Assumptions, Inferences and Implications — CLAT Logical Reasoning

These three words are cousins, and CLAT exploits the confusion. An assumption is something the argument depends on but does not state — it points backward, filling the gap beneath the reasoning. An inference (or implication) is something that follows from the passage — it points forward, out of what was said. Mix them up and you will pick a right-sounding answer to the wrong question.


1. Assumption — what the argument needs

An assumption is an unstated premise the argument must take for granted for its conclusion to hold.

The council should build a new car park, because the town centre is always short of parking.

The argument leaps from "short of parking" to "build a car park." It assumes, unstated, that a new car park would actually relieve the shortage (and perhaps that no cheaper solution would do). Remove that assumption and the conclusion collapses.

The negation test — the sharpest tool for assumption questions:

  • Take a candidate assumption and negate it.
  • If the negation destroys the argument, it was a necessary assumption.
  • If the argument survives the negation, it was not the assumption.

Applied above: negate "a new car park would relieve the shortage" → "a new car park would not relieve the shortage." Now the argument falls apart → it was an assumption.


2. Inference — what the argument yields

An inference is a statement that must be true (or is strongly supported) if the passage is true. It comes out of the passage; you are not adding to it.

Every player in the squad has played for the national team. Ravi is in the squad.

Valid inference: Ravi has played for the national team. It is forced by the passage.

The gold standard for a CLAT inference: would it be impossible for the inference to be false while the passage is true? If yes, it is a safe inference. If the passage merely makes it plausible, it is too weak for a "must be true" stem.


3. Assumption vs inference — the direction test

The one-line distinction: an assumption is required by the argument; an inference is required by the facts. Ask "does the argument lean on this?" (assumption) versus "does the passage force this?" (inference).


4. The "too strong" trap in inferences

Because a valid inference must be guaranteed, the safest answers are usually modest. Watch the quantifiers:

  • The passage says "many economists" → an inference saying "all economists" is too strong, unsafe.
  • The passage says "prices rose in several cities""prices rose everywhere" overreaches.

Rule of thumb: when an inference option uses always, never, all, none, only, must and the passage only supported some/often/likely, it is probably too strong to be the answer.


5. The "out of scope" trap in inferences

A valid inference stays within the passage's content. Options that introduce a new topic, a value judgment, or a recommendation the passage never made are out of scope — even if reasonable.

Passage: "Solar power costs have fallen sharply over the last decade." Out of scope: "The government should ban coal plants." — a policy leap the passage does not support. Safe: "Solar power was more expensive a decade ago than it is now."


6. Implications and "must follow"

An implication is essentially an inference the author's statements commit them to. If a passage says "Only members may vote" and "Priya voted," it implies "Priya is a member." Treat implication questions exactly like inference questions: accept only what is logically forced, reject the merely plausible.

  1. Read the stem and fix the direction: assumption (backward, needed) or inference/implication (forward, forced).
  2. For assumptions, apply the negation test — the option whose negation wrecks the argument is the answer.
  3. For inferences, accept only what cannot be false if the passage is true.
