The Enormous Turnip

About the Story

'The Enormous Turnip' is a classic RUSSIAN folk tale. It is a simple story that teaches a POWERFUL lesson about TEAMWORK and HELPING each other.

'Sometimes, a job is TOO BIG for one person. But when EVERYONE works together — ANYTHING is possible!'

The Story

The Farmer Plants a Seed

An old FARMER lived in a little house with his wife, his grandson, his dog, his cat, and a little mouse.

One spring morning, the farmer planted a TURNIP seed in his garden. He watered it every day. He watched the SUN shine on it.

'Grow, little turnip, GROW!' said the farmer.

And the turnip GREW.

The ENORMOUS Turnip

The turnip GREW and GREW and GREW. It grew BIGGER and BIGGER and BIGGER.

Soon, it was the BIGGEST turnip anyone had ever seen! It was HUGE — as big as a BARREL!

'Time to PULL it out!' said the farmer.

The Farmer Tries

The farmer grabbed the turnip's GREEN LEAVES. He PULLED and PULLED and PULLED.

He pulled SO HARD that his face turned RED. He pulled SO HARD that his feet SLID on the ground.

But the turnip did NOT move.

'This turnip is TOO BIG for me alone!' said the farmer.

The Farmer Calls His Wife

'Come, wife! HELP me pull this turnip!' called the farmer.

The farmer's wife came running. She GRABBED the farmer around the waist. The farmer grabbed the turnip.

They PULLED and PULLED and PULLED.

But the turnip STILL did not move.

'This turnip is TOO BIG for two of us!' said the farmer's wife.

The Grandson Joins

'Come, grandson! HELP us pull this turnip!' called the farmer's wife.

The grandson came running. He GRABBED the grandmother. She grabbed the farmer. The farmer grabbed the turnip.

They PULLED and PULLED and PULLED.

But the turnip STILL did not move.

The Dog Joins

'Come, dog! HELP us pull this turnip!' called the grandson.

The dog ran over. He GRABBED the grandson's shirt with his teeth. The grandson grabbed the grandmother. She grabbed the farmer. The farmer grabbed the turnip.

They PULLED and PULLED and PULLED.

But the turnip STILL would not budge!

The Cat Joins

'Come, cat! HELP us pull this turnip!' called the dog.

The cat ran over. She GRABBED the dog's tail. The dog grabbed the grandson. The grandson grabbed the grandmother. She grabbed the farmer. The farmer grabbed the turnip.

They PULLED and PULLED and PULLED.

But the turnip STAYED in the ground!

The Tiny Mouse

Just then, a TINY MOUSE came by. He saw everyone struggling.

'Can I HELP?' squeaked the little mouse.

Everyone looked at the tiny mouse. 'YOU? You are SO SMALL! How can YOU help?'

'Let me try!' said the mouse.

One More Pull

The mouse GRABBED the cat's tail. The cat grabbed the dog. The dog grabbed the grandson. The grandson grabbed the grandmother. She grabbed the farmer. The farmer grabbed the turnip.

'ONE... TWO... THREE... PULL!' shouted the farmer.

They all PULLED together with ALL their might.

And... POP!

The turnip came FLYING out of the ground! Everyone fell BACKWARDS — into a big, laughing HEAP!

Celebrating Together

That night, the farmer's wife made a DELICIOUS turnip soup. The farmer, his wife, the grandson, the dog, the cat, and the TINY MOUSE all sat down to eat together.

'See?' said the farmer, smiling at the mouse. 'Even the SMALLEST helper can make a BIG difference!'

Think and Discuss

  1. Why couldn't the farmer pull the turnip by himself?
  2. Why did everyone think the mouse could NOT help?
  3. Did the mouse's help actually make a difference? How?
  4. What is the MAIN LESSON of this story?

Fun Activity

Act out this story with your friends! Everyone can play a different character. Do NOT forget the MOUSE!

Common Mistakes in Storytelling

  1. 'When writing a story, USE REPETITION for effect. "They pulled and pulled and pulled" makes the action feel LONG and DIFFICULT.'
  2. 'Add SOUND EFFECTS: "POP!" — words that make sounds are called ONOMATOPOEIA.'

Self-Test

Q1: What did the farmer plant in his garden?

Questions students ask

The real ones — pulled from the Q&A community and tutor sessions.

Each helper who joined the line added a little more pulling strength. By the time the farmer, his wife, the grandson, the dog, and the cat were all pulling together, they were very close to getting the turnip out, but it still would not move. The mouse's small amount of extra strength was the final little bit needed, so when it joined and everyone pulled together, the turnip popped out. It teaches that every contribution, no matter how small, can count.

Folk tales often repeat words and phrases on purpose. Repeating 'pulled and pulled and pulled' makes the reader feel how long and difficult the pulling was, and it makes the story fun to say aloud. This repetition, along with the growing line of helpers, builds excitement until the satisfying 'POP!' when the turnip finally comes out.
