A steady minority of CLAT Logical Reasoning questions are analytical — small ordering, ranking and arrangement sets that ask what must follow from a handful of conditions. They reward method over insight: represent the clues on paper, chain the constraints, and separate what is fixed from what is merely possible. This chapter installs that discipline plus the must/could/cannot vocabulary and simple series patterns, converting a fiddly question type into reliable marks.

Analytical Reasoning and Sequences — CLAT Logical Reasoning

Alongside the argument passages, CLAT keeps a smaller strand of analytical reasoning: you are given a few facts or rules — who is taller than whom, who sits where, the order of events — and asked what must be true. These reward not cleverness but method: represent the clues cleanly, combine them, and separate what is fixed from what is merely possible.


1. The mindset: fixed vs possible

Analytical sets turn on one distinction:

  • A statement must be true if it holds in every arrangement allowed by the clues.
  • A statement could be true if it holds in at least one allowed arrangement.
  • A statement must be false if it holds in no allowed arrangement.

The commonest error: treating a possible arrangement as the arrangement. If the clues leave two orders open, anything true in only one of them is not a "must".


2. Represent before you reason

Never solve these in your head. Draw a quick structure:

  • Rankings / comparisons (taller, older, scored more) → a vertical line or a left-to-right order. Write "A > B" for "A is taller than B".
  • Sequences / schedules (days, positions, order of finish) → a row of slots to fill.
  • Groupings / matching (who owns which pet, who studies which subject) → a small grid/table.

Translate each clue into a symbol as you read it. The picture does the remembering so your mind can do the reasoning.


3. Chaining comparisons

Comparison clues combine transitively:

A is taller than B. B is taller than C.A > B > C. So A is taller than C, and C is the shortest of the three — both are forced.

  • Combine every pair you can into one chain.
  • Watch for clues that don't connect — if you know A > B and C > D but nothing links the two pairs, the relation between, say, A and C is undetermined.

Careful with "not": "A is not taller than B" means A ≤ B (A is shorter or equal), not "A is shorter". Unless equality is ruled out, keep both possibilities.


4. Working sequences and slots

For order/arrangement puzzles:

  1. Draw the slots (positions 1–5, Monday–Friday).
  2. Place the most restrictive clue first — a clue that fixes a position ("C is third") or a rigid block ("A immediately before B") narrows the field fastest.
  3. Propagate each new clue's consequences before adding the next.
  4. If a clue leaves branches, note each branch; a "must be true" answer survives all branches.

Block clues: "X sits immediately next to Y" creates a movable pair [XY]/[YX]; "X is somewhere before Y" only fixes order, not distance. Read distance words exactly — immediately vs somewhere changes everything.


5. Reading the question stem precisely

The stem tells you what kind of statement to hunt for:

  • "Which must be true?" → true in every valid arrangement.
  • "Which could be true?" → true in at least one; eliminate the impossible.
  • "Which must be false / cannot be true?" → true in no arrangement.
  • "If [extra condition], then…" → add the condition, re-derive, and answer within that narrowed world only.

Conditional questions are self-contained: an extra "if" applies to that question alone. Do not carry it into the next question.


6. Simple number and letter series

CLAT sometimes slips in a short series: find the pattern and continue it.

  • Look for a constant difference (2, 5, 8, 11 → +3) or ratio (3, 6, 12, 24 → ×2).
  • Try alternating patterns (two interleaved sequences) if a single rule fails.
  • For letters, convert to positions (A=1 … Z=26) and look for the same kinds of steps.

State the rule explicitly before predicting the next term — a guessed pattern that fits three terms may fail the fourth.


7. Exam protocol

  1. Represent the clues as a line, row of slots, or grid — never reason blind.
  2. Chain all comparisons; note where the chain has gaps.
  3. Place the most restrictive clue first, then propagate consequences.
  4. Read the stem: must / could / cannot / if-then — and hunt for exactly that.
  5. For "must be true", accept only what holds in every valid arrangement.
  6. Treat each "if" question as its own world; reset before the next question.

'Must be true' means the statement holds in every arrangement the clues allow — it is forced. 'Could be true' means it holds in at least one allowed arrangement — it is merely possible. The most common error is proving a statement in one arrangement and calling it a 'must' when another valid arrangement makes it false.

Because analytical sets have several interacting constraints, and working memory drops them under time pressure. A quick line, row of slots, or grid holds every fact reliably, freeing your mind to combine the clues rather than struggle to remember them.

Accept that some relations are undetermined. If you know A > B and C > D with no clue linking the pairs, you cannot compare A with C or D. Recognising an unlinked gap is itself the answer to many 'which must be true?' questions — often 'cannot be determined'.

Add that condition to the original clues, re-derive the arrangement within that narrowed world, and answer only within it. Crucially, the extra 'if' applies to that one question — drop it and return to the base clues before the next question in the set.

State the rule before predicting. Check first for a constant difference (add the same number) or a constant ratio (multiply by the same number); if neither fits, try two interleaved patterns or squares/cubes. A pattern that fits three terms but not a stated rule can still fail the next term, so name the rule explicitly.
