Forests
Introduction
Forests cover about 24% of India's land area and about 17% of Andhra Pradesh. But forests are MUCH more than just trees. They are COMPLEX ECOSYSTEMS — communities of plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms interacting with each other and with the soil, water, and air. Forests provide us with OXYGEN, store CARBON, regulate RAINFALL, prevent SOIL EROSION, and are home to MILLIONS of species — including many human communities who have lived in and depended on forests for thousands of years.
'Forests are the LUNGS of the Earth. They breathe IN carbon dioxide and breathe OUT oxygen. Without forests, the air we breathe — and the climate we depend on — would not exist.'
Why Forests Matter

Types of Forests in India
India has a WIDE variety of forest types — from the dense evergreen rainforests of the Western Ghats to the thorny scrub of the Thar Desert.

Andhra Pradesh has MOSTLY Tropical Deciduous forests, with some Thorn forests in the drier Rayalaseema region and Mangrove forests along the coast.

Forest-Dwelling Communities (Adivasis)
India's forests are home to MILLIONS of Adivasis (tribal communities) who have lived in and depended on forests for thousands of years. In Andhra Pradesh, major tribal groups include:

These communities depend on MINOR FOREST PRODUCE (MFP) — items collected from the forest like honey, tendu leaves (for bidis), bamboo, medicinal herbs, gum, and fruits. MFP is often their MAIN source of income.
The FOREST RIGHTS ACT (2006) recognises the rights of forest-dwelling communities to live in and use forest land that they have traditionally depended on.
Threats to Forests
