Roughly 80–85% of NEET Biology is direct NCERT. The single most effective thing you can do is read NCERT line by line — including examples, exceptions, tables and the captions under every diagram.


2. The NCERT-line method

Biology is not read like a story; it is mined for testable lines. For every chapter:

  1. Read every line — NEET lifts statements verbatim, including "for example…" clauses and bracketed asides.
  2. Learn the tables — comparisons (mitosis vs meiosis, DNA vs RNA, C₃ vs C₄) are direct question fodder.
  3. Study the diagrams and their labels — the parts of a nephron, the human heart, a flower — and the caption, which often carries a fact not in the body text.
  4. Note the exceptions — "except…", "unlike…", "only…" phrases are prime NEET material.
  5. Revise by recall, not re-reading — close the book and list the steps of a process.

3. Terminology is the vocabulary of the exam

Biology is a language before it is a science. Marks are lost to confused terms, not deep concepts.

  • Keep a running glossary of paired terms that are easily swapped: afferent/efferent, systole/diastole, autotroph/heterotroph, xylem/phloem, mitosis/meiosis, dominant/recessive.
  • Learn scientific names and classifications precisely (spelling and category both count).
  • Master the processes as ordered sequences — glycolysis, the cardiac cycle, the menstrual cycle — because NEET asks "which step comes next" or "where does X occur".

4. Marking strategy: accuracy is everything

With −1 for a wrong answer and 90 questions, Biology rewards disciplined accuracy.

  • Most questions you either know or don't — answer the knowns fast and bank them; they are the core of your rank.
  • Beware assertion–reason and "which of the following is correct/incorrect" formats — read every option; NEET hides one subtle error.
  • If genuinely unsure and you cannot eliminate options, skip rather than donate a mark.
  • Because Biology is fast (little calculation), give it a generous slice of time — roughly 50–60 minutes — and use its momentum to steady the rest of the paper.

5. Botany and Zoology: one section, two halves

  • Botany — plant diversity, morphology, anatomy, plant physiology (photosynthesis, respiration, transport), genetics, ecology, cell biology.
  • Zoology — animal diversity, structural organisation, human physiology, reproduction, evolution, biotechnology, human health.
  • Human physiology and genetics span both and together are the largest, most reliably tested part of the paper — prioritise them.

For Biology, NCERT is very nearly sufficient — far more so than for Physics or Chemistry. The overwhelming majority of questions are drawn straight from the NCERT Class 11 and 12 text, including its examples, tables and diagram captions. The right approach is to master NCERT line by line first, then use previous-year papers and a good question bank to practise application and spot the exact lines NEET tends to quote. Extra reference books add little and can dilute your focus.

Human Physiology and Genetics & Molecular Biology together form the largest and most reliably tested part of the paper, so they come first. Ecology, Reproduction, Cell Biology and Plant Physiology are also high-yield. Because these blocks recur every year with many questions, mastering them secures the bulk of your Biology marks; diversity and morphology chapters then round out the total.
