Minor forest produce is very important for tribal people in Chhattisgarh. Tendu leaf, mahua, sal seed and honey are collected. It gives income during lean season. The state has started procurement at support price through cooperative societies?. This has helped tribals get better rates. Nearly two fifths of the state is under forest and a large part of the tribal population lives in and around it, so collection of forest produce is a regular part of the household economy along with farming and wage work. Tendu leaf collection alone gives work to lakhs of families for a few weeks in summer and the bonus paid on it is an important source of cash before the monsoon. Mahua flower is collected in spring, and sal seed, tamarind and chironji later in the year.
