Transcription is the process of formation of RNA from DNA. RNA polymerase binds to the promoter region and starts synthesis in the 5' to 3' direction. The DNA strand which acts as template is called template strand. In eukaryotes there are three RNA polymerases while in prokaryotes there is only one. Also in eukaryotes the RNA has to be processed before it goes out of the nucleus?. In eukaryotes transcription takes place inside the nucleus, while in prokaryotes it takes place in the cytoplasm itself.

Define transcription and name its three stages. Describe initiation at the promoter, elongation by RNA polymerase in the 5' to 3' direction using the template strand, and termination. Distinguish template from coding strand. Then contrast: prokaryotes use a single RNA polymerase producing polycistronic transcripts with no processing, while eukaryotes use RNA polymerase I, II and III for rRNA, hnRNA and tRNA respectively, and the primary transcript undergoes splicing, 5' capping and 3' polyadenylation before export. A labelled diagram of the transcription unit earns a mark.
