History of Telangana: Ancient to Modern — Practice

Question 1

What was the Kakatiya dynasty's capital, and in present-day terms where is it?

Accepted Answer

Orugallu, present-day Warangal.

Question 2

Who founded the Qutb Shahi dynasty, and in what year?

Accepted Answer

Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk, in 1518, at Golconda.

Question 3

Who was Rudrama Devi, and why is her reign specifically significant?

Accepted Answer

The daughter of Ganapatideva, Rudrama Devi ruled the Kakatiya kingdom as one of the few female monarchs in medieval Indian history, defending it against the Yadavas and other external pressures. Her reign was specifically noted by contemporaries and later chroniclers, including the Venetian traveller Marco Polo, making her one of medieval India's better externally documented female rulers.

Question 4

How did Kakatiya rule end, and what followed?

Accepted Answer

Warangal fell to Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq's Delhi Sultanate forces in 1323, ending Prataparudra II's reign and Kakatiya rule. Telangana then came under successive Delhi Sultanate governorship before the independent Bahmani Sultanate, established in 1347, absorbed the region.

Question 5

Explain why TGPSC examines Telangana's ancient and medieval dynastic history in Paper II while devoting an entire separate paper to the twentieth-century statehood movement, rather than combining both into one continuous historical paper.

Accepted Answer

These two bodies of content serve genuinely different analytical purposes despite both being history. Paper II's dynastic history establishes Telangana as a region with its own continuous political and cultural identity stretching back two millennia, essentially the factual case for the region's own distinct historical personality. Paper VI's twentieth-century statehood movement is the specific political argument, built on grievances around administrative safeguards and their breakdown from 1948 onward, that this distinct identity deserved its own state; examining this movement in its own dedicated paper, at full depth (900 marks across six sub-sections), gives TGPSC's syllabus designers room to test the movement's own specific instruments, agreements, committees and legislation in genuine detail, a depth that would be lost if this content were compressed into a single combined history paper alongside two millennia of dynastic material.

Question 6

Who founded the city of Hyderabad, in what year, and around what monument?

Accepted Answer

Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth Qutb Shahi sultan, founded Hyderabad in 1591 as a planned new capital beyond Golconda's fort, centred on the Charminar.

Question 7

Who founded the Asaf Jahi dynasty, and in what circumstances?

Accepted Answer

Asaf Jah I, a Mughal governor of the Deccan, established effective independence in 1724 following the Mughal Empire's own decline in the early 18th century, founding the dynasty (the Nizams of Hyderabad) that would rule Telangana as Hyderabad State until 1948.

Question 8

Who conquered Golconda, ending Qutb Shahi rule, and in what year?

Accepted Answer

Aurangzeb, in 1687, after a prolonged Mughal siege.
