Geography of Telangana — Practice

Question 1

What broad terrain type does Telangana occupy, and how does this differ from coastal Andhra Pradesh?

Accepted Answer

The Deccan plateau, a broadly undulating peninsular tableland, distinct from Andhra Pradesh's deltaic, coastal plains.

Question 2

At the confluence of which two rivers does the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project sit?

Accepted Answer

The Godavari and the Pranahita, in present-day Bhupalpally district.

Question 3

Name four major Godavari tributaries within Telangana.

Accepted Answer

The Manjira, the Maner, the Pranahita (itself formed by the Wainganga, Wardha and Penganga confluence), and the Indravati.

Question 4

Explain why Telangana's plateau terrain historically made the region dependent on tank irrigation rather than gravity-fed canals.

Accepted Answer

Unlike a flat, alluvial delta where river water can be distributed through gravity-fed canals across a wide flat plain, Telangana's plateau terrain, with its undulating surface and generally higher elevation relative to major river channels, made large-scale canal irrigation far less feasible. Agriculture instead depended heavily on rain-fed cultivation and small, locally constructed tanks (cheruvus) capturing seasonal monsoon runoff, an irrigation pattern established as far back as the Kakatiya period and directly explaining why Mission Kakatiya's post-2014 restoration effort specifically targeted this traditional tank infrastructure rather than building new canal systems.

Question 5

Explain what Mission Kakatiya specifically targets, when it was launched, and how it connects to the regional irrigation-investment disparity this paper's Movement content describes.

Accepted Answer

Mission Kakatiya, launched by the Telangana government in 2015, specifically targets the restoration of traditional irrigation tanks, aiming to rehabilitate over 46,000 tanks across the state that had fallen into disrepair, silted up, or become breached over decades of comparatively lower minor-irrigation investment. This connects directly to the regional disparity this paper's own Movement content documents for the 1956-2014 period, when irrigation investment was perceived as concentrated on the Krishna-Godavari delta systems serving coastal Andhra's already fertile, canal-irrigated agriculture, while Telangana's own traditional tank systems received comparatively less new investment; Mission Kakatiya is, in effect, the post-statehood policy response specifically addressing this long-documented historical grievance, explicitly named after the Kakatiya dynasty whose era originally built much of this now-restored tank infrastructure.

Question 6

What is the Singareni Collieries Company Limited, where are its reserves located, and how is it owned?

Accepted Answer

A coal mining company operating in the Godavari Valley Coalfield along the Pranahita-Godavari valley across several Telangana districts, jointly owned by the Telangana state government and the Government of India on a 51:49 equity basis.

Question 7

Name a Krishna tributary that flows directly through Hyderabad, and name a major dam on the Krishna straddling Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Accepted Answer

The Musi flows directly through Hyderabad; the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, one of the world's largest masonry dam structures, straddles the Telangana-Andhra Pradesh border.

Question 8

Name two Scheduled Tribe communities significantly present in Telangana's forested northern and eastern districts.

Accepted Answer

The Gond and the Koya (the Lambada/Banjara community is also significantly present, though distributed more broadly).
