Range is among the WORLD'S OLDEST fold mountains (heavily eroded), NOT a young range like the Himalayas — don't apply "still rising" logic (correct for the Himalayas) to the geologically ancient, stable Aravallis.
- Laterite soil forms under HEAVY rainfall/leaching conditions, and is generally POOR for most cultivation despite the region's high rainfall — a counter-intuitive pairing (high rainfall region, but poor natural soil fertility) that UPSC tests directly.

Exam protocol
- For any river question, first classify it as Himalayan (perennial, snow-fed) or Peninsular (seasonal, rain-fed) — this single classification resolves most flow-pattern and irrigation-relevance questions.
- Treat the Narmada/Tapi westward-flow exception as an automatic flag whenever a question describes a Peninsular river flowing into the Arabian Sea — these two rivers are almost certainly the answer.
- For soil questions, pair the soil type directly with its signature crop (Black-Cotton, Alluvial-most food grains) rather than trying to recall abstract fertility descriptions.
- For mineral questions, anchor on the Chota Nagpur Plateau region (Jharkhand/Odisha/Chhattisgarh/West Bengal) as India's dominant mineral belt for coal, iron ore, and bauxite — most mineral-location questions can be narrowed to this region first before identifying the specific state.
- Remember the Indus Waters Treaty's exact river allocation, since it is both a static Polity/Geography-crossover fact and a recurring current-affairs topic given ongoing India-Pakistan water-sharing discussions.
