WBCS Mains — written papers — Answer Writing

WBCS splits its mains: several papers are objective and several are written. The written ones are where a candidate can separate themselves, because letter, precis, composition and translation are skills rather than syllabus.

The Sundarbans is a very important mangrove forest in West Bengal and Bangladesh. It is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger and many other species. It protects the coast from cyclones. But now it is facing many problems like sea level rise, salinity and human encroachment. Many people live there and depend on fishing and honey collection. The government should take steps to protect this important ecosystem for future generations. About four million people live in the Indian part of the delta and most of them depend on paddy, fishing, crab collection and honey gathering for a living. Cyclones such as Aila and Amphan destroyed embankments and let salt water into the fields, after which paddy could not be grown for several seasons. Many young men have migrated to other states for work. Tigers stray into the villages and people are killed while entering the forest to collect honey. Some islands have already gone under water and their people have shifted to other islands.

  • A title — explicitly asked for, and free marks
  • Word count stated at the end, which examiners look for
  • Reported, impersonal register throughout
Model answer for this question

Count the passage, fix your target, and draft to it. One title of four to six words. Merge related ideas into single clauses, keep the passage's order of argument, add nothing, and state the word count at the end.

Write on real paper

Photograph the page from your phone and the Studio reads your handwriting — the only way to practise the speed and layout the paper actually tests.

Marked in about twenty seconds

Fast enough to write, read the report and rewrite the same answer in one sitting — which is where the improvement actually comes from.
