Question 1

Rewrite this to meet the ethnographic evidence standard: 'In some societies descent is traced through the mother rather than the father. In such matrilineal societies, women have higher status and property passes through the female line. However, authority is often still held by men.'

Accepted Answer

The original states a general proposition with no case, and its final sentence gestures at the crucial qualification without establishing it. An examiner cannot tell whether the candidate knows any matrilineal society.

**Rewrite.** 'Matrilineal descent is documented in several well-studied societies, and the ethnography establishes a distinction the general statement conceals — that **descent is not authority**.

Among the **Nayars of Kerala**, descent, residence and property passed through the female line in the **tharavad**, a matrilineal joint household. But authority within it was exercised by the **karanavan**, the eldest male of the senior female line — the woman's brother rather than her husband. Visiting sambandham partners had no rights over the household or over the children.

Among the **Khasi** of Meghalaya, property passes to the **youngest daughter**, the khadduh, who is custodian rather than absolute owner and is obliged to maintain the ancestral house and the elderly. Authority again rests substantially with the **mother's brother**, who manages lineage affairs.

Among the **Trobriand Islanders** described by Malinowski, a boy belongs to his mother's lineage, inherits from his **mother's brother** rather than his father, and the mother's brother exercises jural authority — while the father, having no lineage claim on the child, occupies an indulgent and affectionate role. Malinowski used precisely this arrangement to argue against the universality of the Oedipal pattern, since the figure of authority and the figure of the mother's husband are different men.

The general finding is therefore that **matriliny concerns descent, inheritance and group membership**, while **jural authority typically rests with the mother's brother** — so matriliny is not matriarchy, and confusing the two is the standard error.'

What changed: three named societies with their specific arrangements, the technical terms they use, and the cases deployed to establish a general proposition rather than to illustrate one.

Question 2

Explain the standard kinship notation and demonstrate it on cross-cousin marriage.

Accepted Answer

**The notation.** A **triangle** denotes a male, a **circle** a female, and a **square** a person of unspecified sex. A **shaded** symbol denotes a deceased person. An **equals sign** or a horizontal line linking two symbols denotes marriage; a diagonal stroke through it denotes divorce or dissolution. A **vertical line** descending from a marriage denotes descent to children. A **horizontal line** joining symbols at the same level denotes siblings. **Ego** — the reference person from whom relationships are traced — is conventionally marked with a distinguishing symbol or label.

**Demonstrating cross-cousin marriage.**

The distinction the diagram makes visible is between **parallel** cousins — the children of two brothers or of two sisters, that is, of same-sex siblings — and **cross** cousins — the children of a brother and a sister, that is, of opposite-sex siblings.

Draw a sibling pair at the top: a brother and a sister joined by a horizontal line. Each marries, shown by an equals sign to a spouse. Each has a child, shown by a vertical line descending. Those two children are **cross cousins** to one another, because their parents were opposite-sex siblings.

**Why the distinction matters, which is what the diagram is for.** In many unilineal systems, parallel cousins fall within **ego's own descent group** and are therefore classified as siblings and covered by the incest prohibition, while cross cousins fall in a **different descent group** and are therefore marriageable — in some societies preferentially so.

**Two forms** are then distinguishable on the diagram. **Matrilateral** cross-cousin marriage is with the mother's brother's daughter; **patrilateral** is with the father's sister's daughter. **Levi-Strauss** argued that the matrilateral form produces **generalised exchange** — group A gives women to B, B to C, C to A, creating an indefinitely extended cycle — while the patrilateral form produces **restricted exchange** between paired groups only. The alliance consequences differ substantially, and the diagram is what makes the difference visible.

**In Indian ethnography**, cross-cousin marriage is characteristic of the southern kinship zone, where it keeps affinal relations within an existing kin network — with the consequence that a married woman retains proximity to and support from her natal kin, which is associated with the regional differences in women's autonomy documented in Indian demography.

Question 3

Demonstrate the biological anthropology register on the skeletal changes associated with erect posture.

Accepted Answer

Biological anthropology is scored on **mechanism and exact terminology**, and the erect posture question is the standard test of both — because every change must be explained by the biomechanical requirement it satisfies.

**The skull.** The **foramen magnum**, the opening through which the spinal cord passes, is positioned **posteriorly** in quadrupeds, where the skull is slung forward from a horizontal spine, and **centrally beneath the skull** in humans, where the head must balance on a vertical column. The consequence is that human neck musculature can be reduced, and the **nuchal crest** for its attachment is correspondingly reduced or absent. The **face** is orthognathous rather than prognathous, and the **cranial capacity** increase is a later development rather than a correlate of posture — the sequence being that bipedalism preceded brain expansion, which the fossil record establishes.

**The vertebral column.** Quadrupeds have a single arch; the human column has a **double S curve** with cervical and lumbar lordosis and thoracic and sacral kyphosis. The mechanism is that the curves place the body's centre of gravity over the pelvis and act as a **spring** absorbing the shock of each heel strike, which a straight column could not.

**The pelvis** is the most diagnostic element. The ape ilium is **long and flat**, oriented dorsally; the human ilium is **short, broad and curved laterally**, which repositions the gluteal muscles so that they abduct rather than extend — enabling them to stabilise the trunk over the supporting leg during the single-support phase of each stride. Without this, walking would produce lateral collapse at each step. The human pelvis is also **broader and shallower**, which produces the **obstetric constraint**: a birth canal shaped by bipedal requirements combined with a large neonatal skull makes human birth difficult and explains the relatively **altricial** neonate and the extended dependency period, with its consequences for social organisation.

**The lower limb.** The **valgus angle** — the inward angling of the femur from hip to knee — brings the knees and feet under the body's midline, so the centre of gravity need not shift laterally with each step. The **femur is lengthened** relative to the arm, and the **carrying angle** is a direct correlate of bipedal efficiency.

**The foot** is the most transformed. The ape foot has an **opposable hallux** for grasping; the human hallux is **adducted and aligned** with the other toes, sacrificing grasping for propulsion. **Longitudinal and transverse arches** develop, functioning as shock absorbers and as levers for push-off. The **calcaneus** is enlarged to bear weight at heel strike.

**The upper limb**, freed from locomotion, is shortened relative to the leg, and the hand is released for **manipulation** — with the precision grip and the associated changes in the thumb being the developments that made tool manufacture possible.

**The consequences** to state in the assessment: energetic efficiency in long-distance walking; freeing of the hands for carrying and tool use; a raised visual field; reduced solar exposure of the body surface in open habitat; and, on the cost side, the obstetric constraint, susceptibility to lower back disorder, varicose veins and hernia — the price of an arrangement adapted from a quadrupedal design rather than built for the purpose.

Question 4

Present anthropological theory as a sequence of reactions rather than a chronology.

Accepted Answer

Each school arose from a defect in its predecessor, and presenting that logic rather than the dates is what the question is asking for.

**Classical evolutionism** — Tylor, Morgan, Frazer — held that all societies pass through the same stages of development in a fixed sequence, and that contemporary simple societies represent earlier stages of the observer's own. Its method was **comparative**, using accounts collected by travellers and missionaries rather than fieldwork, and it produced the discipline's first general framework. **Its defects**: the unilinear sequence was assumed rather than demonstrated; the ranking was **ethnocentric**, placing the theorist's own society at the endpoint; and the method — the **comparative method** as then practised — assembled traits from different societies without context, which is why it was later called armchair anthropology.

**Diffusionism** reacted against the assumption that similar traits arise independently through parallel evolution. It held instead that traits **spread** from centres of origin, so cultural similarity indicates contact rather than a common stage. The German-Austrian *Kulturkreise* school and the British heliocentric school represent its extremes. **Its defect**: it explained transmission and not **origin**, and in its extreme forms attributed almost all invention to a single centre, which the evidence does not support.

**Historical particularism** — Boas — reacted against both. Each culture is the product of its own **particular history**, so generalisation is premature until adequate ethnographic data exists. Its method was **intensive fieldwork**, and it produced the discipline's commitment to **cultural relativism** and its rejection of racial explanations of cultural difference. **Its defect**: an inductivism so cautious that it produced description without theory, which the next generation found unsatisfying.

**Functionalism** — Malinowski — reacted against historical speculation by asking what an institution **does now**. Every cultural item satisfies a biological or derived need, and the Trobriand fieldwork established participant observation as the discipline's method. **Its defects**: it cannot explain change, since everything is functional; it is teleological, explaining an institution by its consequences; and reducing culture to needs cannot explain the variety of forms that satisfy the same need.

**Structural functionalism** — Radcliffe-Brown — shifted the referent from the individual's needs to the **social structure's** requirements, treating society as a system whose parts contribute to its maintenance. **Its defects** are those of functionalism generally — conservatism, inability to handle conflict and change — plus the objection that structure is inferred from what exists and then used to explain it.

**Structuralism** — Levi-Strauss — reacted against functionalism's concern with observable function by seeking the **underlying mental structures** that generate observable forms. Culture is organised by **binary oppositions** processed by universal properties of the human mind, and his analyses of kinship as exchange and of myth as the transformation of oppositions are its demonstrations. **Its defects**: it is difficult to falsify, since the analyst identifies the oppositions; it neglects history, agency and power; and it explains form without explaining why a particular society has the form it does.

**Cultural materialism** — Harris — reacted against structuralism's idealism, holding that **infrastructure** — the technology and ecology of production and reproduction — determines structure and superstructure, and that apparently irrational practices have material explanations.

**Interpretive anthropology** — Geertz — reacted against the search for causes and laws, holding that culture is a system of **meanings** and that the anthropologist's task is **thick description** and interpretation rather than explanation. **Its defect**: it offers no criterion for choosing between interpretations.

**Postmodern and reflexive** approaches reacted against the authority of the ethnographic text itself, questioning the anthropologist's ability to represent another culture and drawing attention to the **power relations** in which fieldwork occurs.

**The pattern to state in conclusion**: the sequence oscillates between **generalising** ambition — evolutionism, functionalism, structuralism, cultural materialism — and **particularising** caution — historical particularism, interpretive and postmodern approaches. Each swing corrects a real defect and creates a new one, which is why the discipline is now methodologically plural rather than converged.

Question 5

State the connected analysis that answers most of Paper II's tribal questions, and show it applied to three different questions.

**The connected analysis**, in sequence.

**Step one: the geographical coincidence.** Tribal populations concentrate in hilly forested districts on the peninsular shield, in the northeast, and in western and southern hill regions — terrain unsuited to intensive plough agriculture, which is why it escaped clearance and dense agrarian settlement. That same terrain holds the country's **mineral wealth**, because the Archaean and Proterozoic rocks of the shield host it. The **mineral belt, the forest belt and the tribal belt therefore substantially coincide**.

**Step two: the colonial reclassification.** The colonial state redefined forest as **state property and revenue asset**, extinguishing customary rights of access and use, converting forest-dwellers into **encroachers** on land they had occupied, and creating a forest establishment to enforce it. It also opened these areas to traders, moneylenders and contractors.

**Step three: land alienation.** Despite protective legislation prohibiting transfer to non-tribals, alienation proceeded through **debt-based** transfer, **benami** transactions and long leases — the enforcement mechanism being weakest where administration was least accessible.

**Step four: displacement.** Mining, dams and industry displaced tribal populations disproportionately, because of the step-one coincidence. Rehabilitation **under-counted** systematically, because displacement was defined around **land title**, excluding the landless, the forest-dependent whose access was to common resources, and downstream populations. Since the excluded are the poorest, the compensation regime is regressive by construction. And displacement destroys a **livelihood system** — common property access, social networks, location-specific knowledge — not merely a dwelling.

**Step five: the grievance structure**, which underlies tribal movements and the concentration of extremism in the same districts.

**Applied to three questions.**

**On tribal problems**: run the whole sequence, with emphasis on alienation, indebtedness and forest access, and add health, education and the specific vulnerability of particularly vulnerable groups.

**On development projects and their impact**: emphasise steps one and four — why tribal populations are over-represented among the displaced, why the under-counting mechanism is definitional rather than administrative, and why cash compensation replaces none of a destroyed livelihood system. Add the anthropological contribution: knowledge of what the intervention disrupts, which project appraisal conducted without it cannot supply.

**On tribal movements**: emphasise step five, and classify the movements by their grievance — land and forest rights movements, movements against displacement, movements for autonomy and separate statehood, and reformist or revivalist movements — with the observation that the classification tracks which step of the sequence produced the grievance.

**The advantage of holding it this way**: each question requires different emphasis on a single analysis rather than separate preparation, which is exactly what a compact optional's revision economics require.

Question 6

Build a comparative table on the major fossil hominids and state what the sequence establishes.

**Axes: approximate period and region | cranial capacity trend | locomotion | associated culture | diagnostic feature.**

**Australopithecines** — Plio-Pleistocene, South and East Africa. Cranial capacity in the range of modern apes rather than of later hominids. **Bipedal**, established by pelvic and lower limb morphology and by preserved footprint trails. Gracile and robust forms distinguished, the robust having heavy masticatory apparatus with sagittal crest and large molars indicating a coarse diet. Associated with the earliest stone tools in the later part of the range. **Diagnostic**: bipedalism with an ape-sized brain, which establishes that **locomotion preceded encephalisation** — the single most important thing the sequence shows.

**Homo erectus** — Early to Middle Pleistocene, first African and subsequently the first hominid found across Asia and Europe. Cranial capacity substantially increased over Australopithecines, with thick cranial bones, prominent **supraorbital torus**, receding forehead, and no chin. Fully bipedal with essentially modern postcranial skeleton. Associated with the **Acheulian** handaxe tradition, with the controlled use of **fire**, and with the first hominid dispersal out of Africa. Regional forms — Javanese, Chinese and European — are conventionally distinguished. **Diagnostic**: the combination of modern body proportions with an archaic skull, and the first wide geographical range.

**Neanderthals** — Late Pleistocene, Europe and western Asia. Cranial capacity equal to or exceeding modern humans, with a long low cranium, occipital bun, large midfacial projection, and heavy brow ridges. Robust postcranial skeleton with cold-adapted body proportions — short distal limb segments, barrel chest — consistent with a glacial environment. Associated with the **Mousterian** tradition, with **deliberate burial** and with evidence of care for injured individuals. The classical and progressive types are conventionally distinguished. **Diagnostic**: a large-brained, cold-adapted form whose relationship to modern humans has been the subject of extended debate.

**Anatomically modern Homo sapiens** — Late Pleistocene onward. High rounded cranium, vertical forehead, reduced brow ridges, projecting **chin**, gracile postcranial skeleton. Associated with **Upper Palaeolithic** blade industries, composite tools, bone and antler working, and representational art. The named European finds are conventionally distinguished. **Diagnostic**: the chin and the vertical forehead, and the appearance of unambiguous symbolic behaviour.

**The verdict beneath the table, which is what converts it from data into argument.**

**Bipedalism preceded brain expansion** by a very long interval, which refutes the once-standard assumption that a large brain came first and drove the rest — an assumption that shaped early interpretation and was falsified by the Australopithecine evidence.

**Cranial capacity increased progressively but not uniformly**, and it is not a simple linear series: forms overlapped in time and space, so the sequence is a **branching bush rather than a ladder** — which is why phylogenetic charts should be drawn with uncertainty rather than as a single line.

**Cultural complexity tracks the sequence** but with the tool traditions persisting across long periods and across taxonomic boundaries, so the correspondence is loose.

**Dispersal occurred more than once**, with Homo erectus the first to leave Africa and modern humans dispersing later — which is the basis of the debate between replacement and regional continuity models of modern human origins.

Question 7

You have prepared Paper I thoroughly and Paper II superficially, with six weeks left. Plan them.

Accepted Answer

**The diagnosis first.** This is the standard Anthropology profile and it caps scores, for a specific reason: Paper II is **half the optional** and its tribal material is examined most heavily and most predictably. A candidate strong in Paper I and weak in Paper II is strong in the half where the theory is abstract and unfamiliar, and weak in the half where the material is concrete and finite — which is the wrong way round for a compact optional whose advantage is complete coverage.

**Weeks one and two — the tribal block, which is roughly half of Paper II.** Build the **connected analysis** first: the geographical coincidence of mineral, forest and tribal belts; the colonial forest reclassification; land alienation mechanisms; displacement and the under-counting mechanism; and the resulting grievance structure. That is one page and it answers questions on problems, development impact, movements and policy with different emphasis.

Then the **specific units** built onto it: tribal situation and distribution; the **integration-isolation-assimilation debate** with Elwin, Ghurye and the Nehruvian panchsheet and each position's critique; the constitutional and administrative provisions for scheduled areas; social change among tribes; and tribal movements classified by grievance.

**Week three — Indian social structure and the caste material.** Varnashram, purushartha, karma and rebirth as the traditional framework; caste's features, theories of origin and contemporary change; the sacred complex and the nature-man-spirit complex, which are examined and frequently under-prepared; and the impact of the major religious traditions.

**Week four — the remaining Paper II units.** Evolution of Indian culture and civilisation with the palaeo-anthropological evidence; the demographic profile; the Indian village; linguistic and religious minorities; and the emergence and growth of anthropology in India, which is a reliably examined short-answer topic.

**Week five — the applied units and integration.** The role of anthropology in tribal and rural development, and anthropology's contribution to understanding regionalism, communalism and ethnic and political movements. These are the syllabus's own statement of the discipline's purpose and are examined as such. Simultaneously, take every Paper II topic and attach the **Paper I concept** that analyses it — descent theory to Indian kinship, the theory of social change to tribal transformation, ecological anthropology to the forest-dependence questions. That mapping is what makes Paper II analytical rather than descriptive, and it also converts Paper I strength into Paper II marks.

**Week six — writing and revision.** Two full papers under timed conditions. Drill the compulsory five-part format, which decides 100 marks and is rarely practised. And build the **revision artefact** for both papers if it does not exist — because the whole argument for this optional is complete revisability, and a candidate who cannot traverse the syllabus in a fortnight has forfeited the advantage that justified choosing it.

**What not to do with these six weeks**: further reading in biological anthropology or theory, which is already adequate and has low marginal return. The hours are needed in the half that is weak, and it is also the half where the material is more predictable.

Question 8

Write a 10-mark compulsory-part answer, at about 150 words, on 'Cultural Relativism'.

Accepted Answer

'**Cultural relativism** is the methodological principle that a culture's beliefs and practices must be understood **in terms of that culture's own standards and context**, rather than judged against the standards of the observer's culture. It is associated with **Franz Boas** and the historical particularist tradition, and it arose in direct opposition to the **evolutionist** ranking of societies on a single scale with the observer's own at the summit.

Its **methodological value** is that it is a precondition of accurate description: an observer who classifies a practice as irrational before understanding its context will not discover the function it performs. Malinowski's account of the **kula** ring illustrates this — an exchange of non-utilitarian valuables that appears pointless until the relationships, obligations and prestige it sustains are understood.

It is opposed to **ethnocentrism**, the evaluation of other cultures by one's own standards, of which the evolutionist ranking was a systematic form.

**The critique** is important. Pressed from a methodological principle into a **moral** doctrine, relativism implies that no practice can be criticised from outside — which forecloses judgment on practices causing demonstrable harm and, applied consistently, would prevent internal critics from appealing to any standard beyond their own tradition. The defensible position separates **epistemological** relativism, which is a requirement of good method, from **moral** relativism, which is a distinct and contestable claim.'

About 210 words, at the upper end for a 10-mark part. The structure — definition, attribution, methodological value with an ethnographic illustration, the opposed term, and the critique with the distinction that resolves it — fits any concept part in this paper.
