Question 1

Convert 3 m to centimetres and 2 L to millilitres.

Accepted Answer

3 m = 3 x 100 = 300 cm. 2 L = 2 x 1000 = 2000 mL. Both go from a bigger unit to a smaller one, so both multiply.

Question 2

Convert 4000 g to kilograms.

Accepted Answer

4000 divided by 1000 = 4 kg. This goes from a smaller unit to a bigger one, so it divides.

Question 3

Which unit would you use to measure a pencil, a classroom, and the distance to the next town?

Accepted Answer

Centimetres for the pencil, metres for the classroom and kilometres for the distance. The unit should suit the size of the thing being measured.

Question 4

Write 1.5 m in metres and centimetres, and explain why it is not 1 m 5 cm.

Accepted Answer

1.5 m is 1 m 50 cm. The 0.5 means half a metre, and half of 100 cm is 50 cm, not 5 cm.

Question 5

A jug holds 2 L. How many 250 mL glasses can be filled from it?

Accepted Answer

2 L is 2000 mL, and 2000 divided by 250 = 8 glasses.

Question 6

A parcel weighs 1 kg 250 g. Write this weight in grams.

Accepted Answer

1 kg is 1000 g, so the total is 1000 + 250 = 1250 g.

Question 7

Convert 5 km to metres and 500 cm to metres.

Accepted Answer

5 km = 5 x 1000 = 5000 m. 500 cm = 500 divided by 100 = 5 m.

Question 8

Ravi walks 750 m to school and 750 m back. How far does he walk in all, given in kilometres?

Accepted Answer

750 + 750 = 1500 m. Since 1000 m make a kilometre, that is 1.5 km, or 1 km 500 m.

Question 9

Rani buys 2 kg of rice and 500 g of dal. Find the total weight, and explain why you cannot simply add 2 and 500.

Accepted Answer

Convert to one unit first: 2 kg = 2000 g, so the total is 2000 + 500 = 2500 g, which is 2 kg 500 g. Adding 2 and 500 straight away would be adding kilograms to grams, which measures nothing at all. Quantities can only be added once they share a unit.

Question 10

A classmate measures a book by lining its edge against the very end of the plastic ruler rather than the 0 mark. Will the reading be too long or too short, and why?

Accepted Answer

Too long. Most rulers have a small blank margin before the 0 mark, so starting at the edge adds that margin to every measurement. Always line the object up with the 0 mark itself.
