The Vedic Age (c. 1500–600 BCE)
Introduction
The VEDIC AGE is named after the VEDAS — the oldest sacred texts of India. It is divided into TWO periods: EARLY VEDIC (c. 1500–1000 BCE) and LATER VEDIC (c. 1000–600 BCE). This period saw the composition of the Vedas, the emergence of kingdoms, and the establishment of social structures that INFLUENCED India for thousands of years.
The Aryans and the Debate
The people who composed the Vedas called themselves ARYANS (meaning 'NOBLE ONES'). 'The migration of the Aryans into India is one of the most DEBATED topics in Indian history. Some historians say they came from CENTRAL ASIA. Others say they were INDIGENOUS to India. What is UNDISPUTED: the Vedas are the FOUNDATION of Indian civilisation.'
The Four Vedas
| Veda | Meaning | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Rig Veda | 'Knowledge of Hymns' | OLDEST. 1028 hymns to gods (Indra, Agni, Varuna, Soma). The MOST IMPORTANT. |
| Sama Veda | 'Knowledge of Melodies' | Musical CHANTS. Verses from Rig Veda SET to music. |
| Yajur Veda | 'Knowledge of Sacrifice' | PROSE formulas for performing YAJNAS (sacrifices). |
| Atharva Veda | 'Knowledge of Atharvan' | SPELLS, CHARMS, and MEDICINE. Daily life, healing, magic. |
Other Important Texts
- Brahmanas: Commentaries on the Vedas — explaining RITUALS and SACRIFICES
- Aranyakas: 'Forest Texts' — for HERMITS and those who renounced society
- Upanishads: PHILOSOPHICAL texts — the CULMINATION of Vedic thought. Concepts: BRAHMAN (universal soul), ATMAN (individual soul), KARMA, MOKSHA
Early Vedic Period (c. 1500–1000 BCE)
Society and Economy
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Lifestyle | TRIBAL. PASTORAL (cattle = wealth). Semi-NOMADIC. Moving with herds. |
| Economy | Cattle-keeping was CENTRAL. The word for 'war' = gavishthi (search for cows). |
| Political Unit | JANA (tribe), not JANAPADA (territory). RAJA = tribal CHIEF, not a king with a kingdom. |
| Assemblies | SABHA (council of elders) and SAMITI (general assembly). Early forms of DEMOCRACY. |
Social Life
- Family: PATRIARCHAL (father was head). Joint family system.
- Women: RELATIVELY HIGH STATUS. Could attend SABHA. Composed hymns. FAMOUS WOMEN: Gargi and Maitreyi — philosophers and teachers.
- Varna System: BEGINNINGS — based on OCCUPATION, not birth. FOUR VARNA: Brahmana (priest/scholar), Kshatriya (warrior/ruler), Vaishya (trader/farmer), Shudra (servant/labourer).
- Education: ORAL — students memorised the Vedas by HEART. No writing.
Religion
- Nature gods: INDRA (rain, war — most important), AGNI (fire — messenger to gods), VARUNA (sky, cosmic order), SURYA (sun), VAYU (wind)
- YAJNAS (sacrifices) — offerings of grain, ghee, and animals into the FIRE
- NO temples. NO idols. Worship was OUTDOORS around the SACRED FIRE
Later Vedic Period (c. 1000–600 BCE)
Changes from Early to Later Vedic
| Aspect | Early Vedic | Later Vedic |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | Pastoral (cattle) | AGRICULTURAL (plough farming) |
| Settlement | Semi-nomadic | PERMANENT villages and kingdoms |
| Political | Tribal chief (Raja) | TERRITORIAL KING with a CAPITAL |
| Caste | Occupation-based, flexible | Birth-based, RIGID |
| Women | Relatively HIGH status | Status DECLINED significantly |
| Religion | Simple sacrifices | COMPLEX rituals. More POWER to priests. |
The Rise of Kingdoms
Tribes became TERRITORIAL KINGDOMS (Janapadas). The RAJA became a POWERFUL KING who:
- Performed GRAND YAJNAS (Ashvamedha — horse sacrifice) to prove POWER
- Had a COURT of priests and officials
- Collected TAXES from farmers and traders
The Four Ashramas (Stages of Life)
A Later Vedic concept:
- Brahmacharya: Student life — studying the Vedas with a guru
- Grihastha: Householder — marriage, family, work
- Vanaprastha: Retirement — gradual withdrawal from society
- Sannyasa: Renunciation — complete detachment from worldly life
The Gurukul System
Students lived with the GURU (teacher) in the forest hermitage (ashrama). They served the teacher, studied the Vedas, and learned skills. The relationship between guru and shishya (student) was SACRED.

Common Mistakes in ICSE Exams
- Saying the caste system was ALWAYS rigid — In the EARLY Vedic period, varna was BASED ON OCCUPATION and was flexible. It became RIGID (birth-based) in the LATER Vedic period.
- Confusing Vedas and Upanishads — The FOUR VEDAS are the earliest texts. The UPANISHADS are later philosophical works that build on the Vedas.
- Forgetting Gargi and Maitreyi — Famous women scholars of the Vedic age. They show that women COULD be philosophers and teachers.
- Saying Aryans 'built cities' — The Aryans were PASTORAL (Early Vedic) and later AGRICULTURAL. They did NOT build cities like the Indus Valley people.
Self-Test: 5 Questions
Q1. Name the FOUR VEDAS and briefly describe the content of each. A1. (1) RIG VEDA — the OLDEST. 1028 hymns praising gods like Indra, Agni, and Varuna. (2) SAMA VEDA — musical CHANTS. Verses from the Rig Veda set to melody. (3) YAJUR VEDA — PROSE formulas for performing sacrifices and rituals. (4) ATHARVA VEDA — SPELLS, charms, and medicine for daily life.
Q2. How did SOCIETY change from the Early Vedic to the Later Vedic period? A2. Major changes: (1) ECONOMY — from pastoral (cattle) to agricultural (plough farming). (2) POLITICAL — from tribal chief to territorial king. (3) CASTE — from flexible, occupation-based to RIGID, birth-based. (4) WOMEN — from relatively HIGH status (Gargi, Maitreyi) to DECLINING status. (5) RELIGION — from simple sacrifices to COMPLEX rituals with powerful priests.
Q3. What was the STATUS OF WOMEN in the Vedic period? Was it the same in both periods? A3. No, it CHANGED. In the EARLY Vedic period, women had relatively HIGH status. They could attend assemblies (Sabha), compose hymns, and choose husbands. Famous women scholars: GARGI and MAITREYI. In the LATER Vedic period, women's status DECLINED. They were excluded from assemblies and education. Child marriage became common.
Q4. What is the GURUKUL system? How did it work? A4. The Gurukul system was the traditional INDIAN EDUCATION system. Students (shishyas) lived with the guru (teacher) in his ashrama (forest hermitage). They served the guru, memorised the Vedas, and learned life skills. The relationship was SACRED — the guru was like a FATHER. Education was FREE. No fees — only GURU DAKSHINA (a voluntary gift at the end).
Q5. Who were the main GODS of the Early Vedic period? What was their role? A5. The main gods were: INDRA — the most important god of rain, thunder, and war. He was the HERO of the Rig Veda.
