Language Acquisition Principles (Second-Language Context)
This chapter closes out Language II, still modeled as Hindi paired with English as Language I — the most common real-world combination for English-medium CTET candidates. The theories covered here (innatism, behaviourism, constructivism, the critical period hypothesis, interference and code-switching) are general second-language-acquisition principles; applying them to a Hindi-as-Language-II classroom is simply the worked example, and the same theory applies whichever of CTET's roughly twenty language options a candidate is certified in.
1. What this sub-topic actually asks
Language Acquisition Principles carries weightPct: 20 of Language II — roughly 6 of the 30 questions, the lightest of the subject's three sub-topics by count. It is nonetheless the most conceptually load-bearing: the constructivist, anti-rote-grammar stance developed here is the same stance that decides several "how would you teach this" questions in Chapter 1 (the pedagogical layer) and Chapter 2 (assessment and remediation). Five themes recur:
- Theories of language acquisition — behaviourist, innatist, and constructivist/interactionist views.
- Krashen's specific second-language-acquisition model — comprehensible input, the acquisition-learning distinction, and the affective filter.
- The natural order of skill development — listening and speaking before reading and writing.
- The critical period hypothesis, and how it differs for first- versus second-language acquisition.
- L1 interference, interlanguage, and code-switching — and CTET's well-known critical stance on isolated grammar teaching.
2. Three theories of language acquisition
Skinner's behaviourist view (from Verbal Behavior, 1957) treats language as a learned behaviour, built through stimulus, response, imitation, and reinforcement — a child says a word, is praised or corrected, and repetition strengthens the correct form. It implies a classroom built on drilling, repetition, and immediate correction. Its well-known weakness, raised by Chomsky, is that it cannot explain how children (or L2 learners) routinely produce and understand entirely novel sentences they have never heard reinforced — imitation alone doesn't account for genuinely new, grammatical output.
Chomsky's innatist view proposes a Language Acquisition Device (LAD) — an innate, biological capacity for grammar, underlying a Universal Grammar shared across human languages. Chomsky's central evidence is the "poverty of stimulus" argument: children are exposed to limited, often imperfect language input, yet reliably acquire complex grammatical competence far beyond what direct instruction or imitation could explain — implying an innate template the child's mind applies to whatever language it is exposed to. Its main limitation is that it underplays the social and interactive dimension of real acquisition.
The constructivist/interactionist view — associated with Vygotsky's social-constructivism and blended with Krashen's specifically second-language-focused model (Section 3) — holds that language develops through meaningful social interaction, scaffolded by more competent speakers within the learner's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD): the gap between what a learner can do alone and what they can do with guided support. This is CTET's favoured perspective, and it is stated explicitly in NCF 2005's language-teaching philosophy: language is best learned through meaningful use and interaction, not through isolated drilling or purely innate unfolding disconnected from a social context. Whenever a CTET question asks which theoretical stance underlies "good" Hindi teaching, the constructivist/interactionist answer is reliably the key.

3. Krashen's input hypothesis and the classroom
Stephen Krashen's model, built specifically for second-language acquisition, contributes three ideas CTET tests directly:
- Comprehensible input (the "i+1" idea) — learners acquire language most effectively from input just slightly beyond their current level, understood through context, gesture, and simplification rather than through explicit grammar explanation. A Hindi lesson pitched entirely above or entirely below a student's current level does less for acquisition than one calibrated just beyond it.
- The acquisition-learning distinction — "acquisition" is the subconscious process of absorbing a language through meaningful communication (much like a first language); "learning" is the conscious, explicit study of rules. Krashen argues acquisition, not conscious learning, drives real communicative fluency — a student who can recite a grammar rule perfectly may still be unable to use it fluently in conversation, and vice versa.
- The affective filter hypothesis — anxiety, low motivation, or low self-confidence raise a mental "filter" that blocks language input from being processed for acquisition, even when the input itself is otherwise comprehensible. This is the theoretical basis for the low-anxiety, mistake-tolerant classroom environment favoured throughout this subject (see Chapter 2, Section 2).
Related to academic language demand specifically, Jim Cummins' distinction between BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills — everyday conversational fluency, typically developing within one to two years) and CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency — the more abstract, decontextualised language needed for academic subject content, typically taking several years longer to develop) is relevant background for a Class VI-VIII Hindi classroom: a student who converses fluently in Hindi (strong BICS) may still need considerable support with the more formal, academic register a Hindi textbook or exam demands (CALP) — the two are not the same skill and don't develop on the same timeline.
4. Listening and speaking before reading and writing
The natural order in first-language acquisition — listening, then speaking, then (much later, and only with formal instruction) reading and writing — reflects the fact that oral language is universal and unfolds without teaching, while literacy is a taught, later-developing skill layered on top of an already-functioning oral system.
For second-language acquisition specifically, the picture is more nuanced: an L2 learner already has full oral competence in some language, so the "silent period" and listening-first stage look different from an infant's first exposure to language. Still, the underlying rationale — that building oral comprehension and production strengthens the literacy skills built on top of them — remains a testable, applicable principle, especially in the early stages of learning Hindi as an additional language. By Class VI-VIII, CTET's practical emphasis shifts more toward integrating all four skills together (Chapter 2, Section 3) than toward a strict, sequential silent period, but the foundational claim — oral competence supports and should generally accompany or precede intensive literacy work on the same content — remains a principle CTET expects a candidate to recognise and apply.
5. The critical period hypothesis — L1 vs L2
Eric Lenneberg's Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH), originally proposed for first-language acquisition, argues there is a biologically limited window — roughly up to puberty, linked to brain lateralization — after which native-like language acquisition becomes significantly harder. Applied to second-language acquisition specifically, the evidence is considerably more mixed and the "critical period" argument is softer and more contested than for L1:
- Adults and older learners can and do achieve high, even near-native, proficiency in a second language — the CPH does not support pessimism about older learners' overall L2 outcomes.
- Where age effects are most consistently observed is specifically in native-like accent/phonology — very early L2 exposure tends to produce more native-sounding pronunciation than later exposure — rather than in vocabulary, grammar, or comprehension, where older learners often progress faster than young children precisely because they bring more developed general cognitive and learning strategies to the task.
The exam-relevant implication: starting Hindi (as Language II) instruction early in primary school offers real phonological/accent advantages, but a Class VI-VIII student is not "too late" to make excellent progress in Hindi comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar. A question asking whether older learners are fundamentally disadvantaged in second-language classrooms should be answered with this more nuanced, evidence-based "no, not across the board" position rather than a blanket "yes, younger is always better" one.
6. L1 interference, interlanguage, and code-switching
Three related concepts describe what happens when a learner's existing language(s) interact with a new one being acquired — genuinely central in a Hindi-as-Language-II classroom where a student's actual first language may be a third, regional language distinct from both English (the medium of instruction/Language I) and Hindi (the language being learned).
- Interference/transfer — a learner's L1 patterns shaping L2 production. Positive transfer occurs when a similar L1 structure helps (a cognate word, a similar sentence order); negative transfer occurs when a differing L1 structure produces a systematic error — for example, a student whose L1 doesn't mark grammatical gender on verbs may consistently produce Hindi sentences with incorrect gender agreement (लड़की अच्छा है instead of लड़की अच्छी है), because Hindi verbs and adjectives agree in gender with the subject, a feature their L1 has no equivalent rule for.
- Interlanguage (Larry Selinker) — the learner's own evolving, internally systematic language system at any given point — neither their L1 nor a "broken" version of the target language, but a genuine, rule-governed stage in its own right. This reframes what looks like a random mistake as evidence of active, in-progress rule-formation: a consistent gender-agreement error, for instance, shows the learner is testing (and has not yet corrected) a specific hypothesis about Hindi grammar, not simply being careless.
- Code-switching and code-mixing — code-switching is alternating between languages at sentence or clause boundaries (often for social/communicative effect); code-mixing blends elements of two languages within a single utterance. Both are normal features of bilingual and multilingual competence. In a classroom where a student's true L1 is a third regional language, all three systems (L1, Hindi, English) may be drawn on simultaneously. CTET's stance — consistent with Chapter 2's treatment of code-mixing — is non-punitive and resource-based: code-switching is treated as a communicative and scaffolding strategy, not a deficiency to be eliminated.
7. CTET's critical perspective on grammar
This is the single most reliably tested strategic stance in the entire Language II subject. NCF 2005 explicitly critiques the traditional grammar-translation method — teaching isolated grammar rules through decontextualised drills and rote translation exercises — as ineffective for building genuine communicative competence. In its place, CTET/NCF favours implicit, contextual, communicative grammar teaching: grammatical structures are absorbed through meaningful use — stories, conversations, functional classroom tasks — with any explicit rule-naming (if it happens at all) coming after meaningful exposure, never as a substitute for it.
This connects directly to error treatment. Corder's classic distinction separates:
- Errors — systematic, reflecting a genuine (if incorrect) rule the learner has internalised at their current interlanguage stage (e.g., a consistent gender-agreement mistake); the learner typically cannot self-correct these even when pointed out, because the underlying rule itself is still developing.
- Mistakes — one-off performance slips a learner can usually self-correct immediately once pointed out, unrelated to their underlying competence.
CTET's pedagogy explicitly does not reward immediate, exhaustive correction of every error during communicative activities (which raises the affective filter, Section 3, and can shut down a learner's willingness to communicate). Selective, contextual correction — prioritising communication and confidence first, with targeted grammar support layered in separately — is consistently the answer key's preferred stance. On any question phrased as "which of the following best reflects CTET's view of grammar teaching," the communicative/contextual/error-tolerant option is very reliably the correct one, over an isolated-drilling/immediate-correction option that may look more rigorous on the surface.
8. Solved scenario examples
Q1. A Class VII student, new to Hindi as Language II, consistently makes gender-agreement errors ("लड़की अच्छा है" instead of "लड़की अच्छी है"). How is this pattern best described? Solution. As evidence of interlanguage — a systematic, rule-governed developmental stage, not random carelessness. The consistent pattern shows the student is actively (if incorrectly) applying a hypothesis about Hindi's gender-agreement rule, exactly what Selinker's interlanguage concept describes.
Q2. Which theory best explains why a learner can produce and understand an entirely novel sentence never directly modeled or reinforced for them? Solution. Chomsky's innatist view. The "poverty of stimulus" argument specifically addresses how learners generate and understand novel, grammatical sentences beyond what direct instruction or imitation alone (Skinner's behaviourism) could explain, implying an innate grammatical competence.
Q3. During a spoken storytelling activity, a teacher chooses not to correct every small grammar slip, focusing instead on whether the story communicates clearly. Which principle does this reflect? Solution. Krashen's affective filter hypothesis, combined with CTET's critical perspective on grammar. Over-correction raises anxiety and can shut down willingness to communicate; prioritising meaning and communication over perfect form at this stage is the low-affective-filter, constructivist approach CTET favours.
Q4. A Class VI student whose home language is Marwari frequently switches to Marwari words when she doesn't know the Hindi term during class discussion. What is the recommended teacher response? Solution. Treat this as code-switching used as a natural communicative and scaffolding strategy, not a discipline problem — acknowledge the meaning she has conveyed, then supply or model the Hindi equivalent to expand her Hindi vocabulary, consistent with the non-punitive treatment of code-switching in this chapter and the additive-multilingualism stance from Chapter 2.
9. Common traps
- Treating Skinner's behaviourism as CTET's favoured theory — it is explicitly not; CTET/NCF 2005 favours the constructivist/interactionist view.
- Assuming the critical period hypothesis means older learners cannot achieve strong L2 proficiency — the evidence doesn't support this pessimistic reading, especially for vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension (as opposed to native-like accent specifically).
- Confusing code-switching/code-mixing with "errors" needing correction, rather than recognising them as natural bilingual competence.
- Conflating "interlanguage" with simple carelessness rather than a systematic, rule-governed developmental stage.
- Assuming CTET favours immediate, exhaustive grammar correction — it favours selective, contextual, communication-first correction instead.
- Mixing up Chomsky's and Skinner's theories under time pressure — both are commonly tested by name-matching, and their positions are near-opposites.
- Treating listening/speaking-before-reading/writing as a rigid rule for every Class VI-VIII lesson — it is a general developmental rationale most clearly applicable to early acquisition stages, not a strict sequencing mandate at every grade level.
10. Exam strategy
- Memorise the theory-to-theorist mapping cold: Skinner = behaviourist/imitation-reinforcement; Chomsky = innatist/LAD/Universal Grammar/poverty of stimulus; Vygotsky = social-constructivist/ZPD/scaffolding; Krashen = input hypothesis/affective filter/acquisition-learning distinction; Selinker = interlanguage; Corder = error vs mistake; Lenneberg = critical period hypothesis; Cummins = BICS vs CALP.
- On "which view does CTET/NCF 2005 favour" questions, the constructivist/communicative option is reliably the key.
- On grammar-teaching questions specifically, favour contextual/implicit/communicative options over isolated-drill/translation options — this is the single most consistently tested stance in the subject.
- On code-switching or "error" questions, favour the non-punitive, scaffolding-oriented option.
- With zero negative marking across the CTET paper, apply the same eliminate-and-guess discipline used in Chapters 1 and 2 to any theory-identification question you're unsure of — matching a described classroom behaviour to its correct theorist by process of elimination is usually enough to narrow four options down to two.
