Why this chapter matters in IBPS PO
Puzzles and seating arrangement are 40–55% of the entire reasoning section in both IBPS PO Prelims and Mains — no other single topic comes close. Because they arrive as 4–5 questions on one arrangement, a solved set is the best marks-per-minute in the whole exam (5 marks in ~4 minutes) and an unsolved one is the worst (0 marks and 6 minutes gone). You literally cannot clear the reasoning sectional cut-off without owning this chapter, and there is nothing to memorise — just one method applied to six frames.

Puzzles & Seating Arrangement — IBPS PO Reasoning

You do not "clear" the IBPS reasoning cut-off by getting syllogisms right. You clear it by owning puzzles. In a 35-question Prelims section, 15–20 marks are puzzle/seating sets; in the 40-question Mains section it is 15–22. This is not a topic — it is the topic. The good news: unlike GK there is nothing to memorise. There are six frames and one method, and the method is the same every time — build the grid, place the certainties, and let the floaters settle.


1. What IBPS actually asks

Puzzles always arrive as a set of 4–5 questions on one arrangement. You spend 3–4 minutes cracking the arrangement, then bank all 5 marks in seconds. That "all-or-nothing" shape is exactly why they decide the section: a solved set is 5 marks in 4 minutes (the best rate in the paper); a half-solved one is 0 marks and a wasted 6 minutes.

The six frames IBPS rotates through:

  1. Linear — a single or double row, people facing north/south.
  2. Circular / rectangular / square — people facing the centre or outward.
  3. Floor / building — 7–8 floors, one person per floor (a vertical line, really).
  4. Box / stack / shelf — boxes stacked, or items on numbered shelves.
  5. Scheduling — people mapped to days of a week, months of a year, or dates.
  6. Comparison — heights/ages/salaries ranked, often with "more/less than" clues.

Mains layers a variable on top (each person also has an age, a city, a colour — a "double line-up") and mixes in blood-relation or coded-direction twists. Same six frames, one extra column.


2. The universal method (this is the whole chapter)

Every puzzle, without exception:

  1. Draw the empty frame first. A line of 8 blanks, a circle with 8 seats, a ladder of 7 floors. Seeing the frame stops you from holding positions in your head.
  2. Split the clues into two piles. Definite clues fix a position or an exact gap ("R sits at the extreme left", "exactly two sit between M and N"). Floating clues give a relationship without an anchor ("P sits somewhere left of Q"). Place every definite clue first. Floaters resolve once the frame fills.
  3. Track "no final position" candidates. When a clue could sit two ways, draw both cases (Case 1 / Case 2) and carry them forward. Later clues kill the wrong case — do not guess which; let a contradiction do it.
  4. Nail the direction rule before you read "left/right". Facing north, the person's left is your left. Facing south, their left is your right — everything mirrors. In a circle facing the centre, left = clockwise's opposite; facing outward, it flips. Getting this wrong is the #1 reason a correct grid gives a wrong answer.
  5. Read the questions before you finalise. Often only one arrangement is needed and one case is already enough to answer 4 of the 5.

The skill being tested is bookkeeping under pressure, not cleverness. The candidate who draws two clean cases beats the one who "sees it" and holds it in their head — every single time.


3. Linear seating

Single row. N people, all facing the same way (usually north). "Left/right" is from their perspective. Anchor the extremes ("A is 3rd from the left end") because end-references are the most definite clues you get.

Double row (parallel rows). Row 1 faces south, Row 2 faces north, and they sit facing each other — so seat 1 of Row 1 is opposite seat 1 of Row 2. The trap: "A faces B" links the two rows; "A is to the left of C" stays within a row and must respect that row's facing direction. Keep the two rows' left/right straight — they are mirror images.

Gap language, decoded:

  • "Two persons sit between M and N" → exactly 2 (M _ _ N or N _ _ M).
  • "M sits third to the left of N" → count 3 seats leftward from N to land on M.
  • "Immediate / adjacent" → next seat, no gap.
  • "As many between A and B as between B and C" → a symmetry clue; test it after the frame is half-built.

4. Circular, rectangular & square

Seats arranged around a table. First fix the facing rule:

  • Facing the centre: a person's left hand points clockwise, right hand anticlockwise.
  • Facing outward (away from centre): it flips — left points anticlockwise.
  • Mixed facing (some in, some out) is IBPS's favourite Mains twist. Mark each person's facing with an arrow before applying any left/right clue.

Rectangular/square tables seat people on sides (and sometimes corners). "Sits at a corner" vs "sits in the middle of a side" changes who is adjacent to whom. In a square with people on all four sides facing centre, the person on the north side and the person on the south side face opposite ways — re-check left/right for each.

Anchor trick: in a circle, "second to the left of X" is unambiguous only once X's facing is fixed. Place the person with the most clues attached to them first; they become your reference point.


5. Floor, box & scheduling puzzles — same grid, rotated

Floor puzzles are a vertical linear row. Convention: floor 1 = bottom, floor N = top. "Above/below" replaces "left/right", and there is no facing direction — that makes them the easiest frame, so attempt them first. Watch: "gap of two floors between A and B" means 3 floors apart (A on 2, B on 5).

Box / stack puzzles work identically — "Box P is kept immediately above Box Q", "three boxes between the topmost and P". Number the positions 1..N and treat it as a floor puzzle.

Scheduling puzzles map people to days (Mon–Sun), months (Jan–Dec) or dates. Write the fixed timeline first (all 7 days in a column), then place people. "A's exam is before B's, and C's is not on Monday" are ordering + elimination clues — the same definite/floating split applies. For month + date combos (e.g., 10th or 25th of four months), build a 2-column grid (month × date).


6. Comparison & double line-up (Mains)

Comparison puzzles rank a quantity — heights, ages, salaries, marks. Convert every clue to inequalities on one line: "A > B", "C < D", "E is taller than only two people". The phrase "taller than only two" fixes E to the 3rd from the bottom — turn ranking words into a position immediately.

Double line-up (Mains staple): each person carries two attributes — seat and a city, or floor and a fruit. Solve the harder attribute (usually the seating) first, then map the second column onto the finished frame. Do not try to satisfy both at once; you will thrash.


7. Order of attempt — the section-clearing skill

Under a 20-minute Prelims sectional lock, which set you attempt matters as much as how. Fast triage in the first 30 seconds of a set:

  • Count the definite clues. A set with 3–4 position-fixing clues will crack fast; a set that is all "somewhere left of" floaters will eat time — skip it, come back.
  • Prefer floor/box/scheduling (no facing direction) over mixed-facing circular sets when you are choosing what to solve first.
  • One set, all its questions. Never solve a set for one question and leave — the marginal cost of the other four answers is near zero once the grid stands.
  • Abandon on contradiction, not on struggle. If two clues genuinely clash, you misread one — re-scan once. If they still clash, the set is beyond your 4-minute budget; move on with zero guilt.

8. Solved set — a linear double-row

Six people A, B, C, D, E, F sit in two rows of three. Row 1 (A, B, C) faces south; Row 2 (D, E, F) faces north; members of the two rows face each other. B sits at an extreme end. The one facing B sits second to the right of E. C does not face D. A sits to the immediate right of B.

Build it. Frame: two rows of 3, facing each other.

  • "B at an extreme end" + "A immediate right of B" (Row 1 faces south, so B's right is your left). Place B at the right end (your view), A to B's immediate right → B at position 3, A at position 2 of Row 1. C takes position 1.
  • Row 1 (facing south, left→right as you look): C – A – B.
  • "The one facing B is second to the right of E." B is opposite Row 2's end seat. In Row 2 (facing north), "second to the right of E" fixes E and the B-facer. Testing placements, E sits at Row 2 position 1 and the person second to E's right (position 3) faces B.
  • "C does not face D" → since C is at Row 1 position 1 (facing D's slot), D cannot be opposite C; D goes to Row 2 position 3 (facing B), leaving F opposite A.
  • Row 2 (facing north): E – F – D, with E facing C, F facing A, D facing B. ✓

Now the questions answer themselves: Who faces A? F. Who sits at the ends of Row 2? E and D. This is the pattern — 4 minutes to the grid, then five one-word answers.


9. The 4-minute protocol

For every puzzle set, in order:

  1. Draw the frame (10 sec) — never solve in your head.
  2. Place definite clues (fix ends, exact gaps) — 60–90 sec.
  3. Open cases for any two-way clue; carry Case 1 / Case 2 forward.
  4. Apply floaters; let contradictions delete the wrong case.
  5. Lock the facing direction before reading any left/right question.
  6. Sweep all 5 questions off the finished grid.

If you are past 4 minutes with no stable grid, flag and leave. In IBPS, the discipline to abandon one bad set is worth more marks than the cleverness to force it.

Traps IBPS PO sets — and how to dodge them

These are the exact option-traps and misreads that cost marks under negative marking.

In Prelims, 3–4 sets = 15–20 of the 35 reasoning questions. In Mains, 3–4 sets = 15–22 of the 40. Together with the fact that they're the most time-consuming questions, puzzles effectively decide whether you clear the reasoning section.

Neither blindly. Spend the first minute triaging: solve the set with the most definite clues (usually a floor or scheduling puzzle) first to bank a certain 5 marks, then attempt syllogism/inequality/coding singles, and return to harder puzzle sets only with time in hand.

Draw a facing arrow next to every person before reading a single left/right clue. Facing north, their left is your left; facing south or outward, it mirrors; in a circle facing the centre, 'left' means clockwise. Ninety percent of 'I built the grid but got the answer wrong' errors are a skipped facing check.

You almost certainly misread one — re-scan the two clues once. If they still clash, you likely need a second case (Case 1/Case 2) you didn't open. If it genuinely can't resolve inside 4 minutes, flag the set and move on; forcing it is the classic marks-and-time sink.

Same six frames, one extra layer. Mains adds a second attribute (double line-up), mixes facing directions, and sometimes wraps a blood-relation or coded-direction twist around the seating. If your Prelims method is clean, Mains is just more bookkeeping — not a new skill.
