Geography of Madhya Pradesh: Physiography, Drainage, Forests & Resources — Practice

Question 1

Name the five states that border Madhya Pradesh.

Accepted Answer

Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.

Question 2

Where does the Narmada rise, and how long is it?

Accepted Answer

It rises at Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh and flows about 1,312 km, of which roughly 1,077 km lie in MP, before falling into the Arabian Sea at the Gulf of Khambhat.

Question 3

Which Madhya Pradesh district is associated with diamond mining, and what is special about it?

Accepted Answer

Panna, where the Majhgawan mine makes Madhya Pradesh the only diamond-producing state in India.

Question 4

Describe the physiographic divisions of Madhya Pradesh.

Accepted Answer

The state has five broad zones. The Malwa plateau in the west has Deccan lava and black soil. The Vindhyan region, covering Bundelkhand in the north and Baghelkhand in the east, has sandstone plateaus. The Narmada valley in the centre is a fertile rift trough. The Satpura and Maikal ranges in the south and south-east include Pachmarhi, with Dhupgarh the highest point, and Amarkantak. The Gird and Chambal region in the north-west has alluvial plains and ravines.

Question 5

Classify the rivers of Madhya Pradesh by drainage system and name one major project on each.

Accepted Answer

The Ganga system includes the Chambal, Betwa, Ken and Sone; projects include Gandhi Sagar on the Chambal and Bansagar on the Sone. The west-flowing rivers are the Narmada and Tapti; projects include Indira Sagar, Omkareshwar and Bargi on the Narmada. The Godavari system takes the Wainganga in the south-east. This classification reflects the state's central position on the plateau.

Question 6

Explain the distribution of soils and rainfall in Madhya Pradesh.

Accepted Answer

Black soil covers Malwa, Nimar and the Narmada valley, formed from Deccan basalt. Red and yellow soils lie in Baghelkhand and the eastern hills. Alluvial soil occupies the Gird-Chambal plains, and shallow mixed soils (mar, kabar, parua) mark Bundelkhand. Rainfall falls from east to west: heaviest in Mandla, Balaghat and Baghelkhand, moderate in Malwa, and lightest in the north-west and parts of Bundelkhand, which explains Bundelkhand's water scarcity.

Question 7

Why is Madhya Pradesh called the Tiger State? Name its tiger reserves.

Accepted Answer

The 2022 estimate put MP's tigers at 785, the highest for any state. It has nine reserves: Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura, Panna, Sanjay-Dubri, Ratapani, Veerangana Durgavati and Madhav. Panna is noted for a reintroduction success after local extinction in 2008-09, Kanha for the hard-ground barasingha and Bandhavgarh for high tiger density.

Question 8

Discuss the mineral and energy resources of Madhya Pradesh and the challenges in exploiting them sustainably. (~200 words)

Accepted Answer

MP is India's only diamond producer (Panna), a leading source of copper (Malanjkhand, Balaghat) and manganese (Balaghat, Chhindwara), and a major coal state (Singrauli, Sohagpur, Chhindwara). The Katni-Satna-Maihar belt supports a large cement industry on limestone. Power comes from thermal plants at Singrauli, Sarni, Birsinghpur and Anuppur, hydropower at Indira Sagar, Omkareshwar and Bargi, and solar at Rewa (750 MW) and Omkareshwar. Challenges include displacement and forest loss in mining and dam areas, coal-based air pollution around Singrauli, reservoir siltation, and the need to balance mining with tiger corridors and tribal rights under the Forest Rights Act and PESA. Sustainable exploitation needs stricter environmental clearance, compensatory afforestation, rehabilitation and a faster shift to renewables.

Question 9

"Bundelkhand is rich in heritage but poor in water." Explain the geographical reasons for water scarcity in the region. (~200 words)

Accepted Answer

Bundelkhand lies on the Vindhyan plateau, whose hard granite and gneiss bedrock stores little groundwater. Its soils are shallow and mixed (mar, kabar, parua), and its rivers such as the Betwa and Ken are rain-fed and seasonal, with steep gradients that speed run-off. Rainfall is lower and more erratic than in eastern MP, and the region has faced repeated drought spells. Because storage is limited, irrigation reaches only part of the area. The response has been link and storage projects such as the Ken-Betwa link, watershed development and traditional tanks, but progress needs to balance water transfer with the ecological cost, notably to Panna Tiger Reserve.
