A question that asks why a particular region experiences unusually low rainfall despite being near a coastline is not really testing whether you've memorised that region's rainfall statistics — it's testing whether you understand the rain shadow effect, where a mountain range blocks moisture-laden winds, causing high rainfall on the windward side and a dry 'shadow' on the leeward side.
