**Myrdal** rejects concealment as impossible. **Qualitative methods** — participant observation, unstructured interview, case study, ethnography — pursue depth, meaning and process in small numbers of cases. Their strengths are access to actors' own understandings, the ability to discover categories the researcher had not anticipated, and the capacity to observe conduct that respondents would not report or could not articulate. **Triangulation** is the mature resolution: approaching one problem through multiple methods so that each compensates for the others' limitations. Indian sociology's strongest work has generally combined survey material with sustained fieldwork — village studies producing the depth and census or survey material supplying the scale — and the methodological debate between the two traditions is now largely settled in favour of complementarity rather than allegiance.

Question 7

Explain the difference between reliability and validity with examples, and state why the distinction matters. (150 words)

**Reliability** is consistency: the same instrument applied again, by the same or another researcher, yields the same result. **Validity** is accuracy: the instrument measures what it claims to measure.

The two are **independent**, which is the point most often missed. A literacy test administered in a language the respondent does not read will produce the same result every time it is applied — perfectly reliable, and entirely invalid as a measure of literacy. Conversely, an unstructured interview may capture exactly the phenomenon of interest while producing different results with different interviewers — valid in conception, unreliable in execution.

The distinction matters because reliability is easier to achieve and to demonstrate, so research designs drift toward it. Standardised instruments, closed questions and administrative records all raise reliability, and each can lower validity by substituting what is easily measured for what was meant. Official crime statistics are highly reliable records of police recording practice and a poor measure of crime.

Question 8

Examine Marx's concept of alienation and assess its relevance to contemporary work.

Alienation in Marx is an **objective condition arising from the relations of production**, not a psychological state — a distinction that governs the whole answer, since a worker may report satisfaction and be alienated, and the concept would be unfalsifiable if it meant a feeling.

Its basis is his conception of **species-being**: what distinguishes human beings is free, conscious, purposive production — the capacity to form an object in imagination and then realise it in the world. Labour is therefore not merely a means of subsistence but the activity through which human nature is expressed. Under capitalist relations, in which the worker sells labour power and the product belongs to another, that activity is inverted.

**Four dimensions** follow. From the **product**: what the worker creates belongs to another and confronts them as an alien power, so that the more they produce the more the hostile world of objects grows. From the **process**: work is externally determined in its pace, content and purpose, so it is not an expression of the worker's own will but a means to survival, and the worker is at home only outside work. From **species-being**: the capacity that defines the human is reduced to a means to physical existence, inverting the relation between animal and human functions. From **fellow humans**: the relation among workers becomes competitive and instrumental, and between worker and owner antagonistic, so that the social character of production is experienced as isolation.

**Distinctions to keep clear.** Alienation is not anomie: Durkheim's concept describes normlessness in the social order and can be remedied by regulation, whereas Marx's requires transformation of property relations. Nor is it job dissatisfaction: Blauner's later attempt to operationalise it as powerlessness, meaninglessness, isolation and self-estrangement, measured by survey, converts an objective structural condition into a subjective attitude, which is why Marxists regard that research programme as a domestication of the concept.

**Contemporary relevance** is strong and requires qualification. The platform and gig economy reproduces the four dimensions with unusual clarity: the worker owns the vehicle and controls neither the price nor the allocation of work; the labour process is directed by an algorithm whose reasoning is not disclosed, which is external determination in an unusually literal form; classification as an independent contractor removes the protections that partially offset the relation; and atomisation prevents the collective identity that the factory produced. Automation and detailed division in service work extend the process-dimension into occupations Marx did not anticipate.

The qualifications are genuine. Rising real incomes, shorter hours and legal protection have altered the conditions under which alienation operates without altering the property relation it derives from — which on Marx's own terms is exactly what should be expected, and is why the concept survives the improvement in material conditions that was supposed to refute it. What has weakened is the political conclusion rather than the analysis: alienation was to generate class consciousness, and consumption, credit and the fragmentation of the workforce have proved effective at preventing that link from closing.

**Assessment.** As a description of the structural position of wage labour the concept remains powerful and unusually well suited to contemporary platform work. As a prediction about political consequence it has not been vindicated, and the gap between the two is where the interesting sociological work now sits.

Question 9

Discuss Durkheim's treatment of the division of labour and its pathological forms.

Durkheim's question in *The Division of Labour in Society* inverts the one his contemporaries asked. Specialisation was widely feared as a solvent of social cohesion; he argued that it is a **source of solidarity**, and that what changes with it is the *form* solidarity takes rather than its quantity.

**Mechanical solidarity** characterises societies with little differentiation. Cohesion rests on **likeness**: members share beliefs, sentiments and ways of life, the collective conscience is strong, extensive and religious in character, and individuality is minimal. Its legal expression is **repressive law**, which punishes offences against shared sentiments, and the intensity of punishment measures the strength of the collective conscience rather than the harm done.

**Organic solidarity** characterises differentiated societies. Cohesion rests on **interdependence**: specialisation makes members mutually necessary, since none can supply their own needs. The collective conscience becomes weaker, more abstract and more secular, and it makes room for individuality — which for Durkheim is not the enemy of solidarity but its modern product. Its legal expression is **restitutive law**, which restores relations rather than avenging violations, and the growth of contract, commercial and administrative law is the empirical evidence he offers.

**The methodological point** deserves stating: Durkheim uses law as an **external, observable index** of an internal state, precisely because his methodological rule requires social facts to be studied from outside. The argument is an application of his own programme.

**The pathological forms** are the part of the argument most often under-treated, and they matter because they show the theory is not an apology for modernity.

The **anomic division of labour** arises when specialisation outruns the development of the rules that should coordinate it. Functions become differentiated without the moral regulation that would make their interdependence experienced as such, and the result is conflict — his examples are industrial crises and the antagonism of labour and capital, both read as failures of regulation rather than as inherent to the economic form. This is the same mechanism as anomie in *Suicide*: desires and relations left unregulated produce disorder, and rapid change is dangerous because regulation adjusts more slowly than structure.

The **forced division of labour** arises when positions are allocated by inherited advantage rather than by natural aptitude. Organic solidarity requires that individuals occupy the roles they are suited to and experience the distribution as just; where external inequality determines placement — wealth, birth, inherited status — the interdependence is real but the sentiment that should accompany it is absent, and constraint substitutes for consent. Durkheim's remedy is the progressive elimination of inherited advantage, which makes his position considerably more critical than the conservative reading of him allows.

He adds a third, **inadequate coordination**, where specialised functions are insufficiently integrated and effort is wasted.

**Critique.** The evolutionary framework is questionable, since the two solidarity types coexist in all known societies rather than succeeding one another. The empirical claim about law has been contested, with historians noting extensive restitutive provision in societies Durkheim classified as mechanical. The account underestimates conflict, treating it as pathology rather than as structurally generated, which is the standard Marxist objection. And the causal argument — that increasing material and moral density drives specialisation — assigns population change an explanatory weight it may not bear.

**Assessment.** The lasting contribution is the demonstration that interdependence can produce solidarity without shared belief, which remains the strongest available account of how large heterogeneous societies cohere. The pathological forms are what keep it from being a functionalist apologia: Durkheim held that the division of labour produces solidarity only under conditions of adequate regulation and just allocation, and he did not think either obtained.

Examine Weber's ideal type of bureaucracy and its critiques.

Bureaucracy in Weber is the **organisational form of rational-legal authority**, and it must be located there before it can be assessed. His threefold typology asks on what grounds obedience is believed to be owed: **traditional** authority rests on the sanctity of immemorial custom, **charismatic** on devotion to the exceptional qualities of a person, and **rational-legal** on belief in the legality of enacted rules and in the right of those elevated under them to issue commands. Bureaucracy is what rational-legal authority looks like when institutionalised.

**The ideal type** specifies: a hierarchy of offices with defined jurisdictions; operation according to written rules; appointment on technical qualification rather than on birth, patronage or election; the office as a career, with fixed salary, tenure and promotion by seniority or merit; the separation of the office from the officeholder, so that the incumbent neither owns the position nor its means of administration; written documentation of acts; and impersonality in the application of rules.

It is essential to state that this is an **ideal type** — a deliberate, one-sided analytical construction used as a measuring rod, not a description of any actual bureaucracy and not an average of several. Answers that treat it as a description are answering a different question, and the misreading generates most of the weaker critiques.

**Weber's assessment** is technical, not moral. Bureaucracy is superior to other administrative forms in precision, speed, unambiguity, continuity, discretion and calculability — he compares its relation to earlier forms with that of machine production to non-mechanical production. But he was not an admirer. Rationalisation produces the **disenchantment of the world**, in which calculation displaces magic and mystery; the **iron cage** is his image for an order in which the efficiency of the form entraps those who operate it; and he feared that bureaucracy's indispensability would make it politically uncontrollable, since only bureaucrats possess the knowledge required to supervise bureaucrats. His concern with charismatic leadership in politics stems from this: he looked to it as a counterweight to bureaucratic domination.

**The critiques.**

**Merton** on the dysfunctions: rules that are means become ends in themselves, producing **goal displacement** and the trained incapacity of an official who applies procedure competently in a situation it does not fit. His ritualist adaptation is the personality type bureaucratic structure selects for.

**Gouldner** on the varieties: bureaucracy is not one thing, and his distinction between mock, representative and punishment-centred patterns showed that identical formal rules operate quite differently depending on whether they are jointly accepted, imposed by one party, or ignored by both.

**Blau** on the informal organisation: actual efficiency frequently depends on unofficial practices that depart from the rules, so the formal structure Weber described is not the mechanism by which the work is done.

**Selznick** on cooptation and the displacement of organisational goals under environmental pressure.

**Michels** on the iron law of oligarchy: organisation itself concentrates power in a leadership with distinct interests, so bureaucratisation is a threat to democracy within organisations, not merely to those they administer.

**Feminist critique**: impersonality and the career model presuppose an officeholder without domestic responsibility, so the form is gendered in its assumptions while appearing neutral.

**Contemporary critique**: post-bureaucratic and network organisational forms, and the new public management programme, argue that hierarchy and rule-following are ill-suited to environments requiring rapid adaptation.

**Assessment.** Most critiques attack the empirical adequacy of a construction that was never intended as description, which is why Weber's own framework absorbs them: departures from the ideal type are precisely what it exists to make visible and measurable. The critiques that genuinely bite are the political ones — Michels on oligarchy and Weber's own on uncontrollability — because they identify a consequence of the form rather than a deviation from it. For Indian material, the type remains the standard against which the persistence of particularism, patronage and personalised authority within formally rational structures is measured, which is exactly the analytical use it was built for.

Assess Merton's contribution as a corrective to classical functionalism.

Merton's significance lies less in founding a position than in repairing one, and each repair addresses a specific defect in the functionalism he inherited from Malinowski, Radcliffe-Brown and Parsons.

**Against grand theory: middle-range theory.** Parsons attempted a general theory of the social system before the intermediate empirical work had been done, producing a scheme of great abstraction and little testability. Merton argued that sociology should build theories close enough to observation to generate testable propositions — theories of reference groups, of deviance, of bureaucratic personality — and that a general theory, if it comes, will be consolidated from these rather than announced in advance. This is a claim about the discipline's stage of development, not a rejection of theory.

**Against the three postulates.** Classical functionalism assumed the **functional unity** of society, that all parts work together harmoniously; **universal functionalism**, that every persisting element is functional; and **indispensability**, that each element is necessary and irreplaceable. Merton attacked all three. Unity is a variable to be investigated, not an assumption, and is plainly incomplete in complex differentiated societies. Universal functionalism cannot accommodate elements that persist while damaging the system, so he introduced **dysfunctions** — consequences that reduce adaptation — which is his most important single amendment, because it breaks the identification of persistence with benefit that made functionalism inherently conservative. Indispensability is replaced by **functional alternatives**: the same requirement can be met by different arrangements, which restores the possibility of change and of comparison.

**Manifest and latent functions.** The distinction between consequences that are intended and recognised and those that are neither is Merton's most transferable contribution. It supplies the discipline's characteristic surprise — practices persisting for reasons participants do not state — and it defines a task that only a sociologist can perform, since manifest functions are available to any competent participant. His analysis of the political machine, whose latent function was to provide services and channels of mobility that formal structures did not, remains the standard illustration.

**Net balance.** He further insisted that the question is not whether an item is functional or dysfunctional but its **net balance of consequences for specified units** — an arrangement may be functional for one group and dysfunctional for another, which introduces conflict of interest into a framework that had assumed a single system with common needs.

**Strain theory.** His account of deviance applies the corrected framework: deviance is normal rather than pathological, arising from a disjunction between culturally prescribed goals and legitimate institutional means. The five adaptations — conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism, rebellion — locate deviance in social structure rather than in individual pathology, and the theory's power is that it explains why deviance concentrates where opportunity is restricted while aspiration is universalised.

**Reference group theory and relative deprivation** complete the corrective by supplying a mechanism at the level of the actor: people evaluate their situation against groups they may not belong to, so dissatisfaction tracks comparison rather than absolute condition. This is why objective improvement can coexist with rising discontent.

**Limits.** The critiques of functionalism that survive Merton are the ones directed at its explanatory form rather than its assumptions. Explaining an institution by its consequences remains teleological unless a mechanism connects the consequence back to the institution's persistence, and Merton does not supply one. The framework still tends to take the system's boundaries and requirements as given, which is precisely what conflict theory disputes. And latent function analysis, while illuminating, is difficult to falsify — a determined analyst can find a latent function for almost anything.

**Assessment.** Merton converted functionalism from a doctrine into a method. Dysfunctions, functional alternatives and net balance removed its conservative entailments; middle-range theory made it researchable; and the manifest–latent distinction gave it a question no rival perspective asks as well. That is why his concepts survive in general sociological use long after the functionalist programme itself was abandoned.

Explain Mead's account of the emergence of self and identity.

Mead's problem is how a biological organism becomes a **self** — an entity that can be an object to itself, reflect on its own conduct, and act toward itself as others do. His answer is that the self is not given but **socially produced in interaction**, which is the foundational claim of symbolic interactionism.

**The precondition is significant symbols.** Human communication uses gestures whose meaning is shared, so that the gesture calls out in the maker the same response it calls out in the receiver. This is what permits **role-taking**: the ability to anticipate another's response and thereby to view one's own conduct from their standpoint. Without shared symbols there is a conversation of gestures, as among animals, but no self.

**The self has two phases.** The **"I"** is the spontaneous, impulsive, unpredictable response of the organism to the situation — the source of novelty, creativity and departure from expectation, and knowable only retrospectively, since we learn what the "I" did after it has acted. The **"Me"** is the organised set of attitudes of others that the individual has internalised — the socially formed object of self-reflection, the part that anticipates how conduct will be received. The self is the ongoing **conversation between them**, which is why Mead's actor is neither determined by society nor free of it: every act is an "I" response to a situation defined by the "Me", and the response then becomes part of the "Me" for the next act.

**Development proceeds in stages.** In the **preparatory** phase the infant imitates without understanding. In the **play stage** the child takes the role of one **particular other** at a time — playing at being a parent, a shopkeeper, a teacher — and can therefore see itself from one standpoint. In the **game stage** the child must take the roles of **all participants simultaneously** and grasp how they interlock: playing one position in a team game requires anticipating what every other player will do and how the rules connect them. This is a qualitative advance, because it requires an organised system of attitudes rather than a single perspective.

The outcome is the **generalised other** — the attitude of the community as a whole, internalised as the standpoint from which the person judges themselves. Conscience, in Mead's account, is the generalised other speaking, and self-control is possible because the individual carries the community's perspective inside the act.

**Significance and critique.** Blumer's three premises formalise the perspective: people act toward things on the basis of the meanings those things have for them; meanings arise in social interaction; and meanings are handled and modified through an interpretive process. The approach supplies the microsociological foundation that Marx, Durkheim, Weber and Parsons largely lack, and it underwrites later work on labelling, stigma and the presentation of self.

The standard criticisms are that it neglects structure, power and material constraint — interaction is treated as though participants met on equal terms — and that its concepts, particularly the "I", are difficult to operationalise. A family relationship is affective; a professional consultation is affectively neutral, and the professional norm requiring emotional detachment is what makes the service reliable.

**Self-orientation versus collectivity-orientation** — whether the actor pursues private interest or the interest of the collectivity. Business is organised on the first, public office on the second, and the corruption of the second into the first is precisely what administrative ethics exists to prevent.

**Universalism versus particularism** — whether others are treated according to general criteria applying to all, or according to their particular relationship to the actor. Bureaucratic and legal orders are universalistic; kinship and caste obligations are particularistic.

**Ascription versus achievement** — whether others are judged by qualities they possess by birth or by what they have accomplished. Parsons's original terms were quality and performance.

**Specificity versus diffuseness** — whether the relationship is confined to a defined purpose or extends across many aspects of life. A relationship with a bank is specific; with a spouse or a village patron it is diffuse.

**As a theory of modernisation.** Traditional societies cluster on the first term of most pairs — affective, collectivity-oriented, particularistic, ascriptive, diffuse — and modern societies on the second. The scheme therefore doubles as a statement of what modernisation consists of, and it was used extensively in that role in mid-century development sociology.

**Usefulness.** The scheme is genuinely powerful for Indian material because it names the tension precisely rather than moralising about it. The persistence of particularism and ascription within formally universalistic and achievement-based institutions is the analytical core of a great many Indian sociological questions — caste in bureaucratic recruitment, kinship in political parties, the jajmani relationship's diffuseness against the specificity of a wage contract. It also clarifies role conflict: an official who is simultaneously a kinsman faces incompatible pattern-variable demands, and the conflict is structural rather than personal.

**Critique.** The dichotomies are ideal-typical and real relationships mix them, so classification is often forced. The modernisation reading is evolutionary and unilinear, assuming a single trajectory that comparative evidence does not support — East Asian industrialisation combined universalistic economic institutions with strongly particularistic social ones. The scheme describes orientations without explaining what changes them, and it says nothing about power. And like the rest of Parsons's framework it is pitched at a level of abstraction that generates description rather than testable propositions.

**Assessment.** The pattern variables survive as a **descriptive vocabulary** rather than as a theory of change. Used to characterise a relationship or to locate a role conflict they are precise and economical; used to predict a society's trajectory they carry assumptions that the evidence has not supported.

Compare Marx, Durkheim and Weber on the nature and consequences of modern industrial society.

All three took modern industrial society as their object and reached different diagnoses because they located its defining feature differently — in the property relation, in the division of labour, and in rationalisation respectively.

**Marx: the property relation.** What defines the modern epoch is the capitalist mode of production, in which the direct producer is separated from the means of production and sells labour power. The consequence is **alienation** in its four dimensions, and **class antagonism** between those who own and those who do not. The mechanism of change is the developing contradiction between forces and relations of production; the trajectory is toward polarisation, the development of class consciousness, and transformation. The pathology is inherent in the property relation and is not remediable within it.

**Durkheim: the division of labour.** What defines modernity is the extent of specialisation, and its normal consequence is a change in the form of solidarity from mechanical to organic — cohesion by interdependence rather than by likeness. The consequence he feared is not specialisation itself but its **pathological forms**: anomie, where regulation has not developed to match the pace of differentiation, and the forced division of labour, where positions are allocated by inherited advantage rather than aptitude. The mechanism of change is increasing material and moral density; the trajectory is toward a differentiated society held together by interdependence and by a moral individualism that is itself the modern collective conscience. The pathologies are **remediable by regulation** — occupational groups, inheritance reform — which is the decisive difference from Marx.

**Weber: rationalisation.** What defines modernity is the extension of instrumental rationality across every institutional sphere — the substitution of calculation for tradition and for value-commitment. Its organisational expression is **bureaucracy**, its cultural consequence the **disenchantment of the world**, and its existential consequence the **iron cage**, in which the efficiency of the created forms entraps those who inhabit them. The mechanism is not economic determination but a multi-causal process in which religious ideas played a documented part, which is the point of the Protestant Ethic thesis. The trajectory is toward increasing bureaucratic domination, and Weber saw **no structural remedy** — his hopes rested on charismatic political leadership as a counterweight, which is a considerably bleaker position than either of the others.

**Points of genuine disagreement.** On **causation**: Marx gives the material base explanatory primacy; Weber insists on multiple causes and demonstrates that ideas can be causally effective; Durkheim explains social facts by other social facts, chiefly by density and structure. On **the diagnosis of the modern malaise**: alienation is a property of the production relation, anomie of the regulatory order, and disenchantment of the cultural form of rationality; the three are different conditions with different remedies. **Convergences.** All three treat modern society as producing a distinctive form of human dislocation, and all three reject the individualistic explanations then dominant. All three, importantly, are theorists of **transition** rather than of a static order, which is why their questions survived the specific answers they gave.

**Assessment for Indian material.** Weber's multi-dimensional stratification travels best, because caste, class and political power in India visibly vary independently — the observation Beteille built on. Durkheim's account of anomie under rapid change fits periods of accelerated transformation such as the Green Revolution districts. Marx's framework remains the sharpest instrument for agrarian and industrial class analysis, and the Indian mode of production debate is a direct descendant of it. The three are best treated as complementary lenses on a common object rather than as competing systems, and an answer that says so with the reasons is stronger than one that adjudicates between them.

**Probability sampling** gives every unit in the population a known, non-zero chance of selection, which is what permits statistical inference to the population with a calculable margin of error. Its forms are simple random, systematic, stratified — which divides the population into homogeneous strata and samples within each, improving precision where the strata differ — cluster, and multi-stage designs used where no complete list of individuals exists but lists of areas do.

**Non-probability sampling** does not, so inference to the population is not statistically warranted. Its forms are purposive, where cases are chosen for their relevance to the question; quota, which fills pre-set category targets by convenience; snowball, where respondents recruit others; and convenience.

**Defensibility follows from purpose.** Probability designs are required where the claim is about distribution or incidence in a population. Non-probability designs are defensible where no sampling frame exists, where the population is hidden or stigmatised so that only referral chains reach it, or where the objective is depth and theory-generation rather than generalisation — which is the standard position in qualitative work.
