Ancient Civilisations — China (c. 1600 BCE Onwards)
Introduction
Chinese civilisation arose along the HWANG HO (YELLOW RIVER) and the YANGTZE RIVER. It is one of the world's OLDEST continuous civilisations — surviving for OVER 3,500 YEARS. Unlike Mesopotamia, Egypt, or the Indus Valley, Chinese civilisation did NOT collapse or disappear. It continued, through dynasties, to the PRESENT DAY.
Geography — The Two Great Rivers
| River | Details |
|---|---|
| Hwang Ho (Yellow River) | North. Called 'Yellow' because of the fine YELLOW LOESS (wind-blown silt) it carries. Floods were DESTRUCTIVE — called 'China's Sorrow.' |
| Yangtze River | South. LongEST river in Asia. Gentler than the Hwang Ho. Rice-growing region. |
The Dynastic Cycle
Chinese history is organised into DYNASTIES — families of rulers who passed power from father to son. The CYCLE of dynasties — rise, peak, decline, fall — is a CENTRAL idea in Chinese history.
The MANDATE OF HEAVEN
'The Mandate of Heaven (TIANMING) is the idea that the ruler rules with HEAVEN'S APPROVAL. If the ruler is GOOD and JUST, Heaven supports him. If the ruler is CORRUPT, CRUEL, or INCOMPETENT, Heaven WITHDRAWS the mandate — and the people have the RIGHT to rebel.'
This was a REVOLUTIONARY idea. It justified REBELLION against bad rulers. This is why China had many DYNASTIC CHANGES — each justified by claiming the old dynasty had 'lost the Mandate of Heaven.'
Key Dynasties
| Dynasty | Period | Key Achievements |
|---|---|---|
| Shang | c. 1600–1046 BCE | BRONZE work. ORACLE BONES (earliest Chinese writing). Advanced chariot warfare. |
| Zhou | c. 1046–256 BCE | LONGEST dynasty (790 years!). 'MANDATE OF HEAVEN' concept. IRON tools. Confucius and Laozi. |
| Qin | c. 221–206 BCE | First UNIFIED China. BEGAN THE GREAT WALL. Standardised writing, currency, weights and measures. |
| Han | c. 206 BCE – 220 CE | 'GOLDEN AGE.' Invention of PAPER. SILK ROAD trade. Strong central government. |
Great Contributions of Ancient China
| Invention | Dynasty | Impact on the World |
|---|---|---|
| Silk | Believed to be Xia/Shang | Secret of sericulture (silk farming) guarded for 3000 years. SILK ROAD trade. |
| Paper | Han (c. 105 CE) | Made from mulberry bark and hemp. SPREAD writing across the world. |
| Compass | Later (Song Dynasty) | First used for FORTUNE-TELLING. Later for NAVIGATION. |
| Gunpowder | Later (Tang/Song) | Accidentally discovered by alchemists searching for IMMORTALITY. |
| Printing | Later (Tang) | WOODBLOCK printing. First printed book: the DIAMOND SUTRA (868 CE). |
The Great Wall of China
'The Great Wall is the LONGEST man-made structure in the world — stretching over 21,000 km across northern China.'
- It was NOT built by one ruler. It was BUILT OVER CENTURIES by different dynasties
- The QIN emperor (c. 220 BCE) CONNECTED earlier walls. The MING dynasty (c. 1400–1600) built the BEST-preserved sections
- Purpose: to PROTECT China from invasions from the north (Mongols and other nomads)
- Built by soldiers, peasants, and prisoners — MILLIONS died building it
- It is a SYMBOL of China's strength, sacrifice, and isolation
Confucius and Confucianism
KONG FUZI (Master Kong, 551–479 BCE) — Latinised as CONFUCIUS. He was a PHILOSOPHER and TEACHER who lived during the Zhou dynasty.
Key Teachings
| Teaching | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ren (Benevolence / Humaneness) | Love for others. The highest virtue. 'Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.' |
| Li (Ritual / Propriety) | Correct behaviour. Manners. Respect for tradition. |
| Xiao (Filial Piety) | RESPECT FOR ELDERS — especially parents and ancestors. The MOST important Chinese virtue. |
| Education | Everyone CAN and SHOULD be educated. Not just the rich. |
| Social Harmony | If everyone KNOWS their place and acts CORRECTLY, society will be HARMONIOUS. |
'Confucianism is NOT a religion. It is a PHILOSOPHY of life. It teaches how to be a GOOD PERSON, a GOOD CHILD, a GOOD SUBJECT, and a GOOD RULER. It has shaped Chinese society for 2500 years.'
Society
| Class | Role |
|---|---|
| Emperor | 'Son of Heaven.' Ruler by the Mandate of Heaven. |

| Farmers | Respected as producers of FOOD (the basis of society). |
| Artisans | Craftspeople. Made bronze, silk, jade, pottery. |
| Merchants | LOWEST class. Considered UNPRODUCTIVE (they just moved goods, not made them). |

The Oracle Bones — China's Earliest Writing
The SHANG dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE) used ORACLE BONES for DIVINATION. Questions were carved on turtle shells or animal bones, which were then HEATED until they cracked. The cracks were 'read' as answers from the ancestors.
Significance: Oracle bones are the EARLIEST evidence of Chinese writing — over 3,000 years old. They recorded: royal activities, weather, warfare, harvests, and religious rituals. They tell us MORE about the Shang dynasty than we know about ANY contemporary civilisation.
Common Mistakes in ICSE Exams
- Saying Confucius founded a 'religion' — Confucianism is a PHILOSOPHY, not a religion. It does not have gods or an afterlife.
- Forgetting the MANDATE OF HEAVEN — This is a KEY Chinese concept. It explained WHY dynasties changed.
- Confusing the Yellow River (Hwang Ho) with the Yangtze — Hwang Ho is NORTH, called 'China's Sorrow.' Yangtze is SOUTH, longer and gentler.
- Saying the Great Wall is VISIBLE from space — This is a MYTH. It is not visible from space with the naked eye.
Self-Test: 5 Questions
Q1. What is the MANDATE OF HEAVEN? Why was it important? A1. The Mandate of Heaven is the Chinese belief that a ruler rules with HEAVEN'S APPROVAL. If the ruler is GOOD and JUST, Heaven supports him. If he is CORRUPT or CRUEL, Heaven WITHDRAWS the mandate — and rebellion is justified. This explains the DYNASTIC CYCLE: each new dynasty claimed the old one had 'lost the Mandate.' It was a powerful idea that held rulers ACCOUNTABLE.
Q2. Who was CONFUCIUS? What were his key teachings? A2. Confucius (Kong Fuzi, 551–479 BCE) was China's GREATEST PHILOSOPHER. Key teachings: REN — benevolence and humaneness ('do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself'). LI — correct behaviour and ritual. XIAO — filial piety (respect for elders). EDUCATION for all. SOCIAL HARMONY through each person fulfilling their role. Confucianism is a PHILOSOPHY, not a religion.
Q3. What are the FOUR GREAT INVENTIONS of ancient China? A3. The four great inventions are: (1) PAPER — invented by Cai Lun during the Han dynasty (c. 105 CE), made from mulberry bark and hemp. (2) PRINTING — woodblock printing (first printed book: the Diamond Sutra, 868 CE). (3) COMPASS — first used for fortune-telling, later for navigation. (4) GUNPOWDER — discovered by alchemists seeking immortality. SILK is also a major Chinese invention but pre-dates these four.
Q4. Describe the GREAT WALL OF CHINA. Why was it built? A4. The Great Wall is the LONGEST man-made structure on Earth (over 21,000 km). It was built by DIFFERENT dynasties over centuries. The QIN emperor (c. 220 BCE) connected earlier sections. The MING dynasty built the best-preserved sections. It was built to PROTECT China from northern invaders (Mongols and other nomadic groups). Millions of workers died building it. It was NOT built by a single emperor.
Q5. How was CHINESE SOCIETY structured? A5. Chinese society had a CLEAR hierarchy: (1) EMPEROR — 'Son of Heaven,' ruler by the Mandate of Heaven. (2) SCHOLAR-OFFICIALS — the most respected class. They passed CIVIL SERVICE EXAMS based on Confucian texts. (3) FARMERS — respected as producers of food. (4) ARTISANS — skilled craftspeople (bronze, silk, jade). (5) MERCHANTS — the LOWEST class, considered unproductive because they just MOVED goods rather than creating them.
