The Mughal Empire
Introduction
The MUGHAL EMPIRE was one of the LARGEST and most POWERFUL empires in Indian history. It ruled most of the Indian subcontinent from 1526 to 1707 (and declined thereafter). The Mughals were of TURKO-MONGOL origin but became FULLY INDIANISED. They are famous for their ADMINISTRATION, RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE, and MAGNIFICENT ARCHITECTURE.

2. Babur (1526–1530)
- Born in Farghana (modern Uzbekistan) in 1483
- Descended from TIMUR on his father's side and CHENGIZ KHAN on his mother's side
- Invited by DAULAT KHAN LODI and Rana Sanga to fight Ibrahim Lodi
- First Battle of Panipat (1526): Defeated Ibrahim Lodi using GUNPOWDER and superior TACTICS (Rashmi tactic — tying carts together)
- Battle of Khanwa (1527): Defeated Rana Sanga of Mewar
- Wrote his AUTOBIOGRAPHY 'Baburnama' in Chagatai Turkish
- Died in 1530; buried in KABUL (as he wished)
3. Akbar (1556–1605) — The Greatest Mughal
Early Life
- Became emperor at age 13 after Humayun's death
- Bairam KHAN served as regent (1556–1560)
- Second Battle of Panipat (1556): Defeated Hemu (the Hindu general)
Military Expansion
- Conquered Malwa (1562), Gujarat (1572), Bengal (1576), Kashmir (1586), and parts of the Deccan
- By his death, the Mughal Empire covered most of North India
Rajput Policy
- WON over Rajput rulers through MARRIAGE and RESPECT
- Married JODHA BAI (a Rajput princess)
- Appointed Rajputs as HIGH officials (Man Singh, Todar Mal, Birbal)
- This policy STRENGTHENED the empire

Mansabdari System
- Every official (MANSABDAR) was given a RANK (Zat = personal rank; Sawar = cavalry rank)
- Mansabdars were PAID in salaries or JAGIRS (land grants)
- The system was MERT-BASED — promotion depended on performance
- It ensured LOYALTY to the emperor

- His court had the 'NAVRATNAS' (Nine Jewels):

5. Aurangzeb (1658–1707)
Expansion
- Expanded the empire to its LARGEST size — covering almost ALL of India
- Conquered Bijapur (1686) and Golconda (1687) in the Deccan
Controversial Policies
- REIMPOSED the Jizya tax on non-Muslims (1679)
- DESTROYED several Hindu temples
- DISMISSed Rajput officials
- These policies created WIDESPREAD DISCONTENT
Decline of the Empire
- Aurangzeb spent 25 YEARS in the Deccan fighting Marathas
- This DRAINED the empire's treasury
- The Marathas under SHIVAJI and later the PESHWA's WEAKENED the Mughals
- After Aurangzeb's death (1707), the empire RAPIDLY DECLINED

Central Government

- Diwan: Finance minister
- Mir Bakshi: Military paymaster

Provincial Government
- Empire divided into SUBAS (provinces)
- Each suba had a GOVERNOR (subadar)
- DIVAN (revenue officer) reported directly to the emperor
