The Universe and the Earth

Introduction

Look up at the night sky. The stars you see are just a TINY fraction of what exists. The UNIVERSE is VAST — almost unimaginably so. It contains BILLIONS of galaxies, each with billions of stars. Our Sun is just ONE star in ONE galaxy — the MILKY WAY. And Earth is just ONE planet orbiting that star. This chapter explores the universe, our solar system, and what makes Earth — our HOME — so SPECIAL.

The Universe

The UNIVERSE is EVERYTHING that exists — all of space, time, matter, and energy. Scientists believe the universe began about 13.8 BILLION YEARS AGO with an event called the BIG BANG — an enormous explosion from a single, incredibly hot and dense point. The universe has been EXPANDING ever since.

Galaxies

A GALAXY is a MASSIVE collection of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter held together by gravity. There are estimated to be over 100 BILLION galaxies in the observable universe.

Our solar system is part of the MILKY WAY GALAXY. The Milky Way is a SPIRAL GALAXY containing about 100-400 BILLION stars. When you look at the Milky Way in the night sky — a faint band of light stretching across the darkness — you are looking at the disk of our own galaxy, edge-on.

The Solar System

The SOLAR SYSTEM consists of the SUN and EVERYTHING that orbits it — eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets (like Pluto), asteroids, comets, and dust.

The Sun

The SUN is the CENTRE of our solar system. It is a STAR — a MASSIVE ball of hot, glowing gas (mostly hydrogen and helium) that produces energy through NUCLEAR FUSION.

The Sun is the SOURCE of almost ALL energy on Earth. It drives our weather, our climate, and makes life POSSIBLE. Without the Sun, Earth would be a frozen, lifeless rock.

The Planets

There are EIGHT planets in our solar system, divided into two groups:

The Inner Planets (Terrestrial Planets)

These are the four planets CLOSEST to the Sun. They are small, rocky, and dense.

The Outer Planets (Gas Giants and Ice Giants)

These are the four planets FARTHEST from the Sun. They are MUCH larger and made mostly of gas and ice.

Dwarf Planets, Asteroids, and Comets

  • Dwarf Planets: Objects like PLUTO (demoted from planet status in 2006), Ceres, and Eris. They orbit the Sun but have not 'cleared' their orbital path of other objects.
  • Asteroids: Rocky objects, mostly found in the ASTEROID BELT between Mars and Jupiter.
  • Comets: Icy bodies that develop glowing TAILS when they approach the Sun.

Earth — The Blue Planet

Earth is UNIQUE in our solar system — and as far as we know, in the entire universe. It is the ONLY place where LIFE is known to exist. What makes Earth so special?

The Moon — Earth's Companion

The Moon does NOT produce its own light. We see it because it REFLECTS sunlight. The Moon's gravity causes TIDES on Earth.
