**The P-wave shadow zone** between roughly 103 and 143 degrees arises differently: P-waves are not blocked but are **refracted** sharply at the core-mantle boundary, where velocity drops abruptly, and are bent away from that annulus.

**Velocity discontinuities** locate the internal boundaries: the **Mohorovicic** discontinuity between crust and mantle, the **Gutenberg** discontinuity between mantle and core, and the **Lehmann** discontinuity between liquid outer and solid inner core — the last identified because faint P-wave arrivals within the shadow zone require refraction through a solid inner region.

Compensation therefore occurs at variable depth.

**Pratt's model** assumes a **uniform depth of compensation** and **variable density**. Every column has the same mass above a common level, so a mountain stands high because the material beneath it is **less dense**, not because it extends deeper.

**Assessment.** Neither is sufficient alone, and the modern view combines them: both thickness and density vary, and compensation is **regional rather than local**, because the lithosphere has flexural rigidity and distributes loads laterally rather than each column floating independently.

**The observable consequence** is isostatic adjustment — post-glacial rebound after deglaciation, subsidence under sediment loading, and continued uplift of an eroding range.

And **palaeoclimatic** evidence: glacial deposits with consistent striation directions in present tropical regions, and coal-forming vegetation in high latitudes, implying the landmasses were elsewhere.

**Sea-floor spreading evidence** supplied the mechanism Wegener lacked. **Symmetrical magnetic striping** either side of mid-ocean ridges, recording successive field reversals as crust cooled — the single most decisive observation. **Age of the ocean floor** increasing systematically away from ridges, with no oceanic crust anywhere approaching the age of continental crust. **Sediment thickness** increasing away from ridges, consistent with older floor having accumulated more. And **heat flow** maxima at ridges.

**Palaeomagnetic** evidence independently: apparent polar wander paths derived from different continents diverge, which is impossible unless the continents have moved relative to one another.

*Sequence:* **Youth** — narrow V-shaped valleys, steep gradients, rapids and waterfalls, extensive undissected interfluves, valley deepening dominant. **Maturity** — maximum relief, graded main streams, interfluves fully dissected, valley widening replacing deepening. **Old age** — subdued relief, broad open valleys, wide floodplains with free meandering, isolated residual **monadnocks**, tending to a **peneplain** near base level. **Rejuvenation** by uplift or base-level fall restarts the cycle, producing knick points, incised meanders and paired river terraces.

*Critique:* the uplift-then-stillstand assumption is unrealistic, since uplift and erosion are generally concurrent; the model is deductive, not derived from field measurement; complete peneplains are rare in the record; the treatment of slope decline is asserted rather than demonstrated; and the model was developed in humid temperate conditions and travels poorly to arid, glacial and tropical environments.

**Penck's model.** *Assumption:* uplift and erosion are **concurrent**, so the **ratio of their rates** controls the resulting form.

Coalescing pediments form a **pediplain**, above which resistant residuals stand as **inselbergs** and **bornhardts**.

*Critique:* the claim to universality is contested, since parallel retreat is best supported in semi-arid settings with resistant caprock; pediment formation processes are still debated; and it under-attends the role of climate change through the development period.

**Comparative assessment.**

On **slope development**: Davis says slopes decline in angle; Penck and King say they retreat in parallel. Field evidence supports parallel retreat in many settings and decline in others, which suggests the process depends on lithology and climate rather than being universal.

On **end product**: peneplain, piedmonttreppe and pediplain respectively — and the pediplain has the better field support.

On **tectonics**: Davis separates it from erosion, Penck couples them, King is largely agnostic. Penck's coupling is now the accepted position.

**The modern position** supersedes all three: **process-response** geomorphology emphasises measured process rates, thresholds and equilibrium concepts over cyclic sequences, and treats climate, lithology and tectonic setting as producing **different evolutionary paths** rather than one cycle with local variants. Davis's vocabulary survives as description; Penck's rate-ratio insight survives as principle; King's parallel retreat survives as one of several slope-development modes.

Question 5

Explain the earth's heat budget and its role in driving atmospheric and oceanic circulation.

Accepted Answer

**The budget.** The earth's temperature is maintained because **incoming shortwave solar radiation** balances **outgoing longwave terrestrial radiation** at the top of the atmosphere over the long run.

Of incoming shortwave radiation, a portion is **reflected** — by cloud tops, by scattering in the atmosphere, and by the surface — constituting the **planetary albedo**. A portion is **absorbed directly by the atmosphere**, principally by ozone in the ultraviolet and by water vapour in the near infrared. The remainder reaches and is **absorbed by the surface**, which is where most solar heating of the earth system occurs.

The surface, being far cooler than the sun, re-radiates in the **longwave**. Atmospheric gases — water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and others — absorb longwave radiation far more effectively than they absorb shortwave, and re-emit in all directions including downward. This is the **greenhouse effect**, and it raises the mean surface temperature substantially above the value that would obtain without an atmosphere. Heat also leaves the surface by **conduction and convection** as sensible heat and by **evaporation** as latent heat, the latter being released aloft on condensation.

**The latitudinal imbalance, which is the point of the topic.** The budget balances globally and **not by latitude**. Low latitudes receive more solar radiation than they emit — a **surplus** — because the sun's rays strike at a high angle, traverse less atmosphere and are concentrated over a smaller area. High latitudes emit more than they receive — a **deficit** — because of low sun angle, long atmospheric path, high albedo of snow and ice, and prolonged winter darkness. The crossover occurs at roughly 38 degrees in each hemisphere.

If nothing transferred energy between them, the tropics would heat without limit and the poles cool without limit. Since they do not, **poleward energy transfer must occur**, and it is this transfer that constitutes the general circulation.

**How the transfer occurs.**

**The atmosphere** carries roughly half to two-thirds of the total. In low latitudes the **Hadley cell** transports it as a direct thermal circulation — heated air rising at the equator, moving poleward aloft, subsiding at the subtropics. In mid-latitudes, where a single overturning cell is dynamically unstable, transfer occurs principally through **transient eddies** — the travelling temperate cyclones and anticyclones — which move warm air poleward and cold air equatorward along the polar front. A substantial share of atmospheric transport is as **latent heat**: water evaporated in the tropics and condensed at higher latitudes carries energy without a temperature difference.

**The oceans** carry the remainder, principally through the **warm western boundary currents** flowing poleward on the western margins of ocean basins and the return of cooler water. The **thermohaline circulation** transports heat on much longer timescales through deep overturning.

**What this explains.**

The existence and location of the **pressure belts** — equatorial low from ascent, subtropical high from Hadley cell subsidence, subpolar low from convergence at the polar front, polar high from subsidence.

The **planetary wind systems** as the surface limbs of these cells, deflected by the Coriolis effect.

The **jet streams**, which form where the meridional temperature gradient is steepest and are therefore strongest in winter.

The **seasonal migration** of the whole system with the overhead sun, which produces the Mediterranean climate's seasonal reversal and the monsoon's onset.

And the **ocean gyres**, driven by the wind systems and constrained by continental boundaries.

**Assessment.** The heat budget is not a topic alongside circulation but its explanation: every feature of the general circulation is a consequence of the requirement to move energy from a surplus zone to a deficit zone. An answer on circulation that omits this connection has described a pattern without explaining why it exists.

Question 6

Compare temperate and tropical cyclones.

Accepted Answer

The two are fundamentally different systems that share only a name, and the comparison should be organised by **energy source**, from which almost every other difference follows.

**Origin and energy source.** **Temperate cyclones** form along the **polar front**, where warm tropical and cold polar air masses meet, and derive their energy from the **horizontal temperature contrast** between the two air masses — the potential energy of a baroclinic atmosphere converted to kinetic energy. **Tropical cyclones** form over warm oceans within a **single homogeneous air mass** and derive their energy from **latent heat release** on condensation.

Everything else follows from this.

**Latitude.** Temperate cyclones occur between roughly 35 and 65 degrees, where the front exists. Tropical cyclones occur between about 5 and 30 degrees — poleward of the Coriolis-free equatorial belt and equatorward of waters too cool to sustain the mechanism.

**Fronts.** Temperate cyclones **have fronts** by definition, since they form on one. Tropical cyclones have **none**, since there is no air mass contrast.

**Size and intensity.** Temperate cyclones are **large** — frequently well over a thousand kilometres across — with **moderate** pressure gradients and wind speeds. Tropical cyclones are **smaller** but far more **intense**, with steep pressure gradients and much higher winds concentrated near the centre.

**Structure.** Temperate cyclones are **asymmetric**, with distinct warm and cold sectors and a characteristic sequence of weather as the fronts pass. Tropical cyclones are **symmetric** about a calm **eye**, with the most intense conditions in the **eye wall** and rainfall in spiral bands.

**Vertical structure.** Temperate cyclones have a **cold core** and **tilt** westward with height. Tropical cyclones have a **warm core** — the latent heat release warms the column — and are **vertically upright**, which is why vertical wind shear destroys them.

**Season.** Temperate cyclones are most frequent and vigorous in **winter**, when the thermal contrast across the polar front is greatest. Tropical cyclones occur in **late summer and autumn**, when sea surface temperatures peak.

**Movement.** Temperate cyclones travel **eastward** with the westerlies. Tropical cyclones travel **westward and poleward** with the trades, recurving into the westerlies at higher latitudes.

**Duration and decay.** Temperate cyclones last several days to a week and decay by **occlusion**, when the cold front overtakes the warm front and lifts the warm sector clear of the surface, removing the temperature contrast. Tropical cyclones last days to a fortnight and decay on **landfall or over cool water**, when the energy source is removed.

**Weather produced.** Temperate cyclones produce a sequence — high cirrus, thickening stratiform cloud and prolonged light rain ahead of the warm front; overcast with drizzle in the warm sector; then intense short-duration convective rain and a sharp temperature drop at the cold front. Tropical cyclones produce sustained torrential rain, destructive winds, and — usually the greatest killer — **storm surge**.

**Hazard profile.** Temperate cyclone damage is chiefly from wind and flooding over a wide area. Tropical cyclone mortality is dominated by **storm surge**, whose magnitude depends on intensity, on shelf shallowness and on coastal configuration — which is why a funnel-shaped, shallow, densely populated deltaic coast experiences catastrophic losses from a storm that would cause moderate damage elsewhere.

**One convergence worth noting:** a tropical cyclone recurving into the mid-latitudes may undergo **extratropical transition**, acquiring fronts and an asymmetric structure while retaining strong winds — which shows that the distinction is one of mechanism rather than of category.

The two classifications differ in what they measure, and the difference — **raw values against effectiveness** — is the substance of the comparison.

**Koppen's classification.**

*Basis:* **empirical and quantitative**, using monthly and annual **temperature and precipitation** values, with threshold values chosen deliberately to correspond to **vegetation boundaries** — the classification is genetic in intent and empirical in method.

*Structure:* five major groups. **A** tropical, all months above a temperature threshold; **B** dry, defined by a precipitation threshold that varies with temperature and with the seasonal distribution of rainfall; **C** warm temperate; **D** cold temperate; **E** polar. **H** for highland was added later. Second letters denote precipitation seasonality — f for no dry season, m monsoon, w dry winter, s dry summer — and third letters denote temperature refinements.

*Strengths:* **objective and reproducible** — two analysts with the same data produce the same classification. It uses **readily available data**, which is why it could be applied globally when few stations existed. Its boundaries **correspond well to observed vegetation**, which validates the threshold choices. And it is simple enough to be used and communicated widely, which is why it remains the standard.

*Limitations:* it uses only **two variables**, omitting wind, humidity, cloud cover, sunshine duration and evaporation. Its **thresholds are arbitrary** at the margin, so small data changes shift boundaries. It is **static**, taking no account of the causes of climate or of variability and extremes — two stations with identical means may have entirely different climates in practice. Its **B group** is defined by a formula that is empirically derived rather than physically grounded. It handles **highland climates** poorly, lumping enormous vertical diversity into one group. And the vegetation correspondence, while good, breaks down where vegetation has been altered by human activity.

**Thornthwaite's classification.**

*Basis:* the **water balance**, using **potential evapotranspiration** — the water that would be evaporated and transpired if it were available — computed from temperature and day length, and compared with precipitation to give a **moisture index**. A **thermal efficiency index** based on potential evapotranspiration classifies the temperature dimension.

*The decisive advantage:* it measures the **effectiveness** of precipitation rather than its amount. Five hundred millimetres in a cool maritime setting supports forest; the same amount in a hot interior supports steppe. Koppen's dry-climate formula gestures at this by varying the threshold with temperature; Thornthwaite makes it the classification's foundation. This is why the scheme is far more useful **agriculturally** — it identifies water surplus, deficit, recharge and utilisation through the year, which is precisely what crop planning requires.

*Structure:* moisture regions from perhumid through humid, moist subhumid, dry subhumid, semi-arid to arid, with subtypes for seasonal variation of the moisture index, and thermal types.

*Limitations:* **computational complexity**, which restricted its use before computing was routine. The **potential evapotranspiration formula is empirical**, derived from limited data and known to perform poorly in some settings, particularly arid and high-altitude ones — a physically based formulation would be preferable but requires data rarely available. The **boundaries do not correspond to vegetation** as closely as Koppen's, which was the criterion Koppen designed to. And the classification's terminology is unfamiliar and its categories are harder to communicate.

**Trewartha's modification** should be noted: it revises Koppen to correct the over-broad C group, separates a distinct subtropical category, and improves the treatment of highland climates — a practical improvement rather than a new principle.

**Comparative assessment.**

For **general description and communication**, Koppen — objective, simple, globally applied, and vegetation-corresponding.

For **agricultural and hydrological application**, Thornthwaite — because water balance rather than water amount determines what can be grown and when irrigation is needed.

For **India specifically**, the difference is instructive. Koppen classifies most of the country into a small number of categories that conceal enormous agricultural variation. Thornthwaite's moisture index distinguishes the humid east from the semi-arid Deccan interior in a way that corresponds to what farmers actually face, which is why Indian **agro-climatic zoning** draws on water-balance principles rather than on Koppen's thresholds.

**The general point:** a classification is a tool designed for a purpose, and the two are not competitors but instruments answering different questions. The valid criticism of either is that it is being used for a purpose it was not designed for.

Question 8

Explain the origin and significance of ocean currents.

Accepted Answer

**Origin: the forces and the constraints.**

**Wind** is the primary driver of surface currents. The planetary wind systems — trades and westerlies — exert stress on the ocean surface, and the resulting flow is transferred downward through friction. Since the wind systems are themselves the surface expression of the general circulation driven by the latitudinal energy imbalance, ocean currents are ultimately part of the same heat-transfer system.

**The Coriolis effect** deflects moving water to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern. Because the deflection acts on each successive layer, the **Ekman spiral** develops, with net transport in the upper layer at roughly ninety degrees to the wind direction. This is the mechanism behind coastal upwelling.

**Density differences**, arising from temperature and salinity, drive the deep **thermohaline circulation**. Cold, saline water is dense and sinks in high latitudes; it flows through the deep ocean and returns to the surface through gradual upwelling, on a timescale of centuries.

**Continental boundaries** constrain the flow, converting what would otherwise be zonal bands into closed **gyres**.

**The resulting pattern.** Subtropical gyres circulate **clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anticlockwise in the southern**. Because of the earth's rotation and the westward intensification that follows from it, **western boundary currents** are narrow, deep, fast and **warm**, flowing poleward; **eastern boundary currents** are broad, shallow, slow and **cold**, flowing equatorward. In the southern ocean, the absence of continental barriers permits the continuous **circumpolar current**, the largest by volume transport.

**Significance.**

**Climatic**, which is the largest. Currents carry a substantial share of total poleward heat transport. **Warm currents** raise coastal air temperatures and supply moisture, which is why high-latitude western European coasts are far milder and ports remain ice-free at latitudes where continental interiors are frozen. **Cold currents** lower coastal temperatures, and — critically — produce a **temperature inversion** as air cooled from below becomes stable, suppressing convection and rainfall. This is a principal reason for the **west-coast subtropical deserts**, where cold currents combine with subtropical subsidence to produce extreme aridity within sight of the ocean, and for the persistent **advection fog** those coasts experience.

**Biological**, through nutrient supply. Primary production in most of the ocean is nutrient-limited rather than light-limited, and nutrients accumulate at depth. **Upwelling** — where offshore Ekman transport draws cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface — therefore supports the world's most productive fisheries in a very small fraction of ocean area. Convergence zones where warm and cold currents meet are similarly productive, and also generate the dense **fog** that makes such regions hazardous for navigation.

**Navigational and historical**: currents and the associated winds determined sailing routes and the pattern of early maritime contact, and they still affect fuel consumption and routing.

**Dispersal**: currents distribute larvae, seeds and marine organisms, which is a substantial factor in marine biogeography, and they distribute pollutants, which is why plastic accumulates in the centres of subtropical gyres where circulation converges and retains it.

**Coastal geomorphology**: longshore currents transport sediment and build spits, bars and barrier features.

**The Indian Ocean exception**, worth stating because it is examinable. The northern Indian Ocean's circulation **reverses seasonally** with the monsoon — the only major ocean where this occurs — because the ocean is bounded to the north by a landmass whose seasonal heating and cooling drives the wind reversal. The southwest monsoon drives a clockwise circulation and the northeast monsoon an anticlockwise one, and the associated **Somali current** reverses direction entirely. The resulting seasonal upwelling off the Arabian coast is among the most productive in the world during the southwest monsoon.

**Contemporary significance.** The thermohaline circulation is a component of the climate system whose stability is a subject of active concern, since freshwater input from ice melt reduces surface density in the sinking regions and could weaken the overturning — with consequences for heat transport that would be geographically concentrated rather than uniform.

Explain the global distribution of volcanoes and account for differences in eruption style.

Accepted Answer

**The distribution follows plate boundaries**, and each setting produces a characteristic magma composition and therefore a characteristic eruption style. The two questions are one question.

**The four settings.**

**Divergent boundaries** — mid-ocean ridges and continental rift valleys. Decompression melting of rising mantle produces **basaltic** magma: low silica, low viscosity, low gas content. Most of this activity is submarine and constitutes the largest volume of volcanism on earth, though it is largely unobserved. Where a ridge emerges above sea level, or where continental rifting occurs, the surface expression is effusive.

**Convergent boundaries** — the circum-Pacific belt and the Mediterranean-Himalayan belt. The descending slab carries water into the mantle, which lowers the melting point of the overlying wedge and generates magma. This magma rises through and assimilates continental or arc crust, becoming enriched in silica and volatiles, producing **andesitic to rhyolitic** compositions: high silica, high viscosity, high gas content.

**Hotspots** — intraplate, attributed to mantle plumes. Magma is **basaltic**, and because the plate moves over a stationary source, a **chain of volcanoes** is produced with age increasing away from the active centre — which is itself strong evidence for both plate motion and the plume mechanism.

**Flood basalt provinces** — enormous outpourings of low-viscosity basalt over short geological intervals, associated with the initiation of plumes, producing extensive lava plateaus.

**Why composition determines style, which is the mechanism.**

**Viscosity** controls how easily magma flows and how easily gas escapes. Silica content controls viscosity: silica tetrahedra polymerise into chains, and more silica means more polymerisation and higher viscosity.

In **low-viscosity basaltic** magma, dissolved gas escapes continuously as the magma rises, pressure never builds, and eruption is **effusive** — lava flows travelling long distances, building **shield volcanoes** with gentle slopes or extensive **lava plateaus**. Hazard is chiefly to property in the flow path, and mortality is generally low because flows move slowly enough to permit evacuation.

In **high-viscosity andesitic and rhyolitic** magma, gas cannot escape and remains dissolved under pressure. As the magma rises and pressure falls, gas exsolves and expands explosively, fragmenting the magma. Eruption is **explosive**, producing ash columns, **pyroclastic flows** — the principal killer, being fast, hot and unsurvivable — and lahars where ash mixes with water.
