Introduction

In the 14th century, two POWERFUL kingdoms emerged in the DECCAN region of South India — the VIJAYANAGARA EMPIRE (Hindu) and the BAHMANI SULTANATE (Muslim). They FOUGHT each other for over 200 years, yet both produced REMARKABLE cultural achievements.

Part 1: The Vijayanagara Empire (1336–1646)

Foundation

  • Founded by HARIARA I and BUKKA I (the Sangama brothers) in 1336 CE
  • They were sent by their teacher VIDYARANYA to establish a Hindu kingdom
  • The capital was VIJAYANAGARA (modern HAMPI, Karnataka) — 'City of Victory'
  • The empire PROSPERED for over 300 years

Krishnadevaraya (1509–1529)

The GREATEST ruler of Vijayanagara.

Military Achievements:

  • DEFEATED the Bahmani Sultanate
  • CONQUERED Raichur Doab, Odisha, and parts of the Deccan
  • Kept the empire STRONG and SECURE

Administration:

  • EFFICIENT administration with PROVINCIAL governors (Nayakas)
  • Land revenue was SYSTEMATIC (land surveyed, classified)
  • TRADE flourished — with PORTUGUESE, Arabs, Chinese

Culture:

  • Himself a SCHOLAR — wrote 'Amuktamalyada' in Telugu
  • Patronised LITERATURE in Telugu, Sanskrit, Kannada, and Tamil
  • His court had the 'Ashtadiggajas' (EIGHT great poets)
  • Eight poets including TENALI RAMAKRISHNA (famous for wit)

Foreign Visitors:

  • Domingo Paes (Portuguese) and Nikitin (Russian) visited Vijayanagara
  • They DESCRIBED it as a RICH and BEAUTIFUL city

Architecture of Vijayanagara

The Vijayanagara style is known for:

  • MASSIVE structures (large scale)
  • ORNATE pillars with carvings of horses and warriors
  • MANDAPAS (pillared halls)
  • GOPURAMS (TALL gateway towers)
  • MONOLITHIC sculptures (carved from single rock)

Part 2: The Bahmani Sultanate (1347–1527)

Foundation

  • He REBELLED against Muhammad bin Tughlaq
  • Capital: GULBARGA (later moved to BIDAR)

Part 3: Conflict and Cultural Synthesis

The Conflict

  • Vijayanagara and Bahmani FOUGHT constantly, especially over the Raichur Doab (the fertile region between the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers)
  • The conflict was POLITICAL and TERRITORIAL, not purely religious
  • Both sides showed RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE within their own kingdoms

Cultural Synthesis

Despite CONFLICT, there was CULTURAL EXCHANGE:
