How to Choose Your Optional Subject — Practice

Question 1

A candidate scores 105 in each of GS I–IV, 120 in the Essay, and 260 across both Optional papers. Another scores identically everywhere except the optional, where they score 320. Quantify the difference and explain why this gap is larger than a comparable GS gap.

Accepted Answer

The arithmetic first. Candidate one totals 105 x 4 + 120 + 260 = 800. Candidate two totals 860. A sixty-mark difference from one block, with everything else held identical, and at the boundaries of a merit list sixty marks moves a candidate across several hundred ranks.

Why this gap is structurally larger than a GS gap. In General Studies, every candidate reads broadly the same standard sources and writes to broadly the same conventions, so the achievable range compresses — the distance between a well-prepared GS paper and an average one is real but bounded, and very high GS scores are uncommon precisely because the material and the marking are shared. The optional has neither property. Candidates in the same optional differ enormously in depth, some hold degrees in the subject, and answers can display a command that a well-read generalist simply cannot imitate. The distribution is therefore wide, and a 320 across two papers is attainable in a way that an equivalent GS performance is not.

The second-order consequence matters as much as the arithmetic. A candidate secure in 500 marks can take more risk in the Essay and in GS — attempting the harder question, taking a definite position — because their floor is higher. The optional does not merely add marks; it changes how the rest of the exam can be written.

Question 2

A candidate says: 'Anthropology has a success rate around 9% and History around 4%, so Anthropology is the better choice.' Identify every flaw in the inference.

Accepted Answer

Four distinct flaws, and together they defeat the inference entirely.

Selection effect, which is the fundamental one. The rate describes the candidates who chose each subject, not what the subject does for a new entrant. Anthropology is chosen disproportionately by candidates who selected it deliberately for its compact syllabus after research, often on a second or third attempt — a more experienced and more strategic population. History is chosen heavily by first-timers with a general interest and by candidates who assume the GS overlap will carry them. The rates are measuring the populations.

Denominator instability. Where a subject has a few hundred takers, the rate moves several percentage points on the outcomes of a handful of individuals, and a figure quoted from one year may not survive the next.

Ecosystem confounding. Optionals with strong established teaching produce better-guided candidates, which raises the observed rate without saying anything about the subject's inherent scoring. That is a fact about the coaching available to you, and it should be assessed directly under the availability test rather than inferred from an aggregate.

Ignored variance. The variation between candidates within any optional is far larger than the variation between optionals. A well-prepared History candidate outscores a poorly prepared Anthropology candidate reliably, which means the aggregate carries almost no information about the individual decision.

What the data does support: no optional is reliably unscorable, and selections occur across every one of the 48. That is the entire usable content of every success-rate table published.

Question 3

A candidate with a physics degree, currently in a research job, shortlists Physics, Philosophy and Public Administration. Apply the six tests.

Accepted Answer

**Interest.** Physics is their working subject and the honest question is whether they want to spend two more years in it — for some this is comfort and for others it is exhaustion, and only the candidate knows. Philosophy is a start from zero but conceptually adjacent to how a physicist is trained to think, and candidates from mathematical backgrounds frequently take to it. Public Administration has the weakest intrinsic pull for this profile.

**Availability.** Philosophy and Public Administration both have established material and teaching. Physics has fewer candidates and correspondingly thinner guidance on answer conventions, which is a real cost even for someone who knows the content thoroughly.

**Background.** Physics is a genuine head start and the strongest on this list. But note the qualification that applies to every technical optional: the syllabus spans the whole subject, and a specialist in one area is partly starting fresh in the others.

**Syllabus cost.** Philosophy is the most compact of the three and the most completely revisable — its Western and Indian philosophy sections are finite and well defined. Public Administration is moderate. Physics is large and, importantly, requires problem practice rather than reading, which is less interruptible time.

**GS overlap.** Public Administration overlaps GS2 governance and GS4 ethics substantially. Philosophy has a genuine and underrated overlap with GS4's ethics content and real Essay value. Physics has none.

**Depth required.** Physics demands the most and tolerates a gap in study the least; Philosophy demands sustained conceptual work but is forgiving of interruption; Public Administration is the least demanding and, relatedly, the most crowded.

**Conclusion.** Philosophy or Physics, decided on test one. If the candidate still enjoys physics, the background advantage is large enough to outweigh the absent overlap and the thin guidance. If they are tired of it, Philosophy is the better fit: compact, revisable, adjacent to their trained habits of thought, and with real GS4 and Essay return. Public Administration would be chosen only for the overlap, which is choosing on the weakest of the six criteria.

Question 4

Rank PSIR, Sociology, Geography, History and Public Administration by genuine GS overlap, and state precisely what transfers and what does not in each.

Accepted Answer

**1. PSIR — the largest genuine overlap.** Transfers: the whole of GS2. Indian government and politics, constitutional provisions, comparative politics, and international relations are directly examined there, and optional-level depth visibly improves those answers. Essay value is real for governance and IR topics. Does not transfer: the political theory half of Paper I — the thinkers, ideologies and conceptual analysis — which has no GS counterpart and is a substantial body of unfamiliar work that candidates consistently under-estimate.

**2. Public Administration — close second and more even.** Transfers: GS2 governance almost wholly, and a good deal of GS4, where administrative ethics and accountability frameworks are directly usable. Paper II is close to GS2's administrative content. Does not transfer: the organisational theory and public administration theory in Paper I, which is a distinct academic vocabulary.

**3. Sociology.** Transfers: GS1's Indian society section substantially, GS2's social justice content, and genuine Essay value since sociological framing works directly on Section B topics. Does not transfer: Paper I's theory and thinkers, and the research methodology unit, both of which are new work.

**4. Geography.** Transfers: GS1's geography section and parts of GS3's environment and disaster content. Does not transfer, and this is the important part: physical geography at optional depth, cartography, and the map work go far beyond anything GS requires, and GS geography questions are answerable comfortably without optional preparation. The overlap is real and shallower than its reputation.

**5. History — the most over-claimed on the list.** Transfers: nominally, GS1's history sections. In practice the transfer is weak, because the optional demands historiography, source criticism and world history at a depth GS1 never asks for, while GS1's history questions can be answered from standard general reading that every candidate does anyway. The overlap is in topic names rather than in required treatment.

The general rule this ranking illustrates: overlap should be assessed by comparing the *treatment required*, not by matching syllabus headings. Two syllabi can share a word and demand entirely different work.

Question 5

Three candidates want to switch optionals. Advise each. (i) Scored 240/500 in Geography on a first attempt, feels the subject is unscoring. (ii) Cannot make themselves open the Sociology books after eight months. (iii) Took Medical Science, is a doctor, but finds no one to evaluate their answers.

Accepted Answer

**(i) Do not switch.** A 240 on a first attempt diagnoses preparation depth and answer-writing convention, not subject fit, and the belief that a subject is 'unscoring' is almost always the survivorship illusion running in reverse. Switching restarts the depth clock — four to six months minimum — while leaving the actual cause untreated, which is why candidates who switch on this basis so often score similarly in the new subject and conclude that the second one was unscoring too. The productive response is to obtain the previous year's paper, write full answers under time, and have them evaluated by someone who has scored well in Geography. The likely findings are unpractised map work, insufficient diagram use, and generic answers where the paper asked for specific regional or process detail — all of which are fixable inside one cycle without losing the eight months already invested.

**(ii) Switch, decisively.** This is a failure of test one, and test-one failures are not solved by effort or discipline. Eight months of not being able to open the books is not a motivation problem to be pushed through; it is information about fit, and the next fourteen months will go the same way. The switch costs four to six months for a comparable humanities subject, which is recoverable, whereas continuing costs a cycle in which the optional is never properly prepared. Choose the replacement by running all six tests properly this time — the original choice was probably made on overlap or on a recommendation.

**(iii) Do not switch — solve the availability problem instead.** The background advantage here is enormous and would be thrown away. But the problem is real: evaluation is the mechanism by which answer conventions are learned, and a subject with few takers has thin correction ecosystems. Practical routes: find candidates who have written Medical Science recently through subject forums or alumni networks; work from previous years' papers and the marks pattern rather than from model answers; and self-evaluate against a structural checklist rather than against content, since content is the part this candidate does not need help with. If after genuine effort no evaluation is reachable at all, that is a test-two failure and a switch becomes defensible — but it is the last resort, not the first response.

Question 6

Explain why a short syllabus is an advantage in a way that has nothing to do with the subject being easier.

Accepted Answer

The advantage is entirely about **complete revision**, and it operates through the way exam performance actually degrades.

An optional paper asks questions across the whole syllabus, and a candidate answers from whatever they can recall on the day. Recall is not uniform: material revised recently and repeatedly is available under pressure, and material read once eight months ago is not, regardless of how well it was understood at the time. The binding constraint on an optional score is therefore rarely comprehension — most candidates understand most of their syllabus — but the proportion of it that is retrievable in the hall.

A syllabus that can be traversed completely in a fortnight can be revised three or four times in the run-up to Mains, which puts the entire subject in retrievable condition. A syllabus that takes six weeks to traverse cannot be revised completely even once in the same window, so the candidate enters the paper with part of the subject in retrievable condition and part in the state of having been understood some time ago. When a question falls in the second part, the answer is written from partial recall, and the resulting unevenness is what candidates describe afterwards as bad luck with the paper.

This explains an observation that otherwise looks odd: candidates with compact optionals report more *consistent* scores across attempts rather than higher peaks. Compactness does not raise the ceiling. It raises the floor, by removing the possibility of being asked about the part you last saw in March.

The corollary is practical: if you take a long-syllabus optional, the revision artefact — a compressed set of notes traversable in a fortnight — is not an optional nicety but the thing that makes the choice survivable, and it must be built during the first pass rather than attempted afterwards.

Question 7

A working candidate with a commerce degree, two attempts remaining, currently prepares Public Administration and scores modestly. They are considering Commerce and Accountancy. Advise.

Accepted Answer

This one turns on distinguishing two questions that the candidate has probably fused: whether Public Administration is failing them, and whether Commerce and Accountancy would serve them better. Both need separate answers.

**Is Public Administration failing?** Run the diagnosis before the decision. Public Administration is among the most crowded optionals, and crowding has a specific consequence: with a large number of well-prepared candidates writing similar answers from the same standard sources, differentiation is hard and average scores compress. A modest score there is therefore weaker evidence of poor fit than the same score in a thinly taken subject would be, and the usual remedy — greater specificity, case material, and administrative examples that other scripts do not carry — is available without a switch.

**Would Commerce and Accountancy serve better?** The background advantage is real and unusually transferable here, more so than an engineering degree transfers to an engineering optional, because the commerce syllabus maps closely onto what a commerce graduate actually studied. Two further features suit a working candidate specifically: the answers have a substantial determinate component — accounting treatments, standards, computations — where correctness is assessable rather than impressionistic, which rewards precision over rhetorical breadth; and the subject is taken by far fewer candidates, so the compression effect that afflicts Public Administration is weaker.

**The countervailing costs.** No GS overlap at all, against Public Administration's substantial GS2 and GS4 return — so the same hours now serve one paper block instead of three. Thinner teaching and evaluation ecosystems, which must be checked concretely under test two before committing. And Paper II's law and standards content changes over time, so material must be current.

**Advice.** With two attempts remaining and a working constraint, the switch is defensible and probably right — provided test two is verified first. Confirm you can obtain current material and find someone to evaluate answers; if you can, switch now rather than after the next attempt, since the four to six month cost is affordable once and not twice. If evaluation proves unreachable, stay with Public Administration and attack the specificity problem directly, which is the actual cause of a modest score in a crowded optional.

Question 8

Design a full-cycle optional preparation schedule for a candidate starting fourteen months before Mains, and justify each sequencing choice.

Accepted Answer

**Months 1–5: first complete pass.** Cover the entire syllabus once, at moderate depth, without stopping to perfect any section. The single objective is that no part of the subject remains unseen. Build the compressed revision artefact *as you go* — a page or two per syllabus unit, in your own words — because it cannot be built retrospectively without re-reading everything, which is what makes long-syllabus optionals fail.

*Why:* the most damaging pattern in optional preparation is deep study of the first third and no exposure to the last third. Depth is added on the second pass; coverage cannot be added at the end.

**Month 3 onward, in parallel: answer-writing begins.** One or two full answers a week on material already covered, timed, evaluated by someone competent in the subject.

*Why:* optional answer conventions differ from GS conventions and from each other — what counts as a good Sociology answer is not what counts as a good Geography answer — and they are learned only by writing and correction. Starting at month eight leaves no time to internalise the corrections, and the candidate writes their first genuinely well-formed answer in the exam hall.

**Months 6–8: second pass with previous years' papers alongside.** Read each syllabus unit again against the questions actually asked from it over the last decade. This is where depth is added, and it is added selectively — to what is examined rather than to what is interesting.

*Why:* the previous years' papers are the only reliable statement of what the subject means in practice, and reading them after the first pass rather than before means you can actually understand what they are asking.

**Prelims window: optional paused, revision artefact only.** Twenty minutes a day traversing the notes, no new material.

*Why:* the cost of a complete cold stop is a month of recovery afterwards, and the cost of continuing seriously is a weaker Prelims. Light maintenance avoids both.

**Post-Prelims to Mains: writing and revision only, no acquisition.** Three to four full answers a week, complete traversals of the artefact at decreasing intervals, and one full-length paper under exam conditions a fortnight before.

*Why:* candidates who enter this window still acquiring content almost never recover, because the window's real work — converting understanding into retrievable, well-formed answers — takes all of it.

**The one test to run.** A month before Mains, verify the claim your artefact rests on: can you actually traverse the whole subject in a fortnight? If not, the artefact is too long, and cutting it then is better than discovering the problem in the final week.
