1. Why Classify?
Classification ORGANISES the vast diversity of life. It reveals EVOLUTIONARY RELATIONSHIPS. It makes STUDYING organisms manageable. 'Classification is not just about naming — it's about understanding how all life is CONNECTED.'
2. Whittaker's Five Kingdoms (1969)
R.H. Whittaker classified all life into FIVE KINGDOMS based on: Cell structure (prokaryotic/eukaryotic). Body organisation (unicellular/multicellular). Mode of nutrition (autotrophic/heterotrophic). Cell wall composition.

5. Binomial Nomenclature (Carolus Linnaeus)
Each species has a TWO-PART SCIENTIFIC NAME: Genus + species. Written in ITALICS (or underlined). Genus starts with CAPITAL. Species starts with SMALL. Examples: Homo sapiens (Human). Panthera tigris (Tiger). Mangifera indica (Mango). 'Binomial nomenclature is UNIVERSAL — the same name is used in every country, in every language. A Japanese scientist and a Brazilian scientist both know EXACTLY what "Panthera tigris" means.'
6. Common Mistakes
- 'Fungi are plants' — Fungi have CHITIN cell walls (not cellulose). They are SAPROPHYTIC (not autotrophic). They are a SEPARATE KINGDOM.
- 'All bacteria are harmful' — Most bacteria are HARMLESS or BENEFICIAL. Only a small fraction cause disease.
- 'Sponges have tissues' — Porifera LACK true tissues and organs. They have specialised cells but no organised tissues.

Protochordates vs Vertebrates
Protochordates (e.g., Amphioxus, Herdmania): Notochord present throughout life or at some stage. No vertebral column. No cranium. Vertebrates: Notochord replaced by VERTEBRAL COLUMN. Cranium present.
