**Culture** is the learned, shared, symbolic body of knowledge, belief, values, norms and material products by which a group lives. **Tylor's** definition — that complex whole including knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired **as a member of society** — remains standard, and its final clause is decisive: culture is acquired through **membership**, not biologically.

**Learned**, through enculturation, which is why a child raised in another society acquires that society's culture regardless of ancestry.

**Shared**, being a property of a group rather than of an individual — an idiosyncratic practice is not culture.

**Symbolic**, resting on the capacity to assign **arbitrary** meaning, which is what distinguishes human culture from the learned behaviour of other species.

**Integrated**, so that change in one part produces change in others — which is why interventions targeting a single practice produce unanticipated consequences elsewhere.

**Adaptive**, though not every element is adaptive, since some persist by transmission alone.

**Cumulative**, since transmission permits building on what preceded.

**Dynamic**, changing continuously through invention, diffusion and acculturation.

Question 2

Distinguish the principles and types of descent. (150 words)

**Descent** is the socially recognised rule transmitting group membership, property and ritual obligation across generations.

**Unilineal descent** traces through one line only — **patrilineal** through males, **matrilineal** through females. Its analytical advantage is that it produces **unambiguous, non-overlapping** groups: every person belongs to exactly one, which permits **corporate** ownership, collective liability and group persistence beyond its members.

**Double descent** transmits **different rights through each line** — typically movable property through one and immovable through the other, so a person belongs to two groups for different purposes.

**Bilateral or cognatic** descent traces through **both** lines, producing the **kindred** — a group defined relative to an **individual** rather than to an ancestor. Kindreds therefore **overlap**, since no two people other than siblings share the same one, and cannot be corporate.

**Ambilineal** descent permits individuals to **affiliate through either** line, producing flexible groups whose membership is partly chosen.

**The functional point**: unilineal systems produce corporate groups capable of holding property and acting collectively; bilateral systems produce ego-centred networks that cannot. The choice is therefore consequential for political and economic organisation, not merely classificatory.

**Types by number of spouses.**

**Monogamy** — one spouse at a time, in **serial** form where remarriage follows dissolution and **strict** form where it does not.

**Polygyny** — one man with several wives simultaneously — is the **most widely permitted** form across societies, and the examinable qualification is that it is practised by a **minority within permitting societies**, because the sex ratio constrains it arithmetically: if most men married several wives, most men could not marry at all. It is therefore associated with wealth and status. **Sororal** polygyny, where co-wives are sisters, is common and reduces conflict, since the co-wives are already in a cooperative relationship.

**Polyandry** — one woman with several husbands — is **rare** and regionally concentrated. **Fraternal** polyandry among the **Todas** of the Nilgiris and the **Khasas** of the Himalaya has been associated with **land fragmentation avoidance**, since brothers sharing a wife keep the holding undivided, and with adverse sex ratios. Among the Todas, paternity was assigned by the **bow-and-arrow ceremony**, in which one husband performed a ritual establishing him as social father regardless of biological paternity — which is a direct demonstration that **pater and genitor** are distinct.

**Group marriage** is disputed as an attested institutional form.

**Laws of marriage.**

**Endogamy** requires marriage **within** a group — caste, tribe, religion, class. **Exogamy** requires marriage **outside** one — lineage, clan, gotra, village. The point most often missed is that the two operate **simultaneously at different levels**: Indian caste endogamy coexists with clan and village exogamy, so a person must marry within the caste and outside the clan.

**Hypergamy** is a woman marrying into a higher-status group; **hypogamy** into a lower. Hypergamy is associated with **dowry**, since the bride's family compensates for the status differential.

**The incest taboo** prohibits sexual relations within specified kin categories, and its puzzle is that it is **universal with variable content** — the prohibited categories differ enormously between societies. **Regulations.**

**Prescriptive** rules specify whom one **must** marry — prescriptive cross-cousin marriage in the southern Indian zone. **Preferential** rules specify a preferred category without requiring it. **Proscriptive** rules specify prohibited categories.

**Levirate** requires a widow to marry her deceased husband's brother; **sororate** requires a widower to marry his deceased wife's sister. Both **maintain the alliance** between the two groups after a death, which is the analytical point — the relationship established by the marriage is between groups, not merely between individuals, so it survives the individual's death.

**Marriage payments.**

**Bridewealth** transfers goods from the groom's group to the bride's, compensating for the loss of her labour and reproductive capacity and legitimating the transfer of **rights over her children** — which is why it is associated with **patrilineal** societies, where those rights are what the transfer secures.

**Dowry** transfers from the bride's group to the groom's or the couple, and is associated with **hypergamy**. The Indian observation is examinable: dowry has **expanded and monetised with prosperity and education** rather than declining, which defeats accounts predicting its erosion with modernisation.

**Bride service** substitutes labour for goods, the groom working for the bride's family for a period.

Examine anthropological approaches to the study of religion.

The approaches should be presented as **competing explanations of the same phenomenon**, differing in what they take religion to be.

**Intellectualist approaches: religion as explanation.**

**Tylor's animism** proposed that religion originates in the belief in **spiritual beings**. Reflecting on dreams, visions, shadows and death, early humans arrived at a concept of a **soul** separable from the body; this was extended to other humans, then to animals, plants and natural features, producing animism, and subsequently developed into polytheism and monotheism. Religion is thus a **rational attempt at explanation** on inadequate evidence.

**Marett's animatism** proposed a prior stage: belief in an impersonal supernatural **force** — mana — pervading persons, objects and places, without personified spirits. The force is a quality rather than a being.

**Frazer** proposed a developmental sequence from **magic** through religion to science, distinguishing **imitative** magic on the principle that like produces like, from **contagious** magic on the principle that things once in contact continue to influence one another. Magic he treated as false science; religion as an appeal to personal beings after magic failed.

**Critiques**: these are **speculative reconstructions** without evidence for the sequences proposed; they treat religion as **failed science**, which misdescribes what religious practice does; and they are ethnocentric, ranking religions on a scale ending at the theorist's own.

**Functionalist approaches: religion as doing something.**

**Malinowski** rejected Frazer's sequence and reframed the magic-religion relationship functionally. **Magic is used where outcomes are uncertain and uncontrollable**, and his evidence is the observation that Trobriand islanders performed elaborate magic for **open-sea** fishing, which is dangerous and unpredictable, and none for **lagoon** fishing, which is safe and reliable. Magic therefore manages **anxiety** where technique is insufficient, and it supplements rather than substitutes for technical knowledge — the islanders were expert navigators who also performed magic.

**Durkheim** treated religion as **society worshipping itself**. In *The Elementary Forms*, the distinction between **sacred and profane** is the elementary religious fact; the **totem** is simultaneously the emblem of the clan and the object of worship, which for Durkheim is not coincidence but the explanation; and **ritual** functions to generate and periodically renew **collective sentiments** and thereby solidarity. Religion's object is social, not supernatural.

**Radcliffe-Brown** developed the structural-functional version, holding that ritual expresses and reinforces the sentiments on which social structure depends.

**Critiques**: functionalism explains religion's **persistence** better than its **content** — why these beliefs rather than others — and cannot readily account for religious change or for religion that divides a society rather than uniting it.

**The rationality approach: Evans-Pritchard on the Azande.**

This is the single most instructive case and should be given at length. Among the Azande, misfortune is attributed to **witchcraft**. Evans-Pritchard's decisive observation is that witchcraft does not compete with technical explanation: when a granary collapses and injures someone sitting beneath it, the Azande know perfectly well that termites weakened the supports — that explains **how** it fell. Witchcraft explains **why it fell at that moment, on that person** — which technical causation cannot answer and which is the question people actually ask about misfortune.

The system is **internally coherent**: accusations are tested by **oracles**, oracles are checked against one another, apparent failures are explained within the system by secondary elaborations. It is **rational given its premises**, and its premises are not testable from within.

The study's significance is that it **reoriented the anthropology of religion** away from asking whether beliefs are true and toward asking what questions they answer and how the system sustains itself.

**Structuralist and symbolic approaches.**

**Levi-Strauss** analysed **myth** structurally, as a device mediating **binary oppositions** — life and death, nature and culture — that the society cannot resolve in practice. The meaning lies not in any single version but in the **structure common to all versions**.

**Turner** and **Geertz** treat religion as a **system of symbols** whose meanings must be interpreted rather than explained causally. Geertz's definition — a system of symbols establishing powerful, pervasive and long-lasting moods and motivations by formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and clothing them with such an aura of factuality that the moods seem uniquely realistic — is the standard citation.

**Turner's** analysis of ritual symbols as **multivocal**, condensing several meanings, and his development of **liminality** and **communitas** from **Van Gennep's** rites of passage, are the practical contributions.

**Assessment.** The approaches answer different questions and are not straightforwardly rivals. **Intellectualist** approaches ask why religious beliefs arise; **functionalist** approaches ask what religion does for a society; **Evans-Pritchard's** approach asks what questions the system answers for its holders; and **symbolic** approaches ask what religion means to participants. The strongest position is that religion is **over-determined** — it explains, it integrates, it manages anxiety and it means — and that a single-function account of any of these forms is inadequate to the phenomenon.

Question 5

Examine political organisation in stateless societies with reference to the segmentary lineage system.

Accepted Answer

**The question stateless societies pose**: how is order maintained without centralised authority, a monopoly of force, courts or police? The answer is the most important finding in political anthropology.

**The typology first.** **Service's** classification arranges political organisation by scale and centralisation: **band**, small, kin-based, egalitarian, characteristic of foragers, with no formal leadership and disputes resolved by mediation or by **fission** — the group splits; **tribe**, larger, segmentary, with kinship or age-based integrating institutions and leadership that is influential rather than coercive; **chiefdom**, with centralised but not fully coercive authority, ranked rather than stratified, operating through **redistribution**; and **state**, with centralised coercive authority, a monopoly of legitimate force, formal institutions, stratification and territorial rather than kin-based membership.

The first two are **acephalous** — literally headless — and are what the question concerns.

**The segmentary lineage system**, from **Evans-Pritchard's** Nuer study.

The Nuer had no chief with coercive authority, no court, no police, no formal government. They nonetheless maintained order across a large population and territory, and the mechanism is **structural rather than institutional**.

**The structure.** Lineages **nest** within larger lineages: minimal lineages combine into minor, minor into major, major into maximal, and maximal into the tribe. Each level is a segment of the level above.

**The mechanism is balanced opposition.** In any dispute, a man supports his **closer** kin against more distant kin. Two brothers in dispute are opposed as individuals; but if one is in dispute with a cousin, the brothers unite. If a member of their minor lineage is in dispute with another minor lineage, the whole minor lineage unites. And so upward.

**The consequence** is that the relevant political unit **expands and contracts with the level of the conflict**. Groups that oppose one another at one level combine at the next. The formulation is: myself against my brother; my brother and I against our cousin; we and our cousin against the stranger.

**Why this maintains order.** No segment can dominate, because opposition to it automatically generates a coalition of equivalent size — the opposition is **balanced** by the structure itself. There is no permanent alignment and therefore no permanent hierarchy. And because every person is simultaneously a member of segments at every level, everyone has an interest in the system's continuation.

**The feud** operates within this. Where a killing occurs, the victim's lineage is obliged to retaliate against the killer's, and the obligation extends to all members. This appears to produce endless violence and does not, because of a countervailing institution: the **leopard-skin chief**, a ritual figure with no coercive power who provides sanctuary to a killer and mediates the payment of compensation in cattle. His authority rests entirely on ritual status and on both parties' interest in ending the feud, and his lack of power is what makes him acceptable as a mediator — an authority with force would be a party rather than a mediator.

**Other mechanisms of order in stateless societies.** **Age-set** systems, in which men initiated together form a permanent group cross-cutting lineage divisions, which is significant because it creates loyalties that **cut across** descent and therefore restrain lineage conflict. **Informal sanctions** — gossip, ridicule, ostracism, witchcraft accusation and supernatural sanction — which are highly effective in small face-to-face societies where reputation is inescapable and where a person cannot move to another community. And **fission** as the ultimate resort, since a group that cannot resolve a dispute can simply divide.

**Law in stateless societies**, which is the associated question. If law requires a centralised enforcing authority, stateless societies have none. If law is defined by the presence of **rules whose breach entails a recognised and socially legitimate response**, they plainly do — compensation, ordeal, oath, mediation and self-help under agreed limits are systematic mechanisms. **Malinowski's** analysis of Trobriand **reciprocity** as the basis of obligation makes the point differently: obligations are enforced not by authority but by the certainty that a defaulter will be excluded from future exchange.

**The distinction between restitutive and punitive** settlement is worth stating: where the parties must continue to live together, settlement aims at **restoring relations** through compensation; where they need not, it aims at **penalising**. This explains why compensation dominates in small-scale societies and punishment in states.

**Assessment.** The finding that complex order exists without centralised authority was among anthropology's most consequential contributions, because it refuted the assumption — built into political theory since Hobbes — that the alternative to the state is disorder. Segmentary systems are not the absence of politics but a different form of it, and their limitation is scale: balanced opposition works where the segments are comparable and the population is not too large, which is why such systems do not persist under conditions producing permanent inequality between segments.

Question 6

Examine the formalist-substantivist debate and its resolution.

Accepted Answer

**The question at issue**: whether the concepts of formal economics — scarcity, rational choice, maximisation, market price — are **universal** and therefore applicable to all societies, or are **specific** to market economies and therefore misdescribe others.

**The formalist position.** Economic behaviour is **universal** because scarcity is universal: everywhere people face limited means and alternative ends, and everywhere they choose among them. Economics is therefore not the study of a particular kind of institution but of **choice under scarcity**, and its analytical apparatus applies to a Trobriand islander allocating labour between garden and canoe exactly as to a factory manager. Individuals **maximise** — utility, prestige, security, or whatever they value — and the apparent oddity of non-market economies dissolves once the relevant maximand is identified.

**The substantivist position**, associated with **Polanyi**. The word economic has **two meanings** that formalists conflate: the **formal** meaning derived from the logic of rational choice under scarcity, and the **substantive** meaning of the **provisioning** of material wants — the interchange between people and their environment that supplies the means of life.

Only the substantive meaning is universal. The formal meaning presupposes a **market system** in which prices allocate resources, and that system is historically exceptional. In most societies the economy is **embedded** in social relations — kinship, ritual, political obligation — rather than constituting a separate sphere governed by its own logic, so analysing it with market-derived categories imposes an alien framework.

**Polanyi's three forms of integration** are the position's most useful product and should be given as the substantive analysis.

**Reciprocity**: movement between **symmetrically placed** parties, governed by obligation and social relationship rather than by price. Requires a symmetrical social structure — moieties, lineages, trading partnerships.

**Redistribution**: movement toward a **centre** and out again, governed by a central authority. Requires a degree of centralisation, and is characteristic of chiefdoms and of many states.

**Market exchange**: movement governed by **price** formed in a market. Requires a price-making market system.

Most societies combine all three with **one dominant**, and the dominant form indicates the economy's organisation.

**Sahlins's refinement** of reciprocity is the standard development. **Generalised** reciprocity: the return is unspecified in time, quantity and quality, and the giver does not calculate — characteristic of close kin, and the failure to reciprocate does not immediately end the relationship. **Balanced** reciprocity: an equivalent return is expected within a defined period, and failure to reciprocate ends the relationship. **Negative** reciprocity: each party attempts to gain at the other's expense — haggling, barter with strangers, theft.

**The finding**: the type of reciprocity correlates with **social distance**. Generalised within the household, balanced within the community, negative between strangers. This is a genuine empirical regularity and it supports the substantivist claim that exchange is governed by social relationship rather than by price.

**The ethnographic evidence.**

The **kula** ring, described by **Malinowski**: necklaces circulate in one direction and armshells in the other around a ring of islands, exchanged between lifelong partners. The objects are **not useful**, are not consumed, and must be passed on. The exchange sustains relationships, obligations and **prestige** across a wide area, and it provides the framework within which ordinary trade in useful goods occurs alongside it. A formalist reading struggles to identify what is being maximised; a substantivist reading identifies the exchange as constitutive of the social relations that make trade possible at all.

The **potlatch** of the Northwest Coast: a competitive feast in which wealth is distributed and sometimes destroyed, and status is established by **giving away** rather than by accumulating. Again the formalist response is that prestige is being maximised — which is available but has the appearance of being constructed after the fact to preserve the framework.

**Mauss's** analysis of the gift identified the threefold obligation to **give, receive and reciprocate**, and argued that in such societies the gift is a **total social fact** — simultaneously economic, legal, religious and political — which is precisely the embeddedness the substantivists asserted.

**The resolution.**

The debate was not won and was **superseded**, and the honest assessment says so.

The formalist position is **unfalsifiable in its general form**: any behaviour can be redescribed as maximising something, so the claim that people maximise carries no information unless the maximand is specified independently. Its usable content is narrower — that people respond to relative costs and opportunities, which is well supported.

The substantivist position correctly identified that **market categories misdescribe** non-market economies and produced the most useful analytical apparatus in the field. Its weakness is that the embedded-disembedded distinction is too sharp: market economies are also socially embedded, as economic sociology has demonstrated, and non-market economies also involve calculation.

**What succeeded them** is a **Marxist** and political-economy approach concerned with production, surplus extraction and the incorporation of local economies into wider systems; and a **practice** approach examining how individuals act strategically within culturally given constraints — which accommodates both calculation and embeddedness without treating them as alternatives.

The debate's lasting contribution is **Polanyi's three forms** and **Sahlins's** reciprocity types, which remain the field's working vocabulary regardless of the theoretical position adopted.

Question 7

Examine functionalism and structuralism in anthropology.

Accepted Answer

The two are the discipline's most influential twentieth-century frameworks, and they differ at the most basic level: on **what an explanation of a cultural item consists of**.

**Functionalism: Malinowski.**

*The reaction it represents*: against evolutionist and diffusionist speculation about origins, which Malinowski regarded as unverifiable. The question is not where an institution came from but **what it does now**.

*The theory*: every cultural item exists because it satisfies a **need**. Malinowski specified **basic biological needs** — nutrition, reproduction, bodily comfort, safety, movement, growth, health — which generate **derived needs** requiring cultural responses: economic systems, social control, education, political organisation. **Integrative needs** — for religion, art, magic — follow from these.

*The method and its lasting contribution*: **participant observation**, established through the Trobriand fieldwork. Prolonged residence, competence in the language, and the ambition to grasp the native's point of view. This became the discipline's defining method and outlived the theory that produced it.

*Its demonstrations*: the **kula** analysed as sustaining relationships across a wide area; **magic** analysed as anxiety management where technique is insufficient — the open-sea against lagoon fishing observation; and Trobriand kinship used to argue against the universality of the Oedipal pattern, since the figure of authority is the mother's brother rather than the father.

*Its defects*. It **cannot explain change**, since everything present is functional and there is no source of instability. It is **teleological**, explaining an institution by its consequences without a mechanism connecting the consequence to the institution's persistence. Reducing culture to needs cannot explain the **variety of forms** satisfying the same need. And the individual focus makes it difficult to explain arrangements that serve the group at individual cost.

**Structural functionalism: Radcliffe-Brown.**

*The shift*: from the **individual's** needs to the **social structure's** requirements. Society is a system of relationships whose parts contribute to its maintenance, on an analogy with an organism, and the function of an institution is its contribution to the **persistence of the structure**.

*Its demonstrations*: the Andaman Islanders study; the analysis of the **joking relationship** as managing structural tension between categories of kin who must cooperate and are potentially in conflict; and Evans-Pritchard's Nuer work as its most successful application.

*Its defects*: the same conservatism, inability to handle conflict and change, and the circularity that structure is inferred from what exists and then used to explain it.

**Structuralism: Levi-Strauss.**

*The reaction it represents*: against functionalism's concern with observable function. The question is not what an institution does but **what generates its form** — and the answer lies in structures that are **not observable** and must be inferred.

*The theory*: cultural phenomena are surface manifestations of **underlying structures** in the human mind, which are universal. The mind operates through **binary oppositions** — nature and culture, raw and cooked, life and death — and cultural forms are transformations of these. Drawing on structural linguistics, meaning lies not in elements themselves but in the **relations between them**.

*Its demonstrations*. In **kinship**, the elementary structures: the incest taboo compels exchange, marriage is the exchange of women between groups, and the distinction between **restricted** and **generalised exchange** explains the different integrative consequences of bilateral and matrilateral cross-cousin marriage. In **myth**, the analysis of variants to identify the common structure, with myth understood as a device mediating oppositions the society cannot resolve in practice. In **totemism**, the argument that totemic species are chosen not because they are good to eat but because they are **good to think** — they supply a system of differences by which social differences can be represented.

*Its defects*. It is **difficult to falsify**, since the analyst identifies which oppositions are operative. It **neglects history, agency and power**, treating cultures as timeless systems. It explains form without explaining why a **particular** society has the form it does. And the claim about universal mental structures is asserted rather than demonstrated.

**The comparison, stated precisely.**

On **what is explained**: functionalism explains an institution's **persistence** by what it does; structuralism explains its **form** by what generates it.

On **the level of analysis**: functionalism works with observable behaviour and institutions; structuralism with unobservable underlying structures.

On **the individual**: functionalism begins from needs, individual or social; structuralism regards the individual as irrelevant, since the structures operate below consciousness.

On **method**: functionalism is empirical and fieldwork-based; structuralism is analytical and comparative across recorded material, and Levi-Strauss's own fieldwork was limited.

On **change**: neither handles it well, but for different reasons — functionalism because everything is functional, structuralism because structures are treated as timeless.

**Assessment.** Functionalism's lasting contribution is **method** — participant observation, which every subsequent approach uses — and the insistence that institutions be understood in their contemporary context. Structuralism's lasting contribution is the demonstration that cultural phenomena have **systematic properties** that can be analysed formally, and the specific analyses of kinship exchange and myth.

Both were superseded for the same reason: neither could accommodate **history, power and change**, which is what the Marxist, practice and postmodern approaches that followed were addressing. That both failed on the same dimension, from opposite starting points, suggests the omission was in the shared assumption that societies are systems to be analysed synchronically rather than processes to be analysed historically.

Examine kinship terminology and its relationship to social structure.

Accepted Answer

**The problem terminology poses.** Kin terms do not map onto biological relationships. Many societies apply a single term to relatives that others distinguish, and distinguish relatives that others group. **Morgan** recognised that this is not confusion but **systematic**, and that terminological systems are limited in number and correlate with other features of social organisation.

**Morgan's basic distinction.** **Descriptive** systems use separate terms for each distinct relative, or compound terms describing the path — mother's brother's son. **Classificatory** systems apply a **single term** to several relatives who are biologically distinct, most characteristically merging lineal and collateral relatives so that father and father's brother share a term.

**Why classification is not confusion.** Relatives grouped under one term stand in the **same structural relation** to ego — the same rights, obligations and expected behaviour apply. If father and father's brother both belong to ego's patrilineage, both exercise authority, and both may be inherited from, then a single term expresses a genuine social equivalence that a descriptive term would obscure. **Terminology encodes social structure, not biology**, and that proposition is the topic's core.

**The principal systems**, distinguished by the pattern of **cousin** terminology, which is the diagnostic feature because cousins are where descent rules produce the sharpest differences.

**Hawaiian** — the simplest: all relatives of the same generation and sex share a term, so all cousins are called by the sibling term. Correlates with **ambilineal or bilateral** descent and with weak unilineal grouping, since no distinction between lines is required.

This appears bizarre until the principle is grasped: the line through which descent is traced is differentiated carefully by generation because inheritance and succession depend on it, while the other line is treated as a single undifferentiated category because relationships to it are of one kind regardless of generation.

**Sudanese** — fully descriptive, with separate terms for each relative. Correlates with complex societies having considerable social differentiation.

**The correlations, stated as the answer's finding.**

**Terminology correlates with descent rule**: Iroquois with unilineal descent generally, Crow with matrilineal, Omaha with patrilineal, Eskimo and Hawaiian with bilateral.

**Terminology correlates with marriage rule**: systems distinguishing cross from parallel cousins occur where cross cousins are marriageable, since the terminology must mark the distinction the rule requires.

**Terminology correlates with the significance of the corporate group**: where descent groups are strongly corporate, terminology emphasises the line of descent; where they are not, it emphasises the nuclear family or generation.

**The analytical principles** underlying these, which is what a strong answer supplies. Kin terms group relatives by **structural equivalence** — same rights, obligations and behaviour. **Merging** occurs where relatives are equivalent; **differentiation** where they are not. And the criteria used — generation, sex, lineality, relative age, sex of linking relative, affinity — are selected by the social structure rather than given by biology.

There is thus no residential or economic unit containing a woman and her sexual partner, and the functions Murdock listed were distributed across the matrilineal descent group rather than concentrated in a nuclear unit.

**The Israeli kibbutz** attacks **residence with children** and **economic cooperation**. **Its methodological value**, which is the case for it.

It is a **precondition of accurate description**. An observer who classifies a practice as irrational before understanding its context will not discover what the practice does. **Malinowski's** analysis of the **kula** is the standard illustration: an exchange of useless objects that must be passed on appears pointless until the relationships, obligations and prestige it sustains are understood — and the understanding was available only to an observer who suspended the judgment.

**Evans-Pritchard's** Azande study makes the point more sharply. Witchcraft beliefs appear straightforwardly false to an outside observer. **Informal mechanisms and why they work.**

**Gossip and ridicule** are the most pervasive. In a small face-to-face community, reputation is **inescapable** — everyone knows everyone, information circulates rapidly, and there is no anonymity in which misconduct can be concealed. Ridicule is a serious sanction where a person's standing determines their access to cooperation, marriage partners and support.

**Ostracism** — withdrawal of cooperation, exclusion from exchange, refusal of participation in collective activity — is severe in a society where survival depends on cooperation and where there is nowhere else to go.

**Witchcraft accusation** functions as social control in two directions. Fear of being **accused** deters conduct attracting envy or hostility, particularly conspicuous accumulation or refusal of obligation. And fear of being **bewitched** deters giving offence. Evans-Pritchard's Azande material shows accusations clustering in relationships of tension, which is the mechanism.

**Supernatural sanction** — belief that breach brings illness, misfortune or ancestral displeasure — enforces rules without any human agency, which is why oaths and ordeals are effective where they are believed.

**The oath and the ordeal** are formalised applications: an oath invokes supernatural sanction on a false statement, and an ordeal submits a disputed question to a supernatural test. Both function because they are believed, and both provide a **decision procedure** where evidence is unavailable.

**Fission** is the ultimate resort: a group that cannot resolve a dispute divides, and the parties separate. This is available where land is abundant and mobility is possible, and it is precisely what a state prevents.

**Why these lose effectiveness with scale.** Every mechanism above depends on **reputation and inescapability**. Increasing population size, anonymity, mobility and social differentiation weaken all of them — a person can move, can be unknown, can find alternative cooperators — which is part of the explanation for the emergence of formal law with growing scale.

**Law in stateless societies**, which is the associated debate.

If **law requires a centralised enforcing authority** — the position associated with a jurisprudential tradition treating law as the command of a sovereign — then stateless societies have none.

If law is defined by the presence of **rules whose breach entails a recognised and socially legitimate response**, then they plainly do. **Hoebel's** working criteria — that a norm is legal when its neglect or infraction is regularly met by the application of physical force by an individual or group possessing the socially recognised privilege of doing so — permit the identification of law in societies without courts.

The principle of **infrastructural determinism** holds that causation runs upward, so changes in the material base produce changes above it.

*The methodological commitment.* Explanation must be in terms of **material** conditions, and the discipline should proceed as a science seeking causal explanations testable against evidence. Harris distinguished **emic** accounts, in the participants' own categories, from **etic** accounts, in the analyst's scientific categories — and held that explanation requires the etic, since participants' accounts of why they do things are frequently not the reason.

*Its demonstrations*, which are its most cited feature. Harris argued that apparently irrational practices have **material** explanations. The sacred cow: cattle in Indian agriculture supply draught power, dung for fuel and fertiliser, and milk, so slaughtering them during a famine would destroy the means of the following season's production — the prohibition is therefore ecologically adaptive, whatever its religious form. Pig avoidance: pigs compete with humans for food and water in arid environments and cannot be herded over distance, so the prohibition is adaptive.

*Its critiques.* The explanations are **post hoc** and difficult to falsify — a material advantage can be found for almost any practice with sufficient ingenuity. It **neglects meaning**: even if the cow prohibition is adaptive, that does not explain the specific form the belief takes or what it means to those holding it. **Interpretive anthropology: Geertz.**

*The theory.* Culture is not a material adaptation but a **system of symbols** — a set of publicly available meanings through which people interpret their experience and orient their conduct. Its method is **thick description**: distinguishing a twitch from a wink from a parody of a wink requires not more precise observation of the eyelid but knowledge of the **framework of meaning** within which the movement is a signal. The physical description is identical; the significance is entirely different.

*Its demonstrations*: the analysis of the Balinese cockfight as a **text** in which Balinese men read their own social relations — status rivalry, kinship alignment and the hierarchies of village life — enacted in a form that is deep play precisely because nothing material is finally at stake.

*Its critiques.* It offers **no criterion for choosing between interpretations** — if the analyst's reading is one interpretation among possible ones, what makes it better than another? It **neglects power**: the meanings analysed are treated as shared, when they are frequently contested and their dominance reflects who is able to make their interpretation prevail. It treats culture as too **coherent**, as a text with a single reading. And it makes cumulative knowledge difficult, since interpretations do not build on one another as findings do.

**The opposition, stated precisely.**

On **what culture is**: an adaptive system determined by material conditions, against a system of meanings.

On **what an explanation is**: identification of a material cause, against interpretation of a meaning.

On **the discipline's status**: a natural science seeking causal laws, against a humanistic discipline seeking understanding.

On **whose account counts**: Harris's etic, in the analyst's scientific categories, against Geertz's emphasis on the participants' own framework of meaning.

On **method**: comparison and hypothesis testing against thick description of the particular.

**Assessment.** The opposition is genuine and neither position is adequate alone.

Materialism is right that **material conditions constrain** and that ecological and economic factors explain a great deal that participants' accounts do not — and its refusal to accept a practice's stated rationale as its explanation is a real methodological gain.

Interpretivism is right that **meaning is not reducible** to function and that a practice's significance for its participants is part of what requires explanation, not a distraction from it.

The most defensible position treats them as answering **different questions** — why a practice persists, and what it means — and notes that the answers are compatible. The Indian cattle prohibition can be simultaneously ecologically adaptive and religiously meaningful, and the two accounts are not competitors unless one insists that a single explanation must be complete.

What both omit is **power**, which is why the approaches that followed — practice theory, political ecology, and the postmodern turn — made the question of whose meanings prevail and whose interests are served central.
